Winged Star is a star-typeAir Ride Machine that appears inKirby Air Ride andKirby Air Riders. As its name implies, it is known for being one of the fundamentally best gliders available. This machine is one of the most emblematic of its game, next to theWarp Star andShadow Star. It is easy to unlock early-on inKirby Air Ride and unlocked by default inKirby Air Riders, and is featured to a comparatively great extent in various official artwork, trailers, and other media.

Appearance[edit]

This vehicle is on the smaller side. Its design resembles a pale-blue bird, withKirby's seat, and the rear end, containing darker-blue accents. The seat has a zig-zagging slit across the middle, though only on the top of the machine. It has a narrow front-end tip, and wings spread out to each side. Each of its wings contain three small yellow triangles on their upper portions, and grooves on the bottom to give the appearance of feathers. Its rear is composed of three outspread jets, which expel a white jet-like propulsion while the machine is moving. While it charges in flight, it glows white, and glows brighter the longer it flies, prior to landing.

InKirby Air Riders, the Winged Star takes on essentially the same appearance. The exhaust it produces is generally bluer than it was in the previous game, however. This exhaust also takes on a red color and produces red trails when theboost button is held. The machine also no longer glows white while it is in the air, though streams of air are visible from the tips of the wings while it glides. Additionally, while the Winged Star is moving, each engine will emit a long, blue trail behind itself. The most significant change is that the area where the wings are attached has become segmented from the base with a dark blue top. This segmented area is flexible, allowing the wings to somewhat bend when performing actions such as aQuick Spin.

Mechanics[edit]

The Winged Star's greatest attribute is its ability to glide across vast distances at high speed, emphasized further by the machine's lightweight nature. Its light composition occasionally allows it to bounce up from one glide and chain several landings at once, giving its rider several consecutive glide-landing boosts. These advantages make Winged Star a viable Air Ride Machine for use inStadium modesAir Glider andHigh Jump.

The Winged Star turns and charges fairly well, but most of its other attributes are poor. It has low stats for offense, defense and HP, in addition to a somewhat lackluster land top speed of 14.47 mph (23.29 km/h). The Winged Star's great gliding distance is only exceeded by the legendary machineDragoon.

How to unlock[edit]

To unlock this machine for use inAir Ride mode, the player must enter any standard race, using any machine, and finish first while in the middle of a glide, or otherwise airborne.

InCity Trial, the Winged Star can occasionally be found randomly throughout the city and be mounted like most other air ride machines. It is always available in Free Run as well.

Kirby: Canvas Curse[edit]

This machine makes a cameo in thePaint PanicSub-Game ofKirby: Canvas Curse, as one of the various pictures thatPaint Roller creates, which the player must mimic.

Kirby Air Riders[edit]

InKirby Air Riders, the Winged Star reappears as one of the Air Ride Machines that can be used inAir Ride,Top Ride,City Trial, andRoad Trip.^[1] It retains a similar function and stat spread to the previous game, maintaining low combat stats and HP in exchange for one of the highest lift stats in the game. When used byKirby, it has a low grounded top speed of 22 mph (35 km/h), but to compensate has an impressive maximum flight speed of 35 mph (57 km/h). It has somewhat decent turning capabilities on the ground, but can change direction much more effectively whilst in the air.

While using this machine inAir Ride mode, one should focus on taking to the air and staying airborne as much as possible to get ahead. In general, the Winged Star pairs well with characters such asMeta Knight andStarman, who are inherently good at gliding. InCity Trial, the Winged Star can be found randomly spawning somewhere on the map. It excels at flying stadiums such asAir Glider andHigh Jump, and can do well in races provided there are ramps with which it can take to the air. The Winged Star can also be used during the city portion of the game to access the garden in the sky easily, as well as travel to one of the floating islands aroundSkyah, should they have spawned. However, it is recommended to avoid other players when possible while on this machine, as its fragility and low ground speed means it is quite easy to destroy on the ground.

How to unlock[edit]

It is unlocked by default in the prior three modes, but copies of it that can be customized in theMy Machine mode can be obtained via theChecklist. Additional copies can be purchased from theMiles Shop, with each costing 3,200Miles.

In the Road Trip mode, the Winged Star must be unlocked by either jumping onto it in the first area,Grassland Lane, or via purchase at the shop if it was missed.

Update history[edit]

InKirby: Right Back at Ya![edit]

The Winged Star appears inKirby: Right Back at Ya!, specifically the episodesAir-Ride-in-Style - Part I andPart II, andFright to the Finish. It is the most common Air Ride Machine used by theAir Riders, andKirby learns to fly the Winged Star while battling these foes. He later ends up using one to pursueeNeMeE into his inner sanctum, and uses it again to ferry himself andTiff away after eNeMeE is defeated.
