How customer reviews and ratings work
Customer Reviews, including Product Star Ratings help customers to learn more about the product and decide whether it is the right product for them.
To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we don’t use a simple average. Instead, our system considers things like how recent a review is and if the reviewer bought the item on Amazon. It also analyzed reviews to verify trustworthiness.

- Reviewed in the United States on June 19, 2011After reading "Historia concisa do Brasil" by Boris Fausto -a book that I enjoyed a lot-, I was eager to read the book by Baer. I thought that it was going to be a good complement on the economic front. What a disappointment! The book is too descriptive, too many tables and numbers, and it follows a very boring chronological pattern for each chapter. I was expecting that the second part, the thematic part, was going to be better... but it again follow a descriptive and chronological pattern... and very little analysis. The best chapter is the 13th chapter (co authored with Mueller). The author also has not courage to take positions: in many cases he presents the "two sides", but he avoids to deliver proper ideas. I thought that a book that has reached its sixth edition would be great, but after reading it, I realized why it was the sixth edition... surely all the previous editions became outdated too quickly, and to have a sixth one was the only way to remain in the book market.

4.0 out of 5 starsRiver
This is an indispensable book for anyone interested in modern Brazil, but it contains an extraordinary error. On page 317 it says that the River Paraiba do Sul flows into Guanabara Bay. It does no such thing, and would have to flow over a mountain range to do it. It is remarkable that this has gone uncorrected through six editions. - mr mark jakemanReviewed in the United Kingdom on November 26, 2014
