Dan Starkey reads an exclusive new audio adventure for the Twelfth Doctor, as played on TV by Peter Capaldi.

The Doctor arrives on the uninhabited planetoid Quish, famous for having the biggest natural amphitheatre in the galaxy. The Blitzats Jazz Quartet are playing, but shortly afterwards the planetoid implodes. Everywhere they play they leave a trail of destruction in their wake – someone dies; a city is wiped out; an entire planet vanishes... But why - and how? The Doctor realises that the answer lies close to home.

Another great original audiobook story. Dan Starkey's narrating is great! I highly recommended buying this audiobook if you love Doctor who.

A new Doctor Who talking book from the bbc. Telling an all new story for the Twelfth Doctor - on his own with no established companion - which hasn't appeared in any other format before.

It runs for seventy mins [approx.] and is complete on a single cd. The only breaks in what is basically one long episode are the usual cd chapter ones.

Minimal sleeve notes give copyright details and advertise other audios.

The story is read by Dan Starkey. Who played Sontaran Strax on the tv show. As with all of this range, the reader does the narration and all the voices. Dan Starkey did a good job on another of these earlier this year, and does the same once again. Being good to listen to, and good at doing different voices. His accent for the Doctor does seem a little strong at first, but you quickly get used to it.

The story sees the Doctor visit a planet which has the biggest amphitheatre in the galaxy. Where alien group the Blitzats Jazz quartet are playing. Shortly after their performance, the planet explodes. The Doctor meets would be journalist Tommy Loco who has been following the group around the galaxy. Because this isn't the first place where they've played that this has happened to.

Why are the planets being destroyed? And what do the group have to do with it? The answers might sit closer to home than suspected...

As with all of this range, it's not something that can do anything to change continuity. Just be a good stand alone story. And it succeeds in doing that. It tries very hard to make the aliens really unusual and alien, but it does thankfully never go far into making them comedic. So the tone is just about right.

Stories like these tend to set up things for the first thing and leave you intrigued to find out what's really going on. In the middle there will usually be lots of runaround. And then the final third will resolve things. The middle of this has a bit too much runaround to little effect. But the final third does manage to get beyond this nicely. Taking the plot up to a different level with some good developments. And making a few good moments of emotional impact as well. It also does this with temporary companion for the story Tommy, who has decent motivation and a couple of good defining moments which make him work as a character.

Nothing special, but a good listen all in all, as these should be. Worth four stars.
