Lord Darius Crowley was once aGilnean nobleman. A pro-Alliance figure, he dissented with KingGenn Greymane's decision to separate his people with theGreymane Wall. Crowley led theNorthgate Rebellion that caused a civil war inGilneas, during which he was imprisoned. When Gilneas was attacked byworgen, he was freed and became a worgen himself. Both Crowley and Greymane reconciled and joined forces against the threats Gilneas faced. He now leads theGilneas Liberation Front which fights against the Forsaken along with theBloodfang Pack and the7th Legion. When theBurning Legion returned to assault Azeroth, Darius and his daughterLorna joined Genn on theSkyfire as part of his army forces.
Biography[]
Lord of His Pack[]

At the time of theSecond War, Lord Crowley was a nobleman whose lands and people were outside of the border that would later be known as theGreymane Wall. He owned the towns ofPyrewood Village andAmbermill. Despite being young and new to the Gilnean council of Lords, his humanistic and charismatic qualities made him loved by the Gilnean people and earned him the respect and friendship of the king of Gilneas,Genn Greymane. Crowley was one of the nobles that accompanied Greymane toCapital City to hear ofStormwind's fall andAnduin Lothar's warning about the invadingOrcish Horde. Crowley was sympathetic to the Alliance's plight and advised Greymane to send aid to the newly-formedAlliance. Greymane agreed out of self-serving reasons but offered only token support.[1]
Years later, Gilneas seceded from the Alliance following the departure ofQuel'Thalas, who stated that the humans' poor leadership had led to the burning of their forests during the Second War,[2] alongside theliberation of the orcs frominternment camps byThrall. When Genn started the construction of theGreymane Wall, a massive barrier that walled off his lands from the rest of Gilneas, Crowley opposed the King's decision to abandon his people. In retaliation for Greymane's decision to abandon the Alliance, it was Crowley that was responsible for sending theGilneas Brigade toJaina Proudmoore during theThird War.[1]
The King had tried to reason with Crowley, to make it clear that this wall was the way forward, and to explain why assisting the Alliance was so wrong. But Crowley refused, and insisted that he was doing what was best for the future of Gilneas, that he would end the King's "tyranny", and started a rebellion against Greymane, gathering like-minded Gilneans including his daughterLorna andTobias Mistmantle in forming theNorthgate rebellion. The resulting civil war weakened the kingdom and split the populace into two groups, "royalist" and "rebel", labels that continued to spark fights years after the event ended. He was eventually arrested on the grounds of treason and held atStoneward Prison.

Cataclysm[]

Darius Crowley as a human.
Shortly before the attack on Gilneas City, Genn was thinking about granting Crowley amnesty.[3]

Darius Crowley inCurse of the Worgen Issue 5, standing withHalford Ramsey and aFeral Worgen.
When the capital of Gilneas was attacked by feralworgen, Crowley was released by Gilneanadventurers and convinced to give aid to Greymane, who had ordered the evacuation of Gilneas. When he and his released men regrouped, he gave them a speech of a union against the worgen. In order to divert the worgen's attention from the fleeing citizens, Crowley led a group of brave Gilneans to stand against them atLight's Dawn Cathedral. Crowley and his followers were overwhelmed, andbecame worgen themselves.[4]
WhenBelysra tookHalford Ramsey toTal'doren, he encountered Darius Crowley, one of many Gilneans that Belysra and her night elves had been trying to help with their worgen affliction. A Loyalist, Halford still thought of Darius as a rebel and a traitor and lunged at him but the fight was broken up by Belysra who reminded them that the past didn't matter anymore and that they both needed to put it behind them in order to preserve the future of Gilneas. Both agreed to put the past behind them and work together to capture feral worgen in the woods of theBlackwald and make them sane again and regain their humanity.[5]
He worked with the adventurer to retrieve the stolenScythe of Elune from the hands of the Forsaken. He was worried of how Lorna would react to the news that he had the curse, but she was fine with it (considering that she had thought he had been killed instead). As theForsaken invasion went on,Genn Greymane and Lord Godfrey traveled toTal'doren to ask Crowley to help unite Gilneas against theForsaken. Due toLord Godfrey's prejudices towards the worgen, Darius was hesitant to accept. Greymane tells Darius that he is asking as an equal and after revealing that he too had succumbed to theWorgen curse, Darius agreed to join forces.[6]
Halford Ramsey along with Lord Crowley and his Gilnean worgen followedBelrysa Starbreeze in confrontingAlpha Prime atTal'doren. Belrysa attempted to use theScythe of Elune to seal away Alpha Prime and hisWolf Cult beneathDaral'nir in theEmerald Dream, but before she could do so, aForsakendark ranger shot her in the arm. This caused her to drop theScythe of Elune, and Alpha Prime signaled for the army of Forsaken to surround them. Alpha Prime took possession of the scythe, but just as he was about to finish Belysra off with it, thespirit wolf of Belysra's old lover —Arvell — killed Alpha Prime. With the death of their leader, the Wolf Cult scattered; leaving the Forsaken without their lupine allies and open to attack from the night elves and Gilneans. Shortly afterwards he, Halford and other Gilneans witnessed King Genn Greymane's confession of being afflicted with theworgen curse to his subjects and the Gilnean people's acceptance of him.[5]
Darius later participated in
[1-30] The Battle for Gilneas City with Genn and though they were successful in retaking the city, the Forsaken's Horde reinforcements and intent on using theForsaken Blight forced the Gilneans to flee and seek sanctuary inDarnassus. Before the worgen left, he was present at Liam's funeral inAderic's Repose and in Keel Harbor he led the organization of defenses against the invading Horde. While most of the worgen left, he and his daughter remained.

Gilneas Liberation Front[]

Darius Crowley in Gilneas.
With Gilneas now in enemy hands following theForsaken invasion, Lord Crowley led theGilneas Liberation Front against theForsaken inSilverpine Forest. With theBloodfang pack and theHillsbrad Worgen bolstering their numbers, and with help from the7th Legion, who used a submarine to pass through enemy lines, theAlliance gained the upper hand in Gilneas. However, agents of the Horde ended up destroying some of the reinforcements and enabled the Forsaken to resurrect Lord Godfrey as one of their own,[7] a fact that none of the Gilneans were aware of.
With Godfrey's help the Forsaken successfully captured Darius's daughterLorna.[8] Crowley led the Alliance's final push intoSilverpine Forest.Sylvanas Windrunner herself rode out to meet with Darius at the shatteredGreymane Wall and gave him two choices - the surrender of the Gilneas Liberation Front, or Lorna's death and resurrection as one of the Forsaken. Without a moment of hesitation, Darius agreed to surrender the Gilneas City in order to protect his daughter.[9] Sylvanas allowed them to retreat to Gilneas,[10] which was still contested between the Alliance and the Horde.
Legion[]

Darius and Tess present for the award ceremony of the player character.
Following theBattle for the Broken Shore, Darius and his daughter Lorna joinedGenn Greymane on theSkyfire. He is seen standing next toGilnean Footmen.
TheGilneas Brigade led by Genn and Darius' daughter Lorna establishedGreywatch to secureStormheim from threats. Darius later made an appearance if an Alliance player reaches Prestige Rank 2, where he is found in Stormwind Keep alongside PrincessTess Greymane following the accepting of the quest,A Royal Audience. He was among the audience that congratulated the character for their battles against the Horde, following their receiving of the [Grand Marshal's Medal of Valor] from Anduin Wrynn, as well as an artifact appearance.
Crowley was later found to have been taken captive by the naga on theBroken Shore alongside many other warriors. An Alliance warrior freed him, and he aided them in freeing the other warriors from the front. His counterpart for the Horde isEitrigg. Notably, unlike Eitrigg who does not have this function, if the warrior frees any Forsaken, Crowley has a chance to run up and instantly kill them. If a pack of warriors is freed and he does this, any worgen freed will also cheer.
Crowley then joined theValarjar as one of their followers, which also opened up recruitment for the7th Legion; despite Crowley not being a part of this organization. It's possible this is just due to his place as a leader in the Alliance and prior working with the 7th Legion in Gilneas. He can be used as a bodyguard or support companion, which will cause him to appear and do an extremely large amount of damage in a wide AoE bladestorm.
Battle for Azeroth[]

Crowley has returned leading a renewed Gilnean army into the Forsaken controlled territory of Hillsbrad following theBattle for Lordaeron. He specifically marches against theSludge Fields, which are amassing undead to assail Gilneas.[11][12]
Crowley followed his king when they were tasked into assaultingOrgrimmar'swestern gate whileAnduin Wrynn andVarok Saurfang's forces assaulted themain gates. Due to themak'gora betweenSylvanas Windrunner and Saurfang, they did not assault the city.

In Hearthstone[]

Darius appears asa legendary card for the warrior class in theThe Witchwood expansion forHearthstone. His flavor text reads:"You either die a villain, or live long enough to see yourself become the hero."
- He also represents the "Cannoneer" class in theMonster Hunt single-player experience.
Notes and trivia[]
- Despite his appearance on theSkyfire following the Broken Shore, Crowley does not make an appearance atGreywatch, nor does he appear during theCove of Nashal scenario. Numerous unused NPCs show that he may have been originally intended to accompany the player throughoutStormheim, rather than Lorna, or at the least have had more than one appearance, as it bears theGilneas Brigade tag, which none of his prior appearances bear, including theSkyfire. He does, however, re-appear when a player achieves Prestige Rank 2 and is honored by the Alliance during
[10-45] A Royal Audience, where he stands beside PrincessTess Greymane.
- Darius was presumably originally slated toappear inSkyhold. Whether this would have been as a recently deceased spirit, or as a still living character (as numerous other still livingwarriors were also going to appear alongside ghosts of warriors past) is unknown, given his aforementioned appearance in Stormwind, it is unlikely he would have been slain. Darius and Eitrigg eventually did make it into Skyhold as followers in7.2.
- Hisgeneric name in 7.2 isGreywatch Mauler.
- InCurse of the Worgen, it is discovered that Crowley could not resume his human form at the time of the invasion because he held onto guilt. It is unknown if this is still the case or if like the other worgen who undertook the worgen ritual, he was able to make peace with his emotions and bring balance to his human and worgen side.[5]
- There is a growing fanbase for Darius Crowley, mostly due to his ability to cleave mobs using only his fists during a quest in the worgen starting area. Due to this, it has been suggested by several players that he could finally be theAlliance's version ofVarok Saurfang.
- His name could be a reference to the 1980 song "Mr Crowley" byOzzy Osbourne, which is in turn a reference to 20th-century occultistAleister Crowley. This song is also used in the meme growing around the character, with fans referring to the character as "Miiiiister Croooowwwwley" (dun dun dun!). Early in its existence, the Mr. Crowley meme was referenced by the voice actorJesse Cox in his worgen starting zone videos.
- He could also be named after the Persian kingDarius the Great.
- In the Gilneas starter zone, and outside of it in early beta builds, Crowley's worgen form wielded a two-handed sword, however he has since been changed to dual wield fist weapons. It's possible this was done intentionally by Blizzard in response to his fistcleaving meme.
- He is occasionally referred to as "Lord Box Head", "Darius Boxhead" or "Boxhead Crowley" due to his worgen model in early beta builds.
- Darius was originally voiced byDavid Thewlis, who portrays the werewolfRemus Lupin in theHarry Potter film franchise. InWorld of Warcraft: Legion andHearthstone he is voiced by a new, currently unknown voice actor.
- One of Darius' irritated voicelines inLegion ("I'm about to lose control and I think I like it!") is a reference to the 1982 song "I'm So Excited" byThe Pointer Sisters.
