Bankrate's take
For drivers who have or want a roadside assistance membership with AAA, an auto or life insurance policy from one of AAA’s insurance underwriters could offer savings and convenience.
New
In July 2023, AAA joined the flock ofinsurers limiting coverage in Florida. The insurer announced it wouldnot renew auto, home and umbrella policies for some customers throughout the Sunshine State, citing devastating hurricanes and high reinsurance rates. AAA still writes new insurance policies in Florida, but it has pivoted its efforts to lower-risk areas.
AAA, also known as the American Automobile Association, isn’t acar insurance company. Instead, it’s a nationwide network of motor clubs that offers roadside assistance plans by membership as well as auto insurance through third-party underwriters. Each geographic region in the United States has its own AAA club, and insurance partners may vary based on your exact location — which makes it difficult to offer universal information about AAA’s auto insurance offerings. Overall, AAA earned a 3.4 Bankrate Score for auto insurance, reflecting its customers’ mixed experiences.
Regardless of your geographic location, you can expect a few constants from AAA insurance. All AAA clubs offer the same standard coverage options, includingbodily injury andproperty damage liability that meet state requirements. Add-ons like gap insurance and rental car reimbursement are also typically available for AAA policies. If you also pay for a AAA membership — which may be a prerequisite for coverage in some areas — you’ll also get access to member benefits for travel, home maintenance and other services.
While some customers report great experiences with AAA, there may also be drawbacks. In addition tocomparing rates between AAA and other companies, consider these potential benefits and disadvantages of a AAA car insurance policy:
The average cost of a full coverage car insurance policy from AAA across all regional clubs is $2,316 per year, according to April 2025 data from Quadrant Information Services. That’s 14 percent less than thenational average cost of car insurance— but keep in mind that rates may vary significantly based on your geographic location and the insurer underwriting your coverage. For example, the average annual cost of full coverage from CSAA Insurance Group, which is based in California and underwrites AAA policies in 24 other states, is $3,126.
In addition to your regional club’s insurance partner, your driving record, age, credit score and other keyrating factors will also impact the amount you pay for insurance through AAA. Young drivers, drivers with violations on their record and anyone with poor credit may pay above-average rates for AAA auto insurance.

AAA insurers may use age as a proxy for driving experience when calculating insurance risk in most states. In general, teen drivers can expect to pay the highest rates for AAA auto insurance because they carry a greater risk of accidents, violations and claims. Keeping a teenager on a parent’s policy can help to reduce the cost of coverage for this high-risk group.

While your individual profile is the biggest determinant of your auto insurance rates, every car insurance company prices risk differently. On average, AAA’s premiums are close to the national average cost of car insurance — which means that some major carriers may be cheaper or more expensive. It’s important tocompare personalized quotes from multiple companies when shopping for car insurance, especially if you’re seeking thecheapest company for your profile.

Our first source for understanding AAA’s customer satisfaction comes from third-party ratings. Two key metrics that Bankrate’s insurance editorial team used wereJ.D. Power’s 2023 U.S. Auto Insurance Study, which breaks down customer satisfaction for various auto insurers by geographic region, and complaint index scores from the National Association of Insurance Commissioners (NAIC), which offer a quick snapshot of an insurance carrier’s rate of official customer complaints. AAA’s scores from both J.D. Power and the NAIC are mixed, with some regional carriers performing better than others.
In the 2023 J.D. Power U.S. Auto Insurance Study, AAA companies are rated in seven out of 11 regions, and the scores vary by region and company. Auto Club of Southern California, for example, holds the top rank in Texas and the third spot in California — but the Automobile Club Group received the lowest customer satisfaction score of any carrier in the North Central region.
In addition, three AAA insurers were ranked in the2023 U.S. Auto Claims Satisfaction Study. Only Auto Club of Southern California scored above the industry average with 889 out of 1,000 points; both CSAA and Automobile Club Group ranked below average with 874 and 848 points, respectively.
Because AAA policies are underwritten and serviced by different carriers, NAIC records show mixed complaint scores. The Automobile Club of Southern California, one of AAA’s largest insurers, has an NAIC complaint index score of 1.03 for 2023. Because that’s slightly higher than the industry baseline of 1.00, the score indicates that Auto Club of Southern California received slightly more complaints than average for an insurance carrier of its size. By comparison, CSAA Insurance Group received a complaint index score of 0.85 in 2023 — below the average complaint rate.
Taking advantage of discounts can be an advantageous way tolower your car insurance premium. Keep in mind that AAA is made up of individual regional clubs; the discounts in your specific region may be different from discounts offered elsewhere. Some AAA car insurance discounts include:

The AAA Life Insurance Company, based in Michigan and operating in all states except New York, offers threetypes of life insurance policy: term life, whole life and universal life. Term life policies are available in 10, 15, 20 or 30-year terms, and AAA advertises pricing as low as $8 per month for these policies. If you’re not sure what type of life insurance you need, AAA offers extensiveeducational resources on its website.
For AAA members or anyone who already has other insurance products through AAA, it may be worth gettinglife insurance quotes from AAA. However, a high rate of customer complaints recorded by the NAIC indicates that AAA Life’s customer satisfaction may be lower than otherlife insurance companies.
During our AAA life insurance review, we identified some areas where the company excels and some areas where it falls short of its competitors. Keep in mind as you’re shopping for coverage thatthe cost of life insurance is highly personalized based on your age, health considerations and the type of policy you choose. AAA could be thecheapest life insurance company for some customers, while others will find better rates elsewhere.
The only insurance rider AAA lists for its life insurance policies is aReturn of Premium Rider for certain term life policies. Only available on AAA’straditional term life product, this rider will return 100 percent of premiums at the end of your policy term if the coverage was not used.

When you’re looking for the best insurance company for your needs, getting quotes from several providers can be helpful. No single company is the best option for everyone. If you’re interested in AAA insurance but not quite sure it’s the right fit, consider these similar companies:

AAA auto or life insurance could be a good option for card-carrying AAA members, with member benefits like simplified DMV transactions and notary services. However, variations between regional member insurers mean mixed customer experiences. Read More | If you want a company with a national presence (rather than one that is broken down into regional clubs), you could consider Allstate. The insurer is one of the most well-known in the country and offers a variety of insurance products, with plenty of endorsements and discounts to build the coverage you need. AAA offers more unique perks for members, though, with discounts on attractions and entertainment, travel help and financial products. Read More | If you like the regional feeling of AAA, you could consider Farm Bureau, which operates as a different company in each state where it sells coverage. This means each state’s version of Farm Bureau could be slightly different, tailoring its coverage to the needs of drivers and homeowners in that state. Just like AAA, you do have to have a Farm Bureau membership to access its insurance, though. If you would rather not buy a membership, you may want to look elsewhere for insurance. Read More |

Depending on your regional club’s insurance provider, AAA could be a good source for your auto insurance. Customers served by Automobile Club of Southern California and CSAA Insurance Group, for instance, tend to report better experiences than drivers in the states served by the Michigan-based Automobile Club Group. If you’re considering an auto policy from AAA, you may want to explore member experiences in your area and compare quotes from other insurers before making a decision.
Because AAA’s auto clubs and insurers are so scattered, we turned to forums and review sites to understand how AAA customers rated their insurance. We looked at AAA insurance reviews on Reddit in both regional forums and insurance-focused subreddits, along with TrustPilot reviews. Some AAA customers spoke highly of their claims experience and low rates, while others reported rate increases and difficulty getting in contact with customer service.
We found Reddit users discussing AAA insurance in personal finance forums as well as local subreddits for California residents. California drivers frequently reported good experiences with AAA, although some mentioned rate increases and higher premiums than other carriers.
As a review site, TrustPilot typically gets a higher number of negative reviews for most insurance companies — including AAA. However, we found both positive and negative perspectives among TrustPilot users who had insurance through AAA.
All rates, features and offers shown in the media on this review were accurate at the time they were procured, but may have changed since recording. Because AAA insurance is managed by regional chapters, your contact information may vary depending on your region.
AAA provides auto insurance in all 50 states and Washington, DC and life insurance in all states except New York and Washington, DC. The availability of AAA’s largest member insurers is listed below. If you live in a state not covered by these insurers, your policy may be underwritten by a different company.
In addition to home, auto and life insurance, AAA also offers many other products and services. For full access to all of AAA’s services, policyholders must purchase an AAA membership, but remember that perks will vary based on your regional club. These may include:
AAA’s corporate sustainability efforts vary based on region, but recent reports from member insurers indicate a high level of dedication to environmental and social sustainability.AAA Northeast, for instance, has set goals of purchasing only electric vehicles by 2030, using 100 percent renewable energy by 2035 and achieving carbon neutrality by 2045. CSAA’s2023 Environmental, Social and Governance Report announced a 50 percent reduction in greenhouse gas emissions — a goal originally set for 2025 — and a $25M investment in the California Wildfire Innovation Fund.
The way you file a claim with AAA will depend on your regional club. Each club has its own phone number to file claims, so you’ll need to head to AAA’s website and input your ZIP code. Once you have been redirected to your specific regional AAA site, you can search for the claims center and find information on how to file a claim there. You could also contact yourlocal AAA office or agent.
On average, AAA car insurance costs $52 per month for a minimum coverage policy and $193 for full coverage. Keep in mind that these are national averages; your exact rate will change depending on a myriad of personal factors.
Insurance is not immune toinflation. When prices for everyday goods rise, it is not uncommon for insurance premiums to rise with them. Additionally, insurance is a highly individual product, and what you pay will change based on your claims history, location, number of discounts you qualify for and more.
To cancel your AAA insurance policy, you may call their customer service at 1-877-387-8378 or contact a local AAA branch.
Bankrate utilizes Quadrant Information Services to analyze April 2025 rates for all ZIP codes and carriers in all 50 states and Washington, D.C. Rates are weighted based on the population density in each geographic region. Quoted rates for our base profile are based on the following characteristics and coverage levels:
Bodily injury liability
$100,000 per personProperty damage liability
$50,000 per accidentPersonal injury protection
$100,000 per accidentUninsured motorist bodily injury
$100,000 per personCollision deductible
$500Comprehensive deductible
$500These rates were calculated based on the following insurance credit tiers assigned to our drivers: “poor, average, good (base) and excellent.” Insurance credit tiers factor in your official credit scores but are not dependent on that variable alone. Four states prohibit or limit the use of credit as a rating factor in determining auto insurance rates: California, Hawaii, Massachusetts and Michigan.
Rates were calculated by evaluating our base profile with the following incidents applied: clean record (base), at-fault accident, single speeding ticket, single DUI conviction and lapse in coverage.
Rates were calculated by evaluating our base profile with the ages 18-60 (base: 40 years) applied. Depending on age, drivers may be a renter or homeowner. Age is not a contributing rating factor in Hawaii and Massachusetts due to state regulations.
These are sample rates and should only be used for comparative purposes.
Our Bankrate Score considers variables our insurance editorial team determined impacts policyholders’ experiences with an insurance company. These rating factors include a robust assessment of each company’s product availability, financial strength ratings, online capabilities and customer and claims support accessibility. Each factor was added to a category, and these categories were weighted in a tiered approach to analyze how companies perform in key customer-impacting categories.
Each category was assigned a metric to determine performance, and the weighted sum adds up to a company’s total Bankrate Score — out of 5 points. Our scoring model provides a comprehensive view, indicating when companies excel across several key areas and highlighting where they fall short.
Tier scores are unweighted to show the company's true score in each category out of a possible five points.

In May 2024, Bankrate collaborated with market research firm SliceMR to survey over 1,500 insurance customers nationwide, asking policyholders to rate their insurer’s cost, coverage, customer support and overall experience on a five-point scale. Bankrate and SliceMR collected and analyzed these customer ratings, along with website analytics and responses to three open-ended questions regarding customer experience. Responses are based on individual policyholders’ policy details and personal experience, and therefore cannot be verified for accuracy. Users received an incentive for their feedback. All ratings are unedited and have not been reviewed or approved by insurance carriers. User-generated ratings are separate from carrier Bankrate Scores — which are calculated based onour proprietary methodology — and may not match.
