- Reviewed in the United States on April 24, 2013Format: HardcoverThis dictionary is not ideal for most students and learners of Urdu or Hindi. It has a special function though. It is especially useful for determining words by their origin, especially from Persian and Arabic. It gives multiple examples of a word with varying pronunciations and spellings. There are a lot of synonyms in Hindi/Urdu. There is often a Sanskrit, Arabic, Persian and maybe Turkish or English version of the same word and this dictionary is beneficial in that regard. Also this dictionary was developed back when Hindi/Urdu was not as fractured by sectarian considerations. Since the division into Pakistan and India Islamic influence has increased the Arabic emphasis of Urdu vocabulary and Hindu influence has increased the Sanskrit influence in Hindi vocabulary.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 29, 2015The most amazing dictionary I have ever come across. It has helped me in translations of long lost words in farsi, urdu and Hindi. The only problem I have is the very very fine print. Is difficult to read and the paper quality of this edition is not as smooth. A bit rough.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 12, 2016Very poor print and binding, many pages falling out when it arrived and a lot of pages are difficult to read.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 8, 2008Format: HardcoverThe time for delivery was respected, although I must say that it was quite long. But, since I live in Italy I may think it's normal such a time. As far as quality is concerned, the product arrived quite ok, a part from some little signs of the travel (the box was a little ruined as if it had received some strokes during the travel...). The dictionary was ok: it had some "damages" though, but I may presume it's due to the editor, because also in normal bookshops the dictionaries look just like that (or even worse..). The price was perfect: I saved something like 15 on the item even though I had to pay for the delivery.

5.0 out of 5 starsA Dictionary of Urdu, Classical Hindi and English
It is usual for academics to concentrate on the most recent editions of dictionaries but Platt's dictionary of 1904 is a must for anyone interested in 19th century Urdu literature and its development throughout the 20th century. It gives a snapshot of a major world language at a particular period of time and should be considered as important a work as Lane's 'Lexicon' is to English speaking students of classical Arabic. It is a readable, comprehensible and very affordable must buy for anyone with the slightest interest in Indo-European languages for which we are indebted to Manohar its republishers. One person found this helpfulReport - TranslatorReviewed in India on September 23, 2022
5.0 out of 5 starsIndispensable and invaluable for translators
Dictionaries are not like cars, computers or smart-phones where the latest is always the best.
Searching for a Urdu phrase (āmokhtāh paṛhnā), I looked up three printed Urdu-English dictionaries. Here are the entries, although I had to omit the headwords and other words written in Perso-Arabic script:
1. Standard Twentieth Century Dictionary: Urdu into English: Prof. Bashir Ahmad Qureshi; Educational Publishing House; Delhi; Edition: 1997 => “āmokhtāh N.M. (arch.) previous lesson; ADJ.&. SUF. learnt, taught [P. āmokthan]
2. Oxford Urdu-English Dictionary: S.M. Salimuddin & Sahil Anjum; Oxford University Press; First Ed. 2013 => “āmokhtāh [adj.] taught, learnt; [n.m.] previous lesson
3. A Dictionary of Urdū, Classical Hindī and English; John T. Platts; First Ed. 1884, This Edition 2006; Manohar, New Delhi => “āmokhtā [perf. part. of āmokhtān….] part. adj. Taught, learned; -- s.m. That which has been learned; an old lesson:-- āmokhtā paṛhnā, To read over old lessons, to revise
If you are a translator from Urdu which of these would you buy? A dictionary, first published in the second half of the nineteenth century, still remains as relevant as it has been on the day it was first published. This 1259-page tome is an invaluable lexicon for Urdu translators. I have just cited one example but there are numerous others which make this dictionary one of a kind.
Manohar deserves praise for making this dictionary available in print. Perhaps in the next reprint, the publisher would consider some improvement on the small typeface and the quality of paper? - AnastasiaReviewed in Italy on November 20, 2013
4.0 out of 5 starsIl prodotto è buono
il problema è che la data di consegna prevista era dal 6 novembre al 22 novembre e non avendo possibilità di controllare la tracciabilità son dovuta restare a casa per tutti questi giorni, uscendo solo per urgenze e temendo che il corriere non mi trovasse in casa - MahiReviewed in India on January 8, 2016
