In themid 1990's, HDD manufacturers hoped to maximize the space on a round medium and therefore moved fromCAV toZ-CAV, otherwise known asZone CAV.
Z-CAV turns a disk into multiple zones just like CAV andP-CAV with each break containing thousands of tracks, all of which depends on the zone's location withing the disc.
The outer tracks usually have more sectors than the inner tracks and can hold more data as well.
