Between1975 and 1979, VWCV addressed the needs ofdeveloping markets by creating theVolkswagen EA489 Basistransporter, a simple, front-wheel-drive light truck powered by anair-cooled engine. This model featured arudimentary chassis and minimal bodywork usingflat sheet metal, designed for cost-effective assembly.

Manufactured assemi-knocked down (SKD) kits, the Basistransporter could beassembled locally in countries likeMexico (as the Hormiga), the Philippines, Nigeria, Indonesia, and Turkey.
