- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 1 May 2011To me the highlight of this season has to be the Clark/Lois relationship finally up and running after the false start in Season 8. Tom Welling and Erica Durance work wonderfully well together - their bantering, bickering "frienemies" relationship has always entertained and now we viewers begin to see Smallville's incarnation of the legendary couple on the verge of true love. From the rain-soaked embrace in "Rabid" to the tender moments in season finale "Salvation" the relationship moves at a thorough and beautiful pace. My lowlight is the Major Zod plot, I like Callum Blue as an actor (especially his cameo in "Grey's Anatomy") but as Zod he seems to pinball between trying to channel Terence Stamp - complete with Cockney accent - and almost bursting into tears every time he speaks. Also I didn't like the estrangement between Clark and Chloe this season, it just feels obvious that Chloe is being manoeuvred aside so Lois can come to the fore, I feel their friendship should have been respected a little more. Also look out for a hilarious return cameo by Michael McKean (Mr Annette O'Toole) as Perry White. Best episodes: Saviour, Metallo, Rabid, Echo, Crossfire, Kandor, Idol, Pandora, Disciple, Absolute Justice, Warrior, Persuasion, Checkmate, Sacrifice, Hostage & spectacular cliff-hanging Salvation.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 20 May 2010Smallville is back on top after this season. I have been watching it faithfully since season 5 and although no season is bad, there have been a couple which do not rate among the others. But this is one of the best.
This season sees the self centred fart in a trance (Clark Kent), starting to accept his destiny and becoming the hero we all know and love. We also have the romance of Clark and Lois which we've all been waiting for after 5 seasons.
However the highlight of the season is Zod who is a worthy replacement of Lex Luthor who left in season 7. Zod is what this season was all about and the highlight is that he's British (and he's a real one not just an American failing the accent).
The Seasons highlight was the finale which was the best the show has ever had and left the season with many cliffhangers.
Although if all you know of the DC universe is Smallville and the films the double episode in the middle of the series will not mean much too you.
Overall this season is one of the best the series has had. I can't decide whether this season or season 6 is the best I'll leave you to decide that for yourself. Bring On Season 10.

- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 26 December 2013I got so sick and tired of waiting for season 9 to appear on TV again, that I thought I might as well buy the complete season 9 DVD instead.
Glad I did to because I got to see more thanks to the added cut off scenes + no adverts to painfully sit through.
The package is strong too so I know the discs are secured for a very long time and their quality is fantastic on the HD TVs.
Even the sound has great quality and the volume doesn't change either so you don't need to keep the remote control nearby.
A good price, a great product, and a brilliant show. :-) - Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 4 January 2011After the disappointing finale of season 8, the ninth and penultimate season of the show sees it hit it's stride. Smallville has really become Metropolis post-S5 and Clark comes closer to becoming Superman than ever before. Comic book legend Geoff Johns scripts a two-parter this year (after the great 'Legion' from last year) which is one of the season's high points.
The best episodes of the season are: Salvation (the EPIC finale), Pandora (an incredible WHAT-IF? episode) and Absolute Justice (the aforementioned two-parter written featuring the JSA).
Although not quite reaching the heights of Seasons 2, 3 & 4, this is the first season in recent years that has come close to it's potential. - Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 17 July 2010After watching all the seasons of smallville and thats a lot of episodes!!! season 9 is by far the best season. Clark\Kal El is now the blur and is following his destiny to become the man of steel cleaning the streets of metropolis of crime and this season also sees the romance between clark and lois grow stronger. Calum Blue plays kal els nemesis zod and does a great job of it with trying to take over the world as your average super villian does. I wont spoil the finale but lets just say its one hell of an cliff hanger for season 10 so all i can say is role on september and season 10.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 6 December 2011If you have been following the Smallville series like myself then you will start to realise why certain thing start to happen in this series. It all makes sence at season 10.
I have enjoyed following the exploits of a young Clark Kent - who eventually becomes our hero Superman.
I now have 9 seasons of Smallville boxsets - I shall be purchasing no.10 shortly - Great storylines and a must for all followers of the series. Enjoy!

5.0 out of 5 starsA new mythology for Earth's greatest super-hero!
Having watched this series faithfully since it began over 10 years ago, I was pleasantly surprised when they announced following Season 8 that Tom Welling had signed a contract to star and help produce Smallville for another 2 seasons. While the eighth season had its high points such as Geoff John's excellent "Legion" episode, they seemed off-balance without Michael Rosenbaum (Lex Luthor) and some of the episodes were less than memorable. So while I rejoiced that the show had been given a "new lease on life" I wondered, "What will they do next?"
I needn't have worried: Season 9 exceeded all expectations and then some. For the first time since its early years, Smallville was breaking new ground: challenging and dramatic episodes coupled with the first major rewrite of the Superman canon since the 1940's. Smallville was always at its best when it was pushing the envelope, challenging our assumptions about this "strange visitor from another planet" and what he really might be capable of, so what better way than to bring an entire Kryptonian city to Earth and force "Kal-El" to deal with them on his own terms?
From the very beginnings of the Superman character to the classic 1978 Richard Donner film, Krypton had always been portrayed as a doomed paradise, its destruction a Greek tragedy of cosmic proportions. In the season-9 story arc we are shown a very different story: a planet of gifted people at war with themselves, their advanced civilization threatened by overreaching pride and arrogance, teetering on the edge of annihilation. This theme had been hinted at as far back as Season 2 when the Virgil Swann character (Christopher Reeve) was first introduced to help fill in the back-story of Clark's true origins, and served as the basis for several ground-breaking episodes in Seasons 3 thru 5, including the run-up to Pa Kent's untimely death and the revelation that squeaky-clean Clark Kent really did have a dark side, and a rather nasty one at that.
The younger Major Zod (Callum Blue) proved the perfect foil for our still-struggling young superhero; their battle in this season's finale is quite possibly the high point of the entire series, a well-earned payoff for the ambitious storyline that kept both tension and anticipation high, each episode building to this stunning climax. At the same time, the series paid homage to the great heroes of comics past by pairing the nascent Justice League (Clark, Chloe, Oliver, Martian Manhunter) with the "grizzled veterans" of their recent past, the Justice Society of America. Another Geoff John episode which became a two-hour TV movie, this finely-crafted tribute story challenges our young "super-friends" to embrace the true meaning of teamwork, loyalty and sacrifice. In particular, Michael Shanks (Stargate) as "Hawkman" proved a very popular and enduring character, appearing in several subsequent episodes, continuing to serve as a mentor for Clark and eventually sacrificing his own life to save Lois Lane (Erica Durance) in Season 10.
The overall tone was darker throughout the Season-9 episodes than in previous seasons, and some reviewers have cited this as a drawback. I respectfully disagree. The kids from Smallville High have long since grown up and are facing adult problems, struggling to pull their lives together. For me this grounded all the major characters in a more believable reality that allowed for truly dramatic episodes as opposed to the overwrought melodrama that sometimes over-powered these characters in seasons past. Another high point was the recurring theme that everyone has both good and bad within them, as demonstrated by Zod, Oliver, and particularly John Corbin ("Metallo", played by Brian Austin Green) when he confessed his love to Lois Lane. Erica Durance, who will remain the definitive "Lois" for many years to come, gave one of her finest performances in that scene, showing great empathy and honesty when she responded simply: "In a different lifetime, things might have been different."
The Blu-Ray edition has some quirks that I found annoying, particularly in the episode menu-bar that is far less responsive than it should be. Aside from that, the hi-def quality of the shows is outstanding, as is the cinematography in nearly every episode. If you own no other season of Smallville, this is the one you must have. I guarantee you hours of enjoyment, some truly enjoyable moments and more than a few tears.

5.0 out of 5 starsd'enfer!!
- Cliente AmazonReviewed in Spain on 20 September 2017

5.0 out of 5 stars

5.0 out of 5 starsSuperman at his best.
Darn, if this isn't one of the best series of all times. Tom Welling's portrayal of the farm boy come super hero is believable. Some goofy comic bits but that is to be expected. My faves "arrow" Justin Hartley keeps your attention. Timeless story line. Hours of viewing pleasure. Can't wait to watch it all over again. One person found this helpfulReport
