Designs of the colonial coat of arms of Macao in 1934

    Reference code(s) : MO/AH/AC/SA/01/14775

A record of an official correspondence sent by the Public Works Services to the governor of Macao on 20 March 1934 is enclosed with five designs proposed for the colonial coat of arms of Macao. One of the designs was created by Macao Chinese architect José Chan (1896 - 1985) on the basis of the idea of infantry lieutenant António Santa Clara Ferreira.

Following the review and selection by the Government Council, the designs were submitted by the Macao government on 7 June 1934 for the approval of the Portuguese Minister of Colonies. However, none of the designs proposed by Macao were adopted and eventually the Ministry of Colonies promulgated the coat of arms that it drew up for each of the eight Portuguese colonies in May 1935.
