- Reviewed in the United States on February 13, 2023Format: HardcoverVerified PurchaseA gift to my husband who says it’s one of the better books on the subject.
- Reviewed in the United States on June 5, 2013Format: HardcoverVerified PurchaseIf you want an excellent historical overview of ten of the top trainers of this era then this is the book for you. Search as I may for a glaring error in the choice of these legendary characters, I was hard-pressed to come up with any meaningful substitutes. The insights and memories of Mr. Bowen are superb, and illustrate a great love and knowledge of the subject. This book will delight any horseplayer or student of the game. The chapter on Hirsch Jacobs will be an eye-opener to fans of Marty Wolfson and David Jacobson. These two, very extraordinary trainers had to hear how "Uncle Hirsch" did it for half a lifetime, in their own glamorous and extensive trips to the Winner's Circle. The Wolfson and Jaobson pedigree tells it all.

- Reviewed in the United States on September 14, 2015Format: HardcoverVerified PurchaseGreat profile of trainers from racing's classic years including my favorite Whirlaway's trainer Ben Jones.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 19, 2008Format: HardcoverThoroughbred historian Edward L. Bowen chronicles the life and times of the most famous trainers in the "Golden Age of Racing," when the exploits of champions like Man o' War, Equipose and Exterminator were major news events from coast-to-coast.
But - as in any sport - the great athlete has optimum conditioning, which opens the door to performing at grand levels. The trainers who are covered in words and photographs are James G. Rowe, Sr., Sam Hildreth, H. Guy Bedwell, John E. Madden, Max Hirsch, "Sunny" Jim Fitzsimmons, Herbert J. Thompson, Preston Birch, the father-and-son team of Ben A. Jones & Horace A. "Jimmy" Jones and Hirsch Jacobs.
Some of the names may have been lost in the dusty pages of turf history, but Bowen brings these legends to life, while depicting the long hours and sacrifices a trainer makes for those few minutes of fleeting glory in the afternoon.
