Supergirl Season 2-In My Own Words

- Reviewed in the United States on November 18, 2022+++Warning, this contains spoilers from the first season, but no major season two giveaways+++
Season two of Supergirl represented a big shift for the show. As most are likely aware, the first season of the show aired on CBS, and as a result, was filmed in Los Angeles. After the first season, CBS was going to cancel the show, but The CW, which was airing the other shows in the "Arrowverse", which Supergirl was acknowledged to be a part of (although on another Earth, specifically, Earth 38) through the appearance of The Flash (Grant Gustin) in one of the first season episodes, rescued the show from cancellation. One result of that is that the show switched to filming in Vancouver, where the other Arrowverse shows are filmed, which resulted in a lot of cast turnover. The biggest change in the cast was Peter Facinelli leaving the show altogether so the Max Lord storyline was just dropped, and Calista Flockhart went from a series regular to a recurring character, only appearing in a few episodes.
The season picks up with the aftermath of the ship crash at the end of Season One, in which Kara and the DEO find a man unconscious in the pod, who turns out to be an alien from a sister planet to Krypton called Daxam, named Mon-EL (played by Melissa Benoist's now real-life husband Chris Wood). Daxam and it's people would play a huge role in the big serial arc of the season. The show was a blend of the bad-guy-of-the-week combined with larger storylines, another one of which involved project Cadmus, which has heavy ties to the Luthor family. About a third of the way into the season, we get the big Arrowverse Crossover. Supergirl did not have a dedicated crossover episode this year, but at the end of Episode 8, Barry and Cisco come to Earth 38 seeking Kara's help, which sets up the Invasion Crossover event that played out on Flash, Arrow, and Legends of Tomorrow. The season ends on a cliffhanger that sets up the third season.
For those who get the Blu-Ray, the A/V quality is great, and there are a decent amount of extras. Those include a 10-minute featurette on the alien fight-club episode, a commentary track on the episode directed by Kevin Smith with Smith and the series creator, a featurette on the various aliens on the show that runs about 20 minutes, a half-hour portion of the 2016 Comic-Con panel, and short trivia tracks.
Overall, the season is good but different. The cast turnover was definitely a change in the direction and feel of the show, and losing Facinelli, Flockhart, and Laura Benanti (who played Kara's mother and aunt in Season 1, but left the show after having a child) hurt, but the cast did add Katie McGrath (from the BBC series Merlin), Floriana Lima, and the Arrowverse's Superman, played by Tyler Hoechlin (from the series Teen Wolf). Having the show more closely aligned with the Arrowverse ultimately helped it as the characters could be more involved in the crossovers. This season also included a great set of guest stars including Teri Hatcher who played Lois Lane on Lois and Clark, and the original live-action Wonder Woman, Lynda Carter. The show definitely had to find its footing again (it helped that most of the series regulars returned to the show), but once it did, I think it was very entertaining. The show was definitely not a carbon copy of the other Arrowverse shows, which was a good thing, and does a good job standing on its own. So, while it has a different feel than it did in season one, I do think it is still worth watching. - Reviewed in the United States on February 4, 2017Love this show not so much for the action but rather for the relationship building, quick quips of humor and Winn's facial expressions. I totally love the sister relationship that Kara and Alex have the most. Without that sisterly bond, the show wouldn't be what it is. Never lose sister night! I also appreciate the fact that Kara, Alex and J'onn will always be there for each other, no matter what. I love the Alex/Maggie romance and I am hoping the writers can get Kara and Mon El to that point of chemistry eventually. Is it cheesy at times? Oh yea, but who doesn't like a little cheese at times.
The target audience is middle age woman...aka.. me. There are adult themes in the plots, including but not limited to homosexuality. If you feel like your child is not ready for adult themes then you might want to hold off watching until a later date. My 13 year old twin boys watch with me and then they make me watch The Flash with them. We have heated discussions on who would win if Supergirl and The Flash battled. Good family bonding. So, as far as recommending the show for a child, it depends on the child and the parent.
Better than last season but I do miss Cat. - Reviewed in the United States on October 24, 2016Wow what a way to open the 2nd season of the Girl of Steel. How? By Bringing in the Man of Steel, what a great opener for the new Supergirl season. Everything you were hoping for and everything you wanted to see the first two episodes delivered. I don't know how they could top it, but it will be fun to watch. Clark Kent/Superman guest appears and aids his cousin with stopping an assassination and fighting off super, android humans with Kryptonite as there power source. It didn't stop the excitement got better and better.
I must admit this Superman (Tyler Hoechlin-Teen Wolf) in Supergirl is more believable, likable and more credible than Henry Cavill (Superman Man of Steel). Yes Henry Cavill has the Brawn and muscled, but Hoechlin does such an incredible job being Superman that I wish he could take Cavils place in the Justice League Movie. Either way Supergirl is starting off super strong and I hope continues! - Reviewed in the United States on March 29, 2017The majority of the season is decent, even good, but one thing has brought the whole season down- Mon-El. Kara barely has her own storyline as the titular character. Sanvers is an amazingly healthy relationship while Karamel is toxic and framed as good. It's really quite disheartening as someone who has been through an abusive relationship to see it play out on the screen yet again, without ever acknowledging the fact that it is toxic. He also takes far more screentime than he should. If Cat Grant was still in Republic City, she'd have sent his butt back to Daxam.
The biggest example I can give about how much he's dragging this show down is when Jeremiah comes back and betrays the DEO. Mon-El is the only person to recognize the valid threat of someone who may have been turned or brainwashed while captured. Alex examines Jeremiah and notes extensive hand damage, but not the metal arm it's attached to. Kara doesn't do even the most basic of x-ray sweeps. J'onn never does a mind-sweep. The lengths they had to go to so they could make the core DEO team bad at their jobs to prop Mon-El up was ridiculous. That Alex would push Kara towards him was out of character. That she would then, the next episode, berate Kara for following his lead (again, on a reasonable suspicion) was stupid. They brought in Mxy, a villain who acts the same way as Mon-El, but called him a bad guy. They had Kara call out all Mon-El's toxic behavior, but then claim it was just a ploy. They have M'gann go back to her planet to fight against her people from a position of nothing, but Mon-El can't be bothered to go back to Daxam as a prince to change their slavery laws. He literally says the only reason he wants to be a hero is to spend time with Kara.
Meanwhile James is wondering where his love interest, his job, his friends, and his screentime has gone.

- rod annertReviewed in Australia on February 9, 2026
