In my essay I am going to bring up three different topics. How jazz music makes West Side Story be evocative of the decade in which it was written, how gang related music would change West Side Story and Romeo and Juliet, and further how different Romeo and Juliet would be if they would of sang rather than spoke their soliloquy. Each of these topics has gang related actions and how music defines the gangs.
In West Side Story both Acts 1 and 2 are mostly instrumental, allowing suspense to form in each scene. In the 1950’s, gangs are growing more and more. With West Side Story being in New York, there were the Jets and the Sharks.Jazz music help bring out the actions in each of the two gangs and helps bring out each of the characters and shows who they really are. In ‘Tonight,’ the characters are reflecting on their hopes and dreams. Bernstein crafted the music to mirror the visions of each character. Jazz music helps build suspense in many scenes in West Side Story, for instance, in “The Gangs Fight in the Street,” the music starts to become allegro and the snaps of their fingers build the suspense even more. The jazz helps show the differences in each gang and how their actions are like that of the sounds of jazz orchestra. West Side Story also has classical andpop music played throughout it, and at certain instances all three can be heard together. At the very end of the musical, the music become piano; and the hurt and anger from Maria is radiated from the music choice.
My essay is on a friend of our family, Lenny Wilkens. Lenny grew up in Bedford-Stuyvesant neighborhood of Brooklyn. His father was African American and his mom was Irish American. Lenny was raised Catholic. In high school Wilkens
My working thesis is currently as follows: The movie, The Watsons Go to Birmingham, portrays how society treated African Americans during the 1960s. Kenny Watson, the lead character, shows the viewers how he sees the world through his eyes as a child while facing with racism and violence in Birmingham, Alabama during the summer of 1963.
Romeo is a stereotypical boy who would listen to sappy mainstream music such as the following songs.
The music in this film doesn’t go with the setting and time period that the film and novel take place in. The music is very upbeat and poppy, something you might hear on the radio today. It really does not go with the whole 1920’s
The music becomes slow which a very simple beat and there are very few instruments in the minor key, as the music is so quiet you get the strong, deep feeling of passion. Communication In west side story the two main characters, Maria and Tony, meet across a crowded room at a school disco.
Topic Sentence: While music was an impact on the Civil Rights Movement, Motown Records is what gave Blacks the confidence to succeed in the only voice they had.
Another example is when Arbogaust gets killed and when Norman is taking his mother downstairs, we watch over this scene from the top corner, as the birds do in Norman's office this implies that Norman is haunted by something watching over him. These examples foreshadow the ending of the film and the real situation between Norman and Mother. The music builds a lot of tension and suspense in psycho, it tells us that something is going to happen very soon and we get prepared for it, the lack of music can make a scene seem calm and normal, which then contrasts with the loud scary music that starts quickly as the scary part happens. The audience are unprepared and scared.
What exactly is jazz? As defined by Merriam Webster Dictionary jazz is “American music developed especially from ragtime and blues and characterized by propulsive syncopated rhythms, polyphonic ensemble playing, varying degrees of improvisation, and often deliberate distortions of pitch and timbre”. While this definition is true and a “cookie cutter” definition of jazz it is not completely accurate Jazz is one large genre with many sub-genres within it such as swing, bebop, free jazz, hard bop, and cool jazz. Yes jazz was derived from ragtime and blues but what is not commonly known is that Baroque music had a hand in the development of this art form. In this paper I show the correlation between Baroque music and cool jazz and how their
The topic I have chosen for my research paper is the impact Louisa May Alcott, a writer from the 1800’s, had on the people in America. Louisa May Alcott was a writer that wrote a few famous books, including Little Women, An Old Fashioned Girl, and Under the Lilacs. Especially in Little Women, a recurring theme in the book is equality between girls and boys and women's struggle between pursuing their dreams and working for their families. Louisa May Alcott’s views on these topics really shined through to all the young readers and inspired them. I want to learn more about these ideas and write about them. They are interesting to me, and I have also read the book Little Women so I can understand the ideas from the book.
The key ideas my essay will cover will consist of a few of Jerkins problems he encountered. First, wanting to explore new ideas, processes, sounds, etc. and being only called or asked for what you have already done that people hear on the charts. Jerkins talked about having and developing the ability to take something that is old and turn it into something brand new. Which is so useful in life whether it be in our homes, on our jobs or in relationships the concept is a very valuable one which is essential to success, especially in this new fast paced evolving world we all now live in. Second, being excepted as an R&B producer while being born into a Christian family, including a father who was a Pastor and mother who was a choir director. Jerkins
The same applies to a dramatic scene where the music may be deep and frantic to convey to the audience the feeling of anticipation. A scene i would like to focus on is the scene in which Garry and his father have a final ‘showdown’, if you will, at the front of the house. The scene consists of the father imposing himself on Garry and proceeding to continually beat him down time after time only for Garry to rise up and face his father on each occasion. This scene evoked a feeling of pride and admiration from the audience as to Garry’s courage and determination to convey the message to his father that he is ready to stand on his own two feet and defy him. This is a very powerful scene within the movie which initiated powerful emotions within the audience. All of this was accomplished with the notable absence of music of any form. The omission of music in this scene created an atmosphere in which the dramatic affect was amplified due to the silence.
In contrary to common thought, classical and rap music have as many similarities as they do differences. The sound may be completely different, but there is a way to show emotion that will affect the listeners. For example, they both have ways to bring emotion and feeling into both performance and their audience’s effectiveness. Classical has an effect on the listeners that makes them cry, laugh and be happy. Rap music has an effect on a person that makes them get up and dance to the beat of the song. Classical and rap music are different in many ways but are
Tony and Maria - more romantic love, idealised, though Tony has to agree with Riff,
The music helped in elaborating this great film. As I mentioned in class different instruments helped create different moods for different scenes in the movie. We heard the cello and the violin to create sadness and remorse. The flute created eeriness and the trumpet created awareness. I thought these were instruments and tools that help make this film extraordinary.
It is an underrated way to make you feel a certain way in the scene. We can hear a dark, opera type singing at the part when he is beat. When one hears this type of music being played in certain scenes, it shows a person’s dark side and gives the impression that one is ultimately the bad guy in the movie. Demonstrating violence is one of the most important factors in the film. An important part of the film that shows this, is when Elliott Ness is trying to catch the bookkeeper at the train station. It then turns into a shootout scene between the Mob and Ness. In this scene, at the beginning, slow motion was used to help convey the violence that was happening. When things are in slow motion, it helps to bring about the detail and gore that is unfolding before our eyes. After this, the shooting unfolds, and the slow-motion stops. Next, it was filmed with a wide screen which was effective for showing intricate movements, like this shoot out scene. Throughout this part, quick cuts were used to conveys that things are out of control and this brings out the intensity of the violence. All these techniques help show the violence that played out because of prohibition.
