Editorial Reviews
Review
'1968 was a turbulent year in our country and a year when President Lyndon Johnson encountered what seemed like an endless series of crises. Kyle Longley has depicted the tone of the times and captured the dilemmas and decisions of LBJ in this compelling book that should be read by any student of that eventful year.' Larry Temple, Special Counsel to President Lyndon Johnson in 1968, Chairman of the LBJ Foundation
'Like King Lear, Lyndon Johnson gave away his power before the end of the play. Kyle Longley's Texas-size epic reveals the tragedy, comedy, pathos, and heroism in the extraordinary events that followed that fateful year, 1968, as seen through the eyes of an American giant.' Elizabeth Cobbs, author of American Umpire
'From the Pueblo crisis to the Chennault affair, 1968 was a year like no other, and Kyle Longley's fast-paced, richly detailed narrative splendidly captures the ups - and mostly downs - from the vantage point of LBJ's White House.' George C. Herring, author of The American Century and Beyond
'Kyle Longley has penned a vivid and insightful portrait of one of the most tumultuous and significant years in American history.' Randall B. Woods, University of Arkansas
'Kyle Longley offers an insightful portrayal of arguably the most complex American president of the Cold War era. What emerges is a fresh appraisal of Lyndon Johnson, a tragic figure contesting the forces of history. In an innovative biographical approach, Longley takes us inside LBJ’s White House during the tumultuous year of 1968. An outstanding work by a master storyteller.' Gregory A. Daddis, Chapman University, California
'Perceptive and unflinching.' Tim Stanley, Literary Review
'Exceptionally well researched, written, organized and presented, LBJ's 1968 is an impressively informative work of outstanding scholarship and unreservedly recommended for both community and academic library 20th Century American History and Political Science collections.' Midwest Book Review
'The year 1968 is ancient history to some; to others it seems like only yesterday. It was LBJ's last year as president, and he was visited by trauma after trauma - the Pueblo crisis, the Prague Spring, the assassinations of Martin Luther King Jr and Robert Kennedy, urban burning and looting, an antiwar movement, a political uprising by Eugene McCarthy and Robert Kennedy challenging his renomination, and so much more … With little relief from the daily tedium of the events of that year, 1968 was one darn thing after another. Longley describes it all well … Recommended.' P. D. Travis, Choice
‘Kyle Longley’s impressive, well-researched book brings new insight to the political and diplomatic events of 1968 … Longley’s book, in addition to its being a fine work of history, provides a template through which to better understand our own times.’ Robert David Johnson, Congress & the Presidency

- Reviewed in the United States on December 27, 2020Format: PaperbackVerified PurchaseKyle Longley has taken an unusual approach to creating a quasi-biography of the President by evaluating the events of a single year (1968) and how the President responded to those events.
The book demonstrates that President Lyndon Johnson was indeed magnanimous at times, yet could still be petty & spiteful at other times. LBJ dealt with some of the most consequential events of the 60's during 1968, including the assassinations of Martin Luther King, Jr. and Bobby Kennedy, the Pueblo incident, and the Soviet overtaking of Czechoslovakia.
By examining these events through the lens of LBJ's responses, we see a new portrait of the man as a caring human who wanted the best for the country - even at his own expense, such as when he gave up his political life in March by announcing that he would not seek nor accept the nomination of his party for President in the 1968 general election. Of course, we also see the consummate politician - the man who "worked the room" and engaged in back room agreements to get what he thought was important, but that's the typical vision of LBJ.
I think I was most surprised by his response to Bobby Kennedy's assassination - the way Longley described it, one would think that LBJ thought of RFK as a brother - not as a political rival, though this was true only after Kennedy had died; in reality, they were fierce political rivals.
I found this book to be extremely well written & argued, and I think it's valuable reading for anyone interested in the tumult of 1968, LBJ the person, or how we, as a country, fared from having this man as our leader - even if it is just through the microcosm of one year. - Reviewed in the United States on September 3, 2018Format: KindleVerified PurchaseI was a freshman at UCSD in 1968 and thus experienced the year as a young man with a 2S deferment, but with HS friends in VN. I had nothing but contempt for LBJ. Reading this book 50 years later gives me pause. Like our current president, Johnson could not admit when he made a mistake and he had an oversized ego. But based on this author’s research I now am coming to the belief that Johnson withdrew from the race, not because of a fear of losing to McCarthy or Kennedy, but because he believed he might have a better chance of bringing the war to an end. Having both sons-in-law headed to VN must have been a factor. This book is definitely worth reading if you want to understand our history leading to Nixon. For me, it is a deeper/better dive into 1968 than the books by Brokow and O’Donnell (which I also valued).
- Reviewed in the United States on August 29, 2018Format: KindleVerified PurchaseGood and complete picture of the times while pointing out LBJ’s good and bad points. It provides better insight to the man.

- Reviewed in the United States on April 12, 2020Format: KindleVerified PurchaseTerrific read about one of the tumultuous years in modern history,a behind the scenes look at how LBJ and his advisors
Dealt with each tragedy.
Definitely recommend this book! - Reviewed in the United States on February 26, 2020Format: KindleVerified PurchaseGreat read on a very important year.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 21, 2018Format: HardcoverVerified PurchaseA well-written account about a tragic year.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 30, 2020Format: HardcoverVerified PurchaseThe book gave a fairly good description of the country in 1968. The year was a nightmare most of it caused by LBJ. The Vietnam war tore the country apart. It pointed out that LBJ wasn't one to admit his mistakes. When he realized it was a mistake to escalate the war in Vietnam he simply walked away from the Presidency. This book, like most other books about LBJ failed to point out that LBJ came to Washington DC a poor man and when he left in 1968 he was worth over $600 million dollars.
