- Reviewed in the United States on August 10, 2006M. Allen Greenbaum's excellent review mostly says it all for me. Apart from the other criticisms, yes, Woodstock is absolutely murdered: that bass riff is not just dated and inappropriate to the song, it is boring in its own right.
However I think he was a little harsh in his criticism of Tom Scott's contributions - he plays some tasty sax, definitely not dated from my point of view. And I think Joni and the band sound good together on the first track.
My other disagreement with Mr Greenbaum and other reviewers is their seeming lack of regard for the last 2 songs which I happen to really like. Apart from the first track these are the only ones where Joni's singing styles and the band's feel and groove really fit together: reminiscent of the best Steely Dan - sophisticated pop that can serve as high class background music or rewarding listening music. Being completely different in feel from every other song on the CD, I suspect they were written with this particular band in mind, or at least more time and thought was given to the arrangements.
As a fan of Mitchell's stunningly artistic vocal decisions and delivery I would buy this cd just for her rendition of Both Sides Now, despite the last part of the song being wrecked by the incongruous funk-style bass and the cheesy ending. The 3 star rating is only in comparison with Joni's best ( such as Mingus, Hissing of Summer Lawns, Clouds, Shadows and Light).
Edit: In light of comment below I have changed star rating to "5". - Reviewed in the United States on May 1, 2024Good album music CD. I got the record albums years ago. The CD sounds better than the records.
- Reviewed in the United States on June 30, 2023'Miles of Aisles' was a live performance...Joni with Tom Scott and the L.A. Express. I was fortunate enough to see them in concert that year, in Louisville, KY. Listening to this recording is like revisiting that concert...giving me miles of 'smiles'. Highly recommended!
- Reviewed in the United States on February 23, 2007I agree with the reviewers who find Tom Scott and the L.A. Express to be a detriment to Joni's sound -- compare this band to the superlative band she toured with on Shadows and Light (Metheny, Pastorius) and the deficiencies are obvious. But then I've had a grudge against Scott ever since he mucked up George Harrison's Extra Texture (Read All About It).
Turn out the lights and put on the second half -- Joni lights up the acoustic, sparsely-accompanied set with her incredible voice and spirit. I love her delicate, committed versions of "Circle Game" and "Both Sides Now," the beautiful "Real Good for Free," the aching version of "People's Party."
It's worth picking this up for the acoustic set. Also, the inside photos of Joni are precious -- we love you, thank you for your art. - Reviewed in the United States on June 6, 2021An excellent and interesting live recording of a genuine musical artist. Jone Mitchell is a careful, meticulous recording talent and generally only issues high grade recordings. In my opinion, this disc is one of the very finest live recordings that I have listened to. Its treatment of the songs is faithful, yet interesting when compared to the originals. I love this record. My opinion is colored by my view that Mitchell is one of the top musicians and song writers of the generation that finds its roots in the sixties and seventies.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 19, 2010I bought this on vinyl about 18 months ago.. have since purchased the CD.
As a Jazz/Rock/Fusion guitarist, I must say I'm totally obsessed with Robben Ford's work on this album. Especially the rhythm guitar on tracks like 'The Last Time I Saw Richard', 'Carey' and 'You Turn Me On, I'm A Radio'
Tom Scott & The LA Express. Brilliant band!.. Am trying to track down a cheap copy of their first album, but seems to be quite collectable and therefore unobtainable.
I find it hard to believe some people are not happy with this band's take on Joni's wonderful and deeply affecting songs. This version of 'Big Yellow Taxi' for instance isn't so different from versions of Joni performing it solo at the time, similar tempo and upbeat rock. They just added rhythm section and a sax solo! If you want to hear a great and empathetic rhythm section, this is it.
This album confirms Joni Mitchell's genius, artistic decisions and sensibility.. and even amusing. - Reviewed in the United States on January 23, 2017If you're a fan, or if you're just wondering who Joni Mitchell is, this live set (along with "Shadows and Light") should be a requirement for your collection. It's not the "Blue" or "Ladies of the Canyon" Joni (which are all well and good, and worthy of inclusion in their own right) but jazz Joni, post-"Court and Spark". I've always enjoyed live sets from my favorite artists (e.g., Hornsby's "Noisemakers" and Allman Brothers "Fillmore East") for the sense of "real" music-in-the-moment and on-stage relationship... that sense of "being there". I saw Joni at Waco, Texas in 1975 with the L.A. Express lineup that produced "Miles of Aisles", and cueing this set up is transportative. Highly recommended.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 21, 2014Don't trust anyone who says Joni Mitchell isn't five stars... billions of lightyears of stars. If you have an appreciation for good music, listen to Joni Mitchell. Whether you are into folk, jazz, soul, blues, funk, rock, bluegrass/country, world... Joni Mitchell has all of it. Her range of diversity, similar to the Beatles, is what makes her music so appealing.
Her live Miles of Ailes album is her best album by far. Get it!
If you are thinking about expanding your listening and don't know where to start, listen to these:
Raised on Robbery, Harry's House/Centerpiece, Overture/Cotton Avenue, Ladies of the Canyon, Chelsea Morning, You Turn Me on I'm a Radio, Carey, California, Woodstock... then see how you feel. You may fall in love with Joni before you even know all of her music.

5.0 out of 5 starsLa tournée 1974 de la Grande Joni
- gregory bruce kerrReviewed in Australia on April 1, 2024

5.0 out of 5 starsJoni Mitchell
I was once so inspired by Joni Mitchell that I taped myself singing her songs with a battery powered cassette tape recorder. I didn't know all the lyrics but enough to give the songs a try. My voice didn't please me however and that was the end of any thought of a singing career. I'm still a fan of Joni, proud she is from Canada. - 横山 功Reviewed in Japan on October 1, 2021
5.0 out of 5 stars初期の代表曲を集めたライブ音源
Joni Mitchellのライブは、「シャドウズ アンド ライツ」をよく聴いていたが、これは1974年のものらしく彼女のみずみずしい歌声が聴ける。「You Turn Me On I’m A Radio」から「Love or Money」まで、弾き語りとバンドを従えての圧巻のボーカルが素晴らしい。文句なしの5つ星。 - pushkarReviewed in Spain on February 14, 2021
