This article takes the issue of transfers of Polish literature literally-as the physical transfer of writers' archives from place to place, to archives located in different countries and on different continents. Aleksander Wat's legacy is treated as a synecdoche of the fate of the archives of other émigré writers, such as Czesław Miłosz, Zbigniew Herbert or Witold Gombrowicz. These considerations are complemented by the presentation of archival typescripts and manuscripts, as well as a never-published transcript of a conversation between Ola and Andrzej Wat, the then heirs to the legacy of the author of Mój wiek [My Age], and the stakeholders of institutions such as the Museum of Literature in Warsaw, the Ossolineum Library in Wrocław or the Polish Library in Paris (Jacek Trznadel, Krzysztof Rutkowski and Marek Prokop, among others), who debated in the 1980s about the future of the archive. The juxtaposition between the conversation, held under specific political conditions, and the further fate of the archive is interesting. This very specific issue then becomes a trigger for a more general reflection on the history of Polish archives-doomed to these transfers-in a situation of permanent historical uncertainty. It seems that the fate of our archives reflects the uncertainty of the fate of the entire nation.

The article, titled "The Influential Worlds in the Development of the Artwork: History of Society, History of Art, History of the Artist," aims to introduce a comprehensive model for the developmental criticism of an artwork.

The paper achieves this by adopting a psychoanalytic perspective based on Sigmund Freud's theory of the unconscious. The authors propose that the creative process is the product of the artist's simultaneous accumulation of and interaction with three distinct histories:

The History of the Community/Society: This history shapes the collective conscious and collective unconscious of the artist. Its influence is analyzed using concepts such as Carl Jung's collective unconscious and archetypes, and Georg Lukács's theory of social consciousness (false consciousness and self-consciousness).

The History of Art: This dimension reveals itself through intertextual readings and represents the artist's conscious adaptation or unconscious absorption of elements and styles from past artistic traditions. This influence is examined using Gérard Genette's theory of Transtextuality (Intertextuality and Hypertextuality) and Harold Bloom's theory of the Anxiety of Influence.

The Artist's Personal History: This history is responsible for forming the artist's individual conscious and subconscious, playing a crucial role in establishing the "individuality" of the work. The paper suggests that this personal influence can be investigated by studying the artist's personal life (especially childhood), private writings, and non-artistic activities.

By considering how each of these three histories influences the work through both the conscious and unconscious mind of the artist, the article provides a detailed, structured framework for understanding the developmental process of art.

Presentation delivered via webinar to an online and local audience in Perth, Western Australia hosted by the Dante Alighieri Society of Western Australia. Presentation available via this link. My contribution to this celebration of Dante and his Comedy and what they mean to contemporary Australia grows out of my experience of teaching Dante at university in recent years. A bold, some said 'folle', experiment saw me teach the whole Divine Comedy in a single semester, which in Australian universities these days has been whittled down to ten weeks. Student response was positive in so many ways. Grasping the outline of Dante's whole journey and vision allows the reader to approach several troubling details in an authentic way and to make the story their own.

As has often been remarked, writing was vital in Cicero’s ambitious project of self-fashioning and the canonization of his oratory. Through writing, Cicero was able to overcome the problems associated with his novitas and to transform his oratory into a paradigm by constructing texts as replacements of his embodied presence. This paper complicates constructionist approaches towards Cicero’s self-fashioning by reflecting on Cicero’s self-citing from his poetic texts in his theological trilogy. What makes citational practices compelling is how they affect the citing agent’s subjectivity through dynamic processes of assimilation and distancing triggered by the replication. Methodologically, the complexity of these processes unsettles the possibility of approaching the citational episode as the expression of a single, self-contained individual.
Matters get even more complicated when agents like Cicero cite themselves through other figures and include a variety of remarks and observations along with their citation (see Balbus in the De natura deorum and Quintus in the De divinatione). My analysis reveals that each bit of text cut out from one work and inlaid into another contains manifold links to the original context, to other textual bits, to Cicero’s past and present, to other agents, and to the new text, simultaneously. What this means from a subjective point of view is that our textual Cicero does not emerge as a unitary identity but as a key node of transactions constituted by multiple realities and subjectivities. This multiplicity frustrates any attempt to recompose Cicero and his existence into a neat puzzle; however, self-citing creates a space where the subjectivities constituted by their relationship with the citation come to be condensed into textual substances. Ultimately, Cicero’s texts are less a straightforward replacement of his embodied presence than an emotionally dense “remnant” of his attempts to salvage a world going under.

This article, after establishing the importance of James Joyce in the early career of Jack Kerouac, explores the influence of Joyce’s water-centric ecopoetic on Kerouac’s own after 1949, the year of his “Rain and Rivers” notebook. It will show through questions of topography and toponymy how Kerouac pushes territorial and linguistic frontiers via the encounters of numerous rivers, bearing many names in different languages, whose accretive accumulation will eventually reach the depths of the “Sea,” the title of the poem at the end of Big Sur, echoing the circular structure of Joyce’s Finnegans Wake. It will also attempt to show how Kerouac creates his own flood myth, liquifying, after Joyce, the English language through the exploration of epiphanic stream of consciousness writing and complex plurilingual strategies. Excerpts from Kerouac’s exploratory and experimental water writing will be examined through an intertextual reading of Joyce’s A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man, Ulysses and Finnegans Wake.

This article aims to provide a general overview of the material characteristics of
the manuscripts constituting Fernando Pessoa’s unpublished work The Duke of
Parma and the typology of autograph interventions that can be observed. Analysis
of the piece’s genesis will reveal valuable information on Pessoa’s creative modus
operandi, while also raising important questions in terms of editorial treatment,
given, for example, the frequent presence of alternative variants on which the
author never made a definitive decision, or ambiguous authorial indications
concerning the ordering of the textual content. Thus, a critical-genetic reflection
on the manuscripts of this unpublished project represents a crucial stage in the
future development of editorial and critical work on the tragedy.

Manuel Puig.

CIAC invites submissions for the second International Creation Processes Conference, to be held on December 4th and 5th, in Faro, at the University of Algarve, under the theme "Interactions between research and creation".

The CIAC International Creation Processes Conference is an opportunity to bring together artists and researchers to reflect on Creation Processes across the transversality of practices, materialities, procedures, methods, and languages that constitute up this expanding field of study.

CIAC has been intensifying its research and initiatives in the area of Creation Processes, especially since the beginning of its partnership with the Creation Processes Research Group at PUC-SP (2019), an institution with more than 30 years of experience dedicated to research in this field. Results of this Portugal-Brazil partnership include not only the conference but also: the CIAC Creation Processes Collection (2022), the Master’s in Creation Processes at the University of Algarve (2023), and the Postgraduate Program in Creation Processes at PUC-SP (2025).

Reflecting on the Interactions between research and creation becomes increasingly necessary when theory places itself at the intersection between knowledge emerging from practice and the desire to propose new knowledge from that foundation.

In recent years, several higher education programs have been created to host projects at the intersection of research and creation, such as the PhD in Digital Media-Art (UAlg/UAb), the Master’s in Creation Processes (UAlg), and the Postgraduate Program in Creation Processes (PUC-SP), among other partner programs of this conference.

Creation, a concept that long ago escaped the boundaries of the artistic field and assumed a central role in all sectors of contemporary life, is vital for artists – though not only for them – and can contribute to current and sensitive investigations that allow us to act better in and upon the world. To create and to offer others the possibility to create is certainly one of the ways of resisting the automatisms of gesture and thought that mark our society.

Investigating ways of de-automating our gestures and thoughts, by opening and discussing Creation Processes in different areas, is a course of action that brings ethics and aesthetics closer together within creation and research practices.
In this regard, universities play a fundamental role by fostering and advancing these intersections and the projects that emerge from this desire for confluence, also within the academic space.

Our second edition of the Conference (2025) seeks to broaden these and other discussions and therefore invites researchers, artists, and creators in general to submit paper proposals addressing "Interactions between research and creation", around (but not limited to) the following subtopics:

• Theories of artistic creation and their poetics
• Materialities and procedures of artistic creation
• Reception, co-creation, interactivity, and shared creations
• Culture, memory, and archives of creation
• Research methodologies in creation processes
• Poetics of research
• Ethics and politics of creation
• Decolonial and anti-racist practices of creation and research
• Creation, representativity, and repair
• Sustainability and ecologies of creation
• Literacy, educational practices, and creation processes
• Creation processes and AI tools
• Digital, generative poetics and hacker practices
• Practices of artivism and digital artivism
• Contributions of creation processes to climate challenges
• Feminism, gender, and intersectionality in creation processes

Abstracts must be between 200 and 300 words and submitted through the Submission Form by October 5th, via the Conference website.

The Conference also welcomes submissions for Thematic Panels (up to 5 presenters); Archive Exhibitions (as part of a paper or panel); and Workshop Proposals.

The anarchistic and apocalyptic vein in Canadian cinema, and even in the larger context of Canadian art in general, takes a particular turn with the films of David Cronenberg. Such early Cronenberg films as Shivers (1975) and Rabid (1977) betray an almost prurient desire for the destruction of bourgeois social harmony and the annihilation of patriarchal social relations in the context of apocalypse. Even Cronenberg's earliest experimental films such as Stereo (1969) and Crimes of the Future (1970) make use of post-apocalyptic settings in building towards his more explicitly apocalyptic early commercial films to explore what might be identified as specifically anarchist social considerations. However, while the themes of anarchism and apocalypse permeate almost all of Cronenberg's works, these are almost universally overlooked in favour of traditional analyses of his 'Canadian weirdness' or his unique brand of body horror. This article looks back to the origins of Cronenberg's avant-garde anarchist-apocalyptic sensibilities to begin to recover their recognition in scholarship.

This article aims to use the approach of Genetic Translation Studies to make the work of literary translators visible. Drawing on two case studies on the French translations of novels by the Italian author Antonio Tabucchi, I show how translation archives can help retrace different phases of the translation process. The private archives of translators Lise Chapuis and Bernard Comment include annotated typescripts, notebooks and sheet notes. Analyzing them allows us to glimpse hidden aspects of the translation process that are related to how choices evolve to fit with a precise translation strategy, as well as the translator's personal understanding and interpretation of a narrative.

This essay explores the metaphysical and philosophical implications of the Pythagorean discovery of irrational numbers, attributed to the figure of Hippasus. Moving beyond a purely historical or mathematical account, it argues that the crisis provoked by the square root of two-the "line across the right angle"-did not destroy the Pythagorean concept of cosmic harmony but rather revealed its true, dynamic nature. By framing the irrational not as a flaw but as a necessary tension within order, the essay reinterprets this moment as the first profound encounter with the incommensurable in Western thought. It examines how this revelation forced innovations in mathematics, fractured the scientific imagination, and provided a foundation for Platonic dualism. Ultimately, this study posits that Hippasus's exile represents an eternal epistemological condition: the moment consciousness confronts an irreducible mystery at the heart of reality, transforming wonder from a state of ignorance into a mode of attentive participation in a cosmos that forever exceeds full comprehension.

With the advent of digital technology, authorial philology faces new challenges. The “intangible papers”, made of bytes rather than paper, are the result of a radical shift in the way literature is written and experienced. And they compel archivists and philologists to rethink their methods and practices. The proceedings of the international conference The Intangible Papers. Authorial Philology and Born-Digital Texts (Pavia, 11-13 December 2023) seek to illustrate this ongoing transformation. Experts and scholars from universities and research centres share their insights and experiences on the acquisition, preservation, and enhancement of born-digital materials. With the awareness that only collaboration between archival science, computer science, and philology can ensure the longevity and accessibility of a cultural legacy essential to the future of our collective memory.

The edition will be published by Oxford University Press in two large hardback volumes -one with the emended text, the other with the 'apparatus'. There will also be an online version. It will keep to the number of pages (628) and the number of lines per page (36) in the first edition in order to coincide for 99.5% of the text with the traditional form of references in annotations and critical commentaries. As well as making this announcement in this special Finnegans Wake issue of the Dublin James Joyce Journal, we are also providing a sample of our research: of the textual errors and cruxes we have identified so far from the first 6 pages (3-9), and, more importantly, examples of the justificatory apparatus that will explain our choices. This is intended to provoke a discussion about methodology, and about whether or how to fine-tune the basic principles that we have developed. It is also intended to introduce new readers to the issues at play in working with Joyce's manuscripts with a view to identifying errors. We thus wish to encourage feedback from experts, but also from readers who might be new to this material and who are interested in the genesis of these textual issues. We are planning to publish, as our work unfolds over the next three years, a 'work in progress' blog revealing some of the trickier textual issues that arise where we hope also to prompt, just as in this essay, responses to our scholarship. This article analyzes two previously unstudied blogs by the poet, prose writer, and digital creator Tomasz Pułka. Treating the blog as an autobiographical genre, the article asks how the blog challenges the generic stability of entries which may be classified as literary texts. Digital philology and genetic criticism are employed to analyze Pułka’s works. Two models of blogging that were practiced by Pułka from 2008 to 2009 are discussed: the first is the notebook mode and the second is the intermedial model. The undertaken analysis gives rise to a tentative history of Pułka’s creative process and highlights the connections between the poetics of the blog, conditioned by the possibilities and limitations of Blogger.com, and the poetics of poetic texts acknowledged by literary criticism.

The subject of the article is the Kommissionen til Bevaring af danske Forfatteres Manuskripter og Breve (the Commission for the Preservation of Manuscripts and Letters by Danish Authors), which was set up in 1910. The article shows that this now completely forgotten commission played a significant role in the early phase of a major and fundamental, but little examined, historical development in Denmark in the 20th century, a period when both writers and archival institutions became increasingly aware of the need to preserve so-called ‘literary remains’ (manuscripts, drafts, letters, diaries etc.) for posterity and to establish archives of contemporary writers. The article examines the historical and institutional background of the commission’s work, including its terms of reference, working method, public action, stages of development – and dissolution. The article also maps the constant negotiation that was clearly in question, as it was far from self-evident that letters and manuscripts would be preserved. The work of the commission resulted in several public controversies, inter-institutional rivalries and discord within the walls of the individual archival institutions. In conclusion, the article shows how the commission’s work became a concrete link between, on the one hand, the incorporation of the Collin Manuscript Collection in 1905 and, on the other, the establishment of the Georg Brandes Archive in 1912.
The article, which is based on a large amount of – for the most part – previously unused source material, is a contribution to 20th-century Danish library, archival and literary history in terms of both subject matter and methodology. In terms of the latter, the article concludes not only that archives can provide source material, such as liter-ary studies, but also that they can become an object of analysis in their own right: the studies of individual archives’ provenance, structure, discarded material, supplements etc. can be mapped to varying degrees, and they can potentially provide an insight into mechanisms in the literary field.

The unpublished story in the archive – which has no title, is not dated, and was eventually abandoned as a composition – comprises seventeen closely typed pages that were revised and annotated on more than one occasion (in red and blue ink). When was it written? Why was it abandoned? This study attempts to answer these questions by assessing a range of evidence, beginning with the identification of textual clues to the date of composition. The draft story’s thematic relationship to the stories of Vermilion Sands is then considered, particularly its relationship to ‘The Screen Game’, a story with which it has much in common. Finally, and rewardingly, the physical evidence of the document itself is assessed, the distinctive paper on which the story was typed.

Young author Cham S. Mansour has, and for a platform where literary composition is better received, refined upon one of her academic essays, literary critique upon Edgar Allan Poe's "The Philosophy of Composition" and argumentative against the logic very much wanting in the method it tells of. This is not in empty repudiation of a point impertinent to the literature of today: Poe's essay tells of the arithmetic and strategy upon which his acclaimed "The Raven" was established ― the arithmetic in the method being upon closer inspection of quite a conflicting nature with conventional poetic composition, which has for long posed question as to whether the poem was at all thus conceived.

The men met twice in Dickens’ suite at the hotel, Poe in his neat but worn black suit, a portrait of gentile poverty, Dickens draped in fine clothes and jewellery for the first meeting, and in his dressing gown for the second. The meetings appear to have been scholarly and impersonal, although Dickens was travelling with a portrait of his children and Grip, and it is likely that he showed this to Poe given the latter’s enthusiasm for the ‘Grip’ of Barnaby Rudge. They discussed contemporary English and American authors, literary history, and composition, as well as the need for workable international copyright legislation. Poe is not mentioned in American Notes, and the author who made the greatest impression on Dickens during the visit was Washington Irving, who Dickens described as ‘my dear friend.’ But then, Irving was a literary giant, whereas Poe was, by Dickens’ standards, a nobody.

There is a vast literature showing that author-translator relationships are often fraught with
tensions which undermine trust between the two parties (Anokhina 2017; Hersant, 2017,
2020). These tensions are hardly detectable from the sole comparison of source and target texts
but are likely to be revealed in archival material such as editorial correspondence or revised
translator’s typescripts and galley proofs. The examination of archival material makes it possible
to observe how trust between translator and author develops and deepens, but also how it can be
jeopardized when other intermediaries come into play. This paper focuses on documents taken
from the Lilly Library at the University of Indiana Bloomington. Both epitextual sources (such
as correspondence with publishers and authors) and genetic sources (such as translators’
manuscripts and notebooks) pertaining to translators William Weaver (1923-2012) and
Barbara Wright (1915-2009) are examined, with a view to better understand the complex
interplay of trust and mistrust that takes place in translation collaborations.

This article addresses some of the issues relevant to audiovisual retranslation with a focus on film redubs, a vast though still largely underexplored phenomenon that merits specific investigation. Redubbing is an umbrella term which encompasses translation and adaptation practices ranging from mere reacting of a previously translated dubbing script, to slight revision, to completely new translating (Chaume 2007; Zanotti 2015). The present contribution aims to illustrate what archival resources are available for scholars wishing to pursue research on film retranslation and the specific problems that arise in dealing with redubs when considered from a historical and archival perspective. A case study is presented, focusing on For Whom the Bell Tolls (1943), a classic Hollywood romance-at-war tale which was dubbed at least three times for distribution in Italy.

Drawing on a variety of archival sources, this paper aims to explore the dissonant and conflicting narratives that emerge from the surviving drafts of the Italian translation of Blooms of Dublin, a musical adaptation of James Joyce's Ulysses by Anthony Burgess (1986). I will investigate the genesis of this translation and the way it unfolds in the rich archival records held at the Anthony Burgess Foundation Archives, the Harry Ransom Center, and the Archives of Teatro Verdi in Trieste. By examining the surviving archival traces of this collaborative venture-an unfinished translation project that can be detected only in the archive-, the study aims not only to reconstruct the working methods that were adopted for this translation project, but also to lay the groundwork for further explorations into Burgess's approach to translation. In exploring the conflicting narratives that emerge in and out of the archive, this paper will attempt to provide some new insights into the dynamics that underlie collaborative (self-)translation (Hersant

Starting from "Varie Avvertenze Utili, e necessarie agli Amatori de' buoni libri" (1756) by Gaetano Volpi, and drawing on the contributions of Kristian Jensen ("Revolution and the Antiquarian Book: Reshaping the Past, 1780-1815") and David McKitterick ("Print, Manuscript and the Search for Order, 1450-1830" and "The Invention of Rare Books: Private Interest and Public Memory, 1600-1840"), up to the most recent monographs "The Economics of the Manuscript and Rare Book Trade, ca. 1890-1939" and "The Pre-Modern Manuscript Trade and Its Consequences, ca. 1890-1945", it is
possible to trace how specific criteria for collecting manuscripts and early printed books emerged between the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries.

This paper aims to revisit these reflections in order to address the following question: is it possible to identify certain characteristics that allowed manuscripts to continue to be collected, despite the advent of print?

In particular, the study will focus on the case of the personal library of Carlo Ludovico of Bourbon, assembled during his Duchy of Lucca (1824-1847) with the assistance of librarian Pietro Pera, who, in his address "Intorno all'origine, progresso ed utilità della Reale Biblioteca Palatina di Lucca", outlines the selection criteria for the volumes.

A comparison between the manuscript catalogue and the incunabula catalogue of this collection – now preserved in the Biblioteca Palatina in Parma – may offer further insights into whether these two bibliographic categories were viewed as competing or complementary within a fully
nineteenth-century collection.

The Role of Language in Shaping Literary Identity is a crucial topic of great interest among researchers and critics. It has occupied the foreground of academic study. With respect to modern English literature, the function of language is not merely confined to communication; it plays a vital role in shaping the identity of both the author and the text. Relevantly, language influences the way the writers draw character sketches in their literary works and how they tackle themes and narrative structures. The main objective of this research is to explore how language acts as a tool of expression to shape literary identity in the works of modern English literature. To relieve the task of academic research, some representative literary texts have been selectively chosen. Bearing in mind that some areas of research still need to be brought into the scope of literary discussion, the study focuses on comparing the works of different authors from a diverse range of backgrounds, genres, and cultural contexts within the English-speaking world in the modern times. The interactive relationship between language and literary identity is investigated; the study seeks to trace how language reflects and constructs the identities of writers and their narratives in the context of modernity. The research attempts an outline of literature review, illuminating the topic perspectives and highlighting the role of language in shaping literary identity. The study also adopts an analytical, comparative approach, supported with authenticated references and insights: selected texts are linguistically, contextually and thematically analyzed. The conclusion draws lines together, providing a deeper understanding of the intersection between language, identity, and literature in the contemporary world of English literature.

Looking into the textual genesis of Anna Karenina’s concluding part, the paper seeks to contextualize, in political and biographical terms, Tolstoy’s rebuke of Russian public enthusiasm that erupted in 1876 as the anti-Ottoman Slavic insurgency and outright war unfolded in the Balkans. Much of the argument focuses on what, and why, the novel’s polemical tone shares with contemporary dissenting voices of a few high-positioned, aristocratic officials in St. Petersburg whose wariness about the Russian Empire’s Pan-Slavist expansionism stemmed from a particular understanding of empirehood rather than moral, religious, or philosophical considerations.
