- Reviewed in the United States on January 4, 2007Format: HardcoverUriah Phillips Levy led an amazing life which saw him rise from a mere cabin boy to the highest rank in the US Navy, that of Commodore. Moreover, he managed to do this despite the fact that he did not come up through the ranks of the Navy, a fact that was always held against him, as well as being a Jew. His adventurous life included several encounters with pirates, impressment in the British Navy, battles in the War of 1812, imprisonment in England, a duel with an anti-Semitic naval officer, an offer for a commission in the Brazilian navy, and several court-martials. Throughout it all he was a man of character and integrity, fighting for his beloved Republic as well as his ideals. He did not believe in flogging, and would not practice it on his ships. This eventually became naval policy. He idolized Thomas Jefferson and commisioned a statue of him to placed at the Capitol in Washington. After hearing that Monticello was in shambles, Levy bought Jefferson's home, and restored it to its previous splendor before turning it over to the public. Author Robert Abrahams is a gifted storyteller, and there is no boring part in this wonderful book. Although this book is no longer in print, several other books about Uriah Levy have been published since.
