Review

"Recommended." - CHOICE "Robert Mann s Wartime Dissent in America can be read as a fine collection of wartime dissenting literature, as the story of the growth of ever-greater respect for free speech and tolerance in America, or as a brief history of America s twelve major wars from the much-neglected moral perspective." - Peace Review"Mann explains that his objective in writing Wartime Dissent was to stimulate readers to deeper reflection and debate on the value of dissent and the necessity of guarding and strengthening free speech rights, especially during wartime. With this book, he has not only accomplished this goal but also written an impressive, perceptive treatise about an issue that began with Socrates and continues to this day. Wartime Dissent continues the tradition its author celebrates by telling the stories of courageous Americans who fought for our most fundamental right not despite but because of the battles being waged elsewhere." - American Booksellers Foundation for Free Expression

"Robert Mann, one of America s most dynamic political historians, has written a first-rate book about war and American society. Not of soldiers in the battlefield - but of dissent. Highly recommended." - Douglas Brinkley, Professor of History, Rice University

"Robert Mann beautifully combines historical narrative with actual speeches and writings to show the crucial role that dissent against government policy plays in time of war." - Marjorie Heins, director of the Free Expression Policy Project and author of Not in Front of the Children: "Indecency," Censorship, and the Innocence of Youth

"Once again Robert Mann has gone into the archives, dug out the original sources, and used them to illuminate a vital topic - America s tradition of honest and courageous wartime dissent. Timely and inspiring in today s politics of war, terror, and superheated partisanship." - Brien Hallett, Associate Professor, Matsunaga Institute for Peace, University of Hawai i
