The thrilling adventure based on the acclaimed TV seriesStar Trek: Picard!

Following the explosive events seen in season one of
Star Trek: Picard, Raffi Musiker finds herself torn between returning to her old life as a Starfleet Intelligence officer or something a little more tame—teaching at the Academy, perhaps. The decision is made for her though when a message from an old contact—a Romulan spy—is received, asking for immediate aid. With the help of Elnor and assistance from Jean-Luc Picard, Raffi decides to take on this critical mission—and quickly learns that past sins never stay buried. Finding the truth will be complicated, and deadly…

Una McCormack, I know why you write for Picard.

This is not really a Picard book. Its more like one more Deep Space Nine Sequel, and I don't mind, because DS9 was my favourite ST series after the original one. But it's a bit of false advertising. This book is actually about Garak, and I liked it insofar as it closed his story in canon for me, much like ST Beyond closed Spocks story. I didn't particularly like the ending, but honestly I did not like much of what was created in the franchise after the last episodes of Voyager aired. Mc Cormack is a good writer, and if I think of this book as just another scifi novel, its quite enjoyable. I agree with other reviewers that the character Elnor comes across as somewhat cartoonish and comic relief, but that seems to be his character in the series. Also, if you are a big fan of the Bajoran faith, you probably should read this with some caution.

The premise is an interesting one. Garak has always been a mysterious character, which in my opinion remained very ambigious throughout the series. While the books following the series have been trying hard to redeem him and show us what he was really thinking, we never actually know this in the series, since he could be lying all the time. We only know that he isn't very squeamish about killing people when it serves his objectives (Garak may actually be the character who got away with personally murdering the most people in cold blood in ST, including getting away with attempted genocide).

The previous books established that he felt a lot of remorse for what he did in his time in the Obsidian Order and tried to guide Cardassia towards democracy. The problem with that is, that during the series we were supposed to believe that Cardassia was a fascist state that has been fascist for hundreds of years, and that the Obsidian Order was the main tool to enforce that fascism, an agency which covered all of the Cardassian Union including Bajor with elaborate surveillance and killed off all resistance, plus had an extensive and extremely efficient spy network comparable to Section 31 and the Tal Shiar (and then spontaneously vanished when some ships were destroyed by the Dominion...). It is also hinted a lot (although never really proven) that Garak was one of the leaders of this Order, basically the Franz Josef Huber to Tain's Himmler. But this, were it true, would put a lot of moral ambiguity into what happened during the series, which apparently can't be lived with. So the books essentially retconned this, telling us he never really did anything truly awfull while climbing up the ladder to become Enabran Tain's most trusted operative, and is, in essence, a good and often tragically misunderstood man in a bad situation who made some mistakes. Which made the initial idea that the Bajoran equivalent of the Mossad had found something suggesting otherwise interesting, but of course the book does not really follow up on this. Instead it tries to retire Garak honorably, and if the ending is a punishment or a reward remains for the reader to decide. Does it do the character justice? I guess that depends on what you thought of the Garak the books created. I have a hard time imagining the Garak from the series retiring this way, but then, I also imagined the the Cardassian Union much more like The Man in the High Castle than how it was later described in the books.

Like all other books from the new Trek shows this book is meant to be canon. These books are meant to provide back stories, extra info, etc on events and characters in Discovery, Picard and Strange New Worlds that simply couldn't be shown on screen. One of the problems with almost all of these books, except this one, is that it seems that Paramount requires the authors to make the book a certain length, which means that almost all of these books are too long. Some are just somewhat too long and others could easily have up to 100 pages cut out and not lose anything. This isn't the case with Second Self. The author does a great job telling a multi-era story than never lags or makes the reader say "GET ON WITH IT!!" Also, the author really respects the Roddenberry/Berman era of Trek (unlike the producers of Discovery) and really ties things from the current shows in well with what came before.

This book was awesome! As others noted it was more of a Grand Finale if you will to DS9 then the Picard series. I have read many ST books. I love reading ST as well watching. This book was extra special to me! I’ve enjoyed the whole series including, Firewall, which is the next book in the series however I literally read this book in less than a day because I enjoyed the story so much! Enjoy!

Una knows Trek. Once again she has crafted a story that kept my attention. Gave us more insight into new and old characters. And possibly gave us an exit of a very well known character.

I don't want to spoil the big reveals in this book, so I will try to keep this short and sweet. Readers will unlock some secrets of Raffi Mussiker's past, and also a surprise from DS9, and it all leads up to the beginning of season 2 of Picard. Overall, though it drags in certain places, the author deftly weaves a mystery box with a narrative that leads to a deeper understanding of some pivotal characters in Trek, and I think she's a great choice for these tie-in novels, because I think she has a great respect for the source material, but she still adds enough to her books to give them actual weight and consequence, far more than I'm used to getting from stories like this.

And I was thinking I was reading a book about Picard yeah not so much! It was filled with many unexpected twists & turns with truthful reflection on Picards behalf.
Some of the narrative wasn't completely clear until the end & I'm almost tempted to restart the book but not just yet - I'll keep it in my library and return another time for what I'm certain will be an excellent second reading 😊

Second book written by Una McCormack in the Picard series. Caution. There are 18 instances of the f-word in this book. For an otherwise skilled writer who offers words like "oeuvre," "rankle," "exarch," "chutzpah," and "imprimatur", I find the repeated use of this low-brow term to be a betrayal. Word choice is an offense to both the eyes and concentration, which detracts from this otherwise competently written novel.

Back in the world of Star Trek: Picard, Una McCormack tells a story of what Raffi got up to between seasons one and two, when she’s sent on a mission to hunt for a missing war criminal.

I love how this novel turned out to be nothing like what I expected. It’s not you old fashioned monster of the week type adventure - but actually something deep and character-driven and using McCormack’s rich knowledge and love for the franchise to create something that feels true to so many characters.

It’s fascinating to see this novel because it does take us in a different, yet equally satisfying, direction from that taken with the previous novel continuity, and shows us an alternative view of what might have happened to a beloved character.

    It’s a really great thought-provoking adventure.

Una McCormack is definitely my favourite star trek writer and this is no exception. I love these books which fill in back stories and gaps in TV series. Plus it has my favourite DS9 character too.
