Steven Fletcher's stunning strike gave Sheffield Wednesday their first Championship victory in 2019 as the Owls defeated Wigan.

Fletcher beat Latics goalkeeper Jamie Jones with a powerful strike from 20 yards out just after the hour.

Barry Bannan's curling free-kick sailed narrowly wide of the post 15 minutes from time as the hosts threatened to add to their lead.

Wigan offered very little after conceding and the home side held on for their first win in five league games.

Wednesday, still waiting for new boss Steve Bruce to take charge next month, started the better and nearly opened the scoring in peculiar circumstances after six minutes as Wigan goalkeeper Jones made a last-ditch save with his feet to deny Marco Matias a direct goal from a corner.

Jones was then called into action 20 minutes later, diving low to his right to save a powerful Fletcher effort.

Wigan responded late in the first half through Josh Windass, who saw his deflected effort sail wide of the far post, and from the resulting corner, Anthony Pilkington flicked the ball onto Joe Garner who prodded the ball narrowly past the post.

Wigan have now lost 11 away games in the Championship this season, the worst record in the division, and they dropped to 20th in the table, with Wednesday remaining 16th.

Sheffield Wednesday caretaker manager Steve Agnew told BBC Radio Sheffield:

"I'm really pleased with the result, [it was] three points that we needed and on the balance of play we deserved to win by more than one goal.

"I said at half-time that I thought we were the better team without having had too much of a threat on goal, but then we upped our game a touch.

"We pressed high, we worked them. I can't remember too many times that Keiren [Westwood] had much to do."

Wigan Athletic boss Paul Cook:

"At half-time I was thinking there was something there for us, but in the second half Sheffield Wednesday totally dominated the game and fully deserved the victory.

"We got ourselves into a position to possibly get something from the game but, unfortunately, we fell away in the second half and Sheffield Wednesday were full value for the win.

"We never got a foothold in the game or got into positions to hurt them and that is great credit to them."
