The semi-biographical story of the life of Cattle Baron, John Simpson Chisum, and his relationship with a beautiful slave. Told in 1970 as a retrospective revelation, by their 84-year-old granddaughter, Eugie Thomas. The telling of the story was triggered by Eugie going to see the John Wayne movie 'Chisum', and wanting to share the fuller picture of their lives, times and romance, while she still could. The story is punctuated by epic cattle drives, Chisum's battles to protect his land and herds from rustlers and natives, the Lincoln County War, and the horrors of the American Civil War.

Russ was born in the early 1960s, in England. One of his earliest memories was of his grandmother buying him a toy John Wayne Winchester rifle. Her earliest memory was Jesse James being shot, 80 years before.

There is a good chance that his grandma's love of Westerns subliminally got him on the road to writing his own. Despite being a big Western movie fan and Duke Wayne being his hero, he is often frustrated by the historical inaccuracies portrayed on the 'silver screen'.

His ambition is to write a series of Western novels, mostly with romantic twists, which merge good story-telling with well-researched history, revealing what the Wild Frontier was really like.

When not novel writing, Russ loves tinkering with Land Rovers, so if it's powered by all-four-wheels or all-four-legs, it gets his attention.

Russ is a member of The Western Writers of America.

Here is a story retold in 1970 by John Chisum's 84 year old granddaughter, Eugie Thomas, to reveal the rest of the story before she is gone. The author takes you on a journey to explore the life and struggles John Chisum faces to protect his land, herd, and family from natives, rustlers, the Lincoln County Wars, and the horrors that took place in Cooke County. Book is about having faith, hope and love to overcome adversities. If you love Texas History, western, interracial romance, and unsuspecting endings, this book will keep you entertained.
I salute Russ Brown for his commitment to research and share the the rest of the story. Not everything is black and white.

I found this book out of a personal need to see John Chisum in a better light. I was not a fan of his at all, since I am influenced by the Nuevomexicano take on Billy the Kid’s interactions with the cattle baron. I do believe the version of old timers like Jesús Silva, whose grandson Chano repeated in a 1997 interview that Chisum failed to pay Billy what he owed him, which exacerbated the Kid’s rustling activities. Of course, we all have choices, and Billy chose that path, which was not the wisest. Willing to forge a deeper opinion of the Chisum character, I reminded myself of the times when he had welcomed the Regulators at his ranch. I knew Sallie Chisum was good friends with the Kid, and I was willing to give Sallie’s uncle a chance to upgrade my appreciation of his character. Thanks to Russ Brown, I can say “Mission Accomplished”. His (real) granddaughter, Eugie, is so endearing in this book, and so knowledgeable, without ever sounding arrogant. I saw her as a wise, mischievous and loving old lady. I like the writer’s choice to give his readers this History lesson through a dialogue between Eugie and Danny, followed by wonderful adventures in which we will not only discover important places in the Chisum saga, but also dig deeper in the supporting characters’ psychology. The writer is a movie lover, and I appreciated the movie ‘winks’ throughout his chapters. I was also fascinated by the—very credible to me— relationship between one of those characters and Queen Victoria. The writer dares to explore complicated topics such as PTSD for war veterans, interracial (non)marriages or clashes between very different cultures. His quill is the time machine that takes us back to those Wild Frontier Days… I particularly appreciated his take on the Lincoln War, given his European / British origins, something very important to bear in mind when analyzing that chapter of New Mexican History. After reading the novel, I found myself singing a French song whose lyrics "c'est jamais noir ou blanc, mais d'un gris différent, mon fils" (it's never either black or white, rather a subtle grey hue, my son) perfectly summarize the story's intent as stated in the pitch above. I wholeheartedly recommend this book and am grateful for such a great find! A true gold nugget.

The life and times of Cow John Chisum have been widely written about while aspects of his personal life not so much. The story of Miss Chisum follows the cattle baron’s life from Tennessee across Texas to New Mexico as well as chronicles his personal life. Based on the recollections of his granddaughter, this semi-biographical story provides a richer look into Chisum’s private life and personal loyalties. A touching love story of the times about the timelessness of connections between Chisum and his ‘forever only’ woman, Jensie, and their two daughters. A definite good read that feeds the heart.

I looked at it as part of a project I'm working on, hoping to get more background about John Chisum. Which is to say, I didn't expect much.
I was pleasantly surprised! History, from pre-Civil War to recent, of Texas and New Mexico; blended with insightful comments on society and relationships. Between the whites, some of whom owned slaves, and blacks, but also between them and the natives. And overlaying it, the story of Miss Chisum, former slave, and common-law wife of John Chisum. Read it; you'll enjoy the journey.

I originally bought this on kindle, but found it a bit confusing. I enjoyed it, so I bought a hard copy so I can flick back and forth. Historical accuracy and authors imagination join together well.

5.0 out of 5 starsA colourful story and then some! Outstanding read

Miss Chisum is pitched as a Western Romance, but is far deeper than that. It gives a real insight into the Wild Frontier. Who knew that so many Cowboys were Black, who knew it took three minutes to reload a revolver in the 1850s. Hollywood has a lot to answer for.

Also, an intriguing sub-plot threaded with Kodak Moments, but I won’t spoil that for you. As the subtitle says, ‘a colourful story’.
