| Who are the Assyrians? TheAssyrians of today are the indigenous Aramaic-speakingdescendants of the ancient Assyrian people, one of theearliest civilizations emerging in the Middle East, and havea history spanning over6760years.
Although the Assyrian empire ended in 612 B.C., history isreplete withrecorded details of thecontinuous presence of theAssyrian people until the present time. Assyrians are not Arabian or Arabs, we are not Kurdish, ourreligion is not Islam. The Assyrians are the indigenousAramaic-speaking Christian people of the Middle East, with our own unique language, culture and heritage. Assyria, the land of the indigenous Assyrians ["OurSmallest Ally"], was partitioned after World War I by the victoriousAllies, and iscurrently under occupation by Kurds, Turks, Arabs and Persians.
The Assyrians are astateless people and continue to be religiously andethnically persecuted in the Middle East due to Islamic fundamentalism,Arabization and Kurdificationpolicies, leadingto land expropriations and forced emigration to the West. For more information, please read aboutAssyrians.
What is the history of the word Assyrian? TheEnglish word “Assyrian” comes from classical Greek “Assurios”through Latin “Assyrius”; the Greeks borrowed it inthe 8th century BC directly from the Assyrians, who at thattime called themselves “Assurayeh,” originating from theircapital city “Assur”.

TheAramaic word “Athourayeh”was likewise borrowed from Assyrian, but earlier, in the12th century BC, when the later “Assurayeh” waspronounced “Athourayeh” [the sound (th) shifted to(s) in Assyrian about 1100 BC]; still earlier, about2300-1600 BC, the word had been pronounced “Ashur”and “Ashourayeh”. The initial syllable in “Assurayeh”was frequently dropped in the Neo-Assyrian period (900-600BC), so that “Assurayeh” also had a variant “Surayeh,”which the Greeks took over as "Surios" (the Englishequivalent being Syrian). There was originally no differencein meaning between Assurayeh/Surayeh and Assurios/Surios;both meant the same thing. The self-designations of modern Assyrians,Sūryōyō andSūrāyā, are both derived from the ancient Assyrian word for "Assyrian",Aššūrāyu. For more information: TheReality of the Title Assyrian
