- Reviewed in the United States on December 29, 2020Format: KindleI first read this book as an MA student in history. It was and remains one of the finest historical analyses I've encountered. Schoenwald steers readers back to the mechanics of the Reagan's ascent to the presidency, revealing the people and forces that underpinned the career of a powerful but often vacuous actor-turned-politian. Essential reading.

The book not only details a history of the evolution of American conservatism, but it also provides relevant context for American politics today, as conservatives face a schism and liberals wrestle with how (or whether) to work with the ongoing evolution of conservative movement. The book is good for a rigorous academic context, or for folks involved in politics, or for everyday Americans trying to understand where the country has come from and where it is going.
