“[Itty-Bitty Kitty-Corn] has a big heart.” —New York Times
Kitty thinks she might be a unicorn.
She feels so perfectly unicorn-y! “Neigh!” says Kitty.
But when Unicornclop clop clops over, sweeping his magnificent tail and neighing a mighty neigh, Kitty feels no bigger than a ball of lint.
Can this unlikely pair embrace who they are and trulyseeeach other?
In their first picture book together, the magical, bestselling team of Shannon Hale and LeUyen Pham put their horns together for the most heart-bursting, tail-twitching, fuzzy-feeling, perfectly unicorn-y story imaginable.

Editorial Reviews
Review
"What ostensibly starts out as an almost criminally cute tale of pretend play transforms into something much more: a celebration of claiming and naming one’s identity and having it affirmed by others." ―Publishers Weekly
"This newest Hale-Pham collaboration features appealing characters, laugh-out-loud humor, and clever plot twists."―Booklist
"Hale and Pham bring the charm and whimsy of their Princess in Black series to this picture book, conveying the same message of self-love and confidence with the candy-colored art and a wide-eyed, bushy-tailed feline who is the dream of cat meme makers everywhere." ―Bulletin of the Center for Children's Books
"There’s poignancy... A paean to self-perception, self-actualization, and finding one’s people amongst the neigh-sayers."―The Horn Book Magazine
"Unicorn fans will definitely identify with Hale’s protagonist and respond well to Pham’s bright cartoons... Likely to cause some imaginative prancing among unicorn and kitty lovers." ―Kirkus Reviews
"A breathtakingly adorable picture book. . .capture(s) the poignance of the struggle to find oneself."

About the authors
Brief content visible, double tap to read full content.Full content visible, double tap to read brief content.Shannon Hale is the New York Times best-selling author of over fifty books, selling fifteen million copies in North America and translated into twenty-five languages worldwide. Her novels for young readers include the fantasies The Goose Girl, Kind of a Big Deal, and Book of a Thousand Days; science fiction novel Dangerous; and Newbery Honor-recipient Princess Academy. One of her novels for the adult crowd, Austenland, was made into movie starring Keri Russell and Jennifer Coolidge. With LeUyen Pham, she created her best-selling graphic novel memoir Friends series and the Itty-Bitty Kitty-Corn picture books. She co-writes books with her husband Dean Hale, like the Eisner-nominee Rapunzel's Revenge (with Nathan Hale), graphic novels for DC Comics about young Wonder Woman (with Victoria Ying), and best-selling chapter book series The Princess in Black (with LeUyen Pham). She lives in Utah with four human children and two ridiculous cats.
Brief content visible, double tap to read full content.Full content visible, double tap to read brief content.LeUyen Pham is the award-winning and critically acclaimed illustrator of more than one hundred books for children. LeUyen (pronounced Lay-Win) is the New York Times bestselling illustrator of the Julianne Moore’s picture book series, Freckleface Strawberry, Kelly DiPucchio’s picture book Grace for President, and Shannon and Dean Hale’s middle grade series Princess in Black. LeUyen is also the illustrator of God’s Dream by Archbishop Desmond Tutu, the Alvin Ho series by Lenore Look, the Vampirina Ballerina picture book series by Anne Marie Pace, and The Boy Who Loved Math by Deborah Heiligman. Her more recent books include Caldecott Honor Book Bear Came Along by Richard Morris and her self-authored Outside, Inside, a recollection of our year in lockdown.
LeUyen is the author and illustrator of Big Sister Little Sister, There’s No Such Thing as Little, A Piece of Cake, All the Things I Love About You, and The Bear Who Wasn’t There. She has also contributed to the Piggy and Elephant Like Reading! book series with her book The Itchy Book. She is also the co-creator, along with Shannon Hale, of the groundbreaking bestselling graphic memoirs Real Friends and Best Friends.
Born in Vietnam, LeUyen and her family fled Vietnam in the final days of the Vietnam War. Growing up in Southern California, LeUyen always loved to doodle and draw, but her mother insisted she become a lawyer. For two years, LeUyen attended UCLA, where she majored in political science. Fortunately, the head of the art department spotted her artistic talent and helped her change course. LeUyen got an interview at the prestigious Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, won a scholarship to pay the tuition, and spent the next three years in an accelerated program and earned a degree in illustration. Following school, LeUyen worked as a layout artist for DreamWorks Feature Animation, and illustrated books on the side. Her first picture book was Can You Do This, Old Badger? and was written by Eve Bunting.
These days, LeUyen lives in Los Angeles with her husband Alex (who is also an artist), and their two adorable sons, Adrien and Leo. She also has a cat named Sardine and a gecko named Kumquat. She adores traveling and speaking, but given her way would spend all her time making Star Wars-themed birthday cakes.

- Reviewed in the United States on September 8, 2025Format: HardcoverVerified PurchaseLove this book! We have a couple of these books and they are so cute. The colors are great and the story line is entertaining. The book is just long enough for my four year old and to hold her attention. Looking forward to more!
- Reviewed in the United States on January 10, 2026Format: HardcoverVerified PurchaseThis book was great. My seven week old was able to hold interest as I read to her and it has a cute plot. Looking forward to finding more books like this for her.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 26, 2022Format: HardcoverVerified PurchaseThis book made me a little teary. The premise is the value in having someone see you for who you are and who you want to be regardless of what everyone else sees. It's about believing in yourself despite the bullies and naysayers and the importance of kindness and unconditional love. The illustrations are adorable, vibrant and fun. The book is a win for my cat and unicorn loving toddlers. The underlying message is a little deep for my toddlers (2 and 4) but it's a good conversation starter and the sweet pictures and story keep them interested even if they don't fully get it yet.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 27, 2025Format: HardcoverVerified PurchaseMy girls are absolutely obsessed! We have 2 of the books in this series and they love them. I love the message. The illustration is wonderful. Nothing to complain about ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
- Reviewed in the United States on December 31, 2025It was excellent child loved it
- Reviewed in the United States on September 5, 2023Format: KindleVerified PurchaseCute book about the power of imagination, staying true to yourself, and finding supportive friends you mesh with rather than worrying too much about what people who say dismissive things about you might think.
Note: In the 1- and 2- star reviews there's currently a review-bombing campaign by bad-faith reviewers who are making obviously false claims about this book. Not only are they making stuff up that's not there but there's nothing in the book that could possibly be objectionable unless you object, as one reviewer does, that "It has an agenda to push for little kids that they can be whatever they want to be…"
I would encourage readers to report reviews that willfully misrepresent the product, since those reviews are a violation of policy. - Reviewed in the United States on September 8, 2023Format: HardcoverVerified PurchaseThis book might be better as a lesson for adults not to not to react until you check for yourself. It is so sad that, beginning in May, reviews started showing up claiming this book has some hidden agenda. The illustrations are cute, and the theme seems to be that a kitty and a unicorn can enjoy the same things.
It is possible for books to contain codes. It's a plot twist in many a mystery. However, for a code to communicate something, the decoder has to know it. I am pretty sure all the 4-year-olds reading this book see a cute kitty and dashing unicorn. - Reviewed in the United States on October 10, 2025Format: HardcoverVerified PurchaseLove the book, beautiful colors
