Office of the Inspector General (OIG)

We are an independent and objective unit within the National Archives and Records Administration (NARA) that helps the Agency more effectively and efficiently meet its mission. We bring particularly serious problems, abuses, or deficiencies to the immediate attention of Congress while keeping the Archivist of the United States informed.

The Federal Acquisition Regulation (FAR) requires contractors to timely notify the relevant Office of Inspector General (OIG) whenever there is credible evidence to believe that a violation(s) of criminal law and/or the civil False Claims Act have occurred in connection with a Federal contract. If making a report, NARA contractors may use the Hotline contacts listed above.

Congress passed the Inspector General Act of 1978 (Public Law 95-452) establishing Offices of Inspector General within 12 Federal Agencies. In 1988 the Act was revised (Inspector General Act of 1978, as amended) to incorporate other Federal agencies including the National Archives and Records Administration
