On this day in football history

1894Billy Meredith made his League debut for Manchester City against Newcastle United in a Second Division match. One of the all-time greats his career lasted for 30 years and he played for both Manchester clubs, ending as he began with City (Manchester City were known as Ardwick). He won FA Cup medals with both clubs, played 51 times for Wales and is reported to have played in over 800 first class matches scoring over 200 goals. He died in 1958 at the age of 81.
1916The main stand of Harlepool United's ground was severely damaged when it was bombed by a German Zeppelin. Between the Wars the club tried to get compensation from the German Government but were unsuccessful. Ironically the ground was bombed again during the Second World War.
1920With their ground under suspension, Crystal Palace played Exeter City in League Division Three at Southampton.
1937When Guildford beat Reading 1-0 in the FA Cup First Round their star player was goalkeeper Willie Robb, who was in his first season in non-League football after 25 years in top-class soccer. He made his debut with Birmingham City and then played for Rangers and Hibernian before signing for Aldershot. Between 1932, when the 'Shots came into the Football League and 1937 he played 176 Third Division South matches for them. During the whole of his career he appeared in 571 peacetime League games and won two Scottish caps in 1926 and 1928.
1948Colchester United's record attendance of 19,072 was achieved when they met Reading in the FA Cup.
1965Wolverhampton Wanderers beat Portsmouth 8-2 in League Division Two and Brighton and Hove Albion beat Southend United 9-1 in League Division Three.
1972The term "amateur" is dropped by the FA in relation to players being paid or unpaid.
1990Sixteen year old Ryan Giggs is offered a five year contract by Manchester United.
2006Ulster Bank marked the first anniversary of the death of George Best by issuing a million £5 notes in honour of Northern Ireland’s greatest-ever player.
