Jirel of Joiry (Golden Age Masterworks) Paperback – 4 April 2019
Purchase options and add-ons
With her red hair flowing, her yellow eyes glinting like embers, and her face streaked with blood, Jirel is strong, fearless, and driven by honor. The fierce, proud, and relentless commander of warriors, standing tall above her enemies and simmering with rage, Jirel bids farewell to the world of treacherous men and walks through a forbidden door into Hell itself in pursuit of freedom, justice, and revenge.
These are the classic tales of blood and honor that catapulted C.L. Moore into the legendary ranks of such acclaimed writers as Robert E. Howard and Edgar Rice Burroughs in the golden age of sword and sorcery. First published in the magazine Weird Tales in the 1930s, Moore's fantastic medieval adventures are heightened by a savage, romantic vision that helped define the genre, earning her recognition as a Grand Master for lifetime achievement by the World Fantasy Convention.

About the Author
C.L. Moore (1911 - 1987)
Catherine Lucille Moore was born in Indianapolis in 1911. Prolonged illness when young meant she spent much of her time as a child reading the fantastic tales of the day, a background that no doubt spurred her on to become a writer of science fiction and fantasy herself. Moore made her first professional sale toWeird Tales while still in her early 20's: the planetary romance 'Shambleau', which introduced one of her best-known heroes Northwest Smith. She went on to produce a highly respected body of work, initially solo forWeird Tales and then, in collaboration with her husband, fellow SF writer Henry Kuttner, whom she married in 1940, for John W. Campbell'sAstoundingScience Fiction. Moore was one of the first women to rise to prominence in the male-dominated world of early SF, and paved the way for others to follow in her footsteps. Moore ceased to write fiction after Kuttner's death in 1958, concentrating instead on writing for television. She died in April 1987 after a long battle with Alzheimer's Disease.

- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 29 March 2021Format: PaperbackVerified PurchaseLoved this book, I've read most of the stories before in anthologies before, but they are still rousing fantasy stories spiced with horror! Jirel is the female conan of the pulp era, and is not to be messed with. I give 5 stars for the stories, though had I not been familiar with the character already, I'm not sure the cover would have enticed me to buy. (Nothing wrong with the workmanship of the cover, just that Pulp era work usually bring to mind the art of frazetta or Adams, this cover looks a little generic)
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 17 February 2017These stories remind me of Conan, but with a little more magic thrown in. I normally read much longer books, but it is a nice change when i find a short story collection like this one, and they are all related an in order, so whilst there are 6 (or perhaps 5?) short stories they do form one continuous story. Moore concentrates his efforts on Jirel, and you feel as though you get to know her character more and more as you read on. These stories dont get bogged down being over-descriptive as some tend to do, and things never slow down with fast paced magical adventures all the way through the book. This may be too short and uninvolved for some readers, but if like me, you sometimes want a break from the 1000 page multi part epics that many of the fantasy genre are, then this is spot on.

5.0 out of 5 starsGreat collection keeps classic stories alive.
Format: PaperbackVerified PurchaseContrary to what I expected, this includes all six Jirel of Joiry stories. The impression I got online was only one out-of-print collection did that, and that all others excluded the story C.L. Moore co-wrote with her then husband-to-be. - AbhiReviewed in India on 4 March 2023
4.0 out of 5 starsAn excellent collection of nightmarish horror stories and a feisty heroine
Format: PaperbackVerified PurchaseCatherine Lucille Moore was one of the earliest and significant writers of science fiction and fantasy. She wrote stories primarily for the Weird Tales pulp magazine in the 1930's which also published stories by other writers like HP Lovecraft, Robert E Howard, Clark Ashton Smith, Seabury Quinn and many others.
The Golden Age Masterworks " Jirel of Joiry" collects all the 6 fantasy horror stories written by Moore featuring the flame-haired heroine Jirel. The rule of Joiry castle, warmonger, a fighter with a fiery temper and an awesome character.
The series of stories concerns Jirel adventuring in nightmarish lands either in pursuit of someone or in search of an artifact. If you prefer stories which have creepy imagination and dark themes, I highly recommend this collection. - Random nonsenseReviewed in the United States on 21 October 2019
5.0 out of 5 starsTake the time and read this party of SF/Fantasy history.
Enjoyable read and more interesting in that it came from one of fantasy fiction's first female writers about one of the first female characters. Definitely recommend it. - CandyReviewed in Australia on 18 January 2025
