Whispy Woods
- This article is about Whispy Woods as a character. For other uses, seeWhispy Woods (disambiguation).
| “ | Please don't tread on my roots, it would not be a wise decision. | ” | — Whispy Woods, inKirby's Avalanche |
Whispy Woods (known in shorthand asWhispy, and titledGuardian of the Forest inKirby Star Allies) is an anthropomorphic tree who resides inDream Land and is most well known as being an early (if not the first)boss thatKirby faces in many of his adventures. In his simplest incarnations, he is incapable of moving, and can only attack by droppingapples and blowingAir Bullets at Kirby, but his many appearances and variants give him a variety of additional attacks, and in some cases, allow him to hop around or even run after his opponents.
Along withKracko, Whispy Woods is one of the most iconic boss characters in theKirby series, having made dozens of appearances since his debut inKirby's Dream Land, as well as appearing in theSuper Smash Bros. series and in other media such as theanime andnovel series. Additionally, there are many other entities throughout the series that are either related to Whispy Woods, inspired by him, or both. Whispy Woods is almost always an enemy to Kirby, though he does very occasionally appear as a neutral character or even an ally. The most notable examples of Whispy Woods being an ally are inKirby Tilt 'n' Tumble and the anime series,Kirby: Right Back at Ya!.
Physical appearance[edit]
Whispy Woods is characterized as an anthropomorphized apple tree with a humanoid 'face', though his nose is just a branch and his eyes and mouth are holes in his trunk which can widen and contract as needed. Being a tree, Whispy usually cannot move very much, generally being rooted to a fixed location whenever he is encountered. However, he can uproot himself to crawl or jump around, a fact which was first confirmed inKirby's Dream Land 3. Whispy is, for reasons typically unexplained, usually hostile towards Kirby and his friends, and attacks mainly by droppingApples from his canopy, or by blowing outAir Bullets from his mouth. His apples can beinhaled and used against him, and he is particularly weak toFire-based attacks as well.
Whispy Woods keeps his general look from game to game, though the particulars of his canopy size, trunk width, and other minor details tend to vary. Often, the front part of his canopy stretches out further than the back part, though this is less pronounced in games where he can jump to a new location.
Up untilKirby's Dream Course, Whispy Woods was depicted without any visible roots, and untilKirby Super Star he had no branches on his sides. FromKirby: Nightmare in Dream Land onward, Whispy fairly consistently has two stubs on his sides which resemble arms to an extent, but are completely useless to the tree. In some newer games, such asKirby and the Rainbow Curse, he is depicted with only one; in others, such asKirby Mass Attack, he has none at all.
Location[edit]
Whispy Woods makes his home in the lush greenery ofDream Land on PlanetPopstar, usually within a thick forest area. It is unknown if he routinely migrates, or if he lives in the same spot while the scenery changes around him (as he can be found in many differently-named areas, it may be that the area he resides in simply gets renamed again and again). However, Whispy Woods is able to uproot himself and even jump around in many games, which may explain his migration. Additionally, he can also be found in other more remote places — such asGreen Grounds on thePopopo Islands — or on other worlds entirely — likeSeventopia andFalluna Moon — which would suggest that there is more than one Whispy.
Varieties and relatives of Whispy Woods[edit]
Being one of the most iconic characters, Whispy Woods has many relatives and off-shoots, as well as other characters, enemies and bosses which are similar to him. These include the following:
- Twin Woods - A twin variant of Whispy Woods found inKirby Super Star,Kirby Super Star Ultra andKirby Fighters 2.
- Whispy Woods Jr. - Saplings of Whispy Woods capable of hopping around. They are seen inKirby 64: The Crystal Shards.

- Floaty Woods - These guys appear inKirby Mass Attack and can be knocked over to serve as a raft over water.
- Flowery Woods - A flower which was transformed into a giant flower tree similar to Whispy. Drops pollen and throws its roots and flower petals about. Appears inKirby: Triple Deluxe.
- Clanky Woods - A mechanized version of Whispy Woods that walks around on drill-tipped legs and fires missiles. Easily the most mobile of all the Whispy relatives. Appears inKirby: Planet Robobot.
- Mini Whispy Woods - A smaller version of Whispy who drops apples for theApple Scramble game inKirby Battle Royale. Always appears in pairs.
- Yggy Woods - An ancient toxic cherry tree who is more powerful than Whispy, but shares his weaknesses. Appears inKirby Star Allies.
- Parallel Woods - A vastly more powerful version of Whispy Woods fromAnother Dimension. Appears in theHeroes in Another Dimension mode inKirby Star Allies.
- Tropic Woods - A palm tree variant of Whispy Woods that appears as a boss inKirby and the Forgotten Land.

Kirby's Dream Land[edit]

Whispy Woods is the first boss ofKirby's Dream Land, fought at the end ofGreen Greens and later on appears inMt. Dedede. His attack patterns are extremely simple, and will either shoot out a fewAir Bullets atKirby, or will dropApples from his canopy. Kirby can inhale the apples and spit them back out asStar Bullets to deal Whispy damage. After six hits, he stops fighting, and yields aSparkling Star for Kirby to collect.
In pre-release material for the game, Whispy Woods was referred to as "Buster Woodo" (バスターウドォ,Basuta Udō).[1] His behavior of shooting Air Bullets was also stated to be the result of him yawning due to boredom over his inability to move.[2] Whispy Woods' original name was later referenced ina password forTeam Kirby Clash Deluxe.
TheSuper Game Boy player's guide for the game suggests that "Wispy Woods" is the name of Green Greens' forest as a whole, and that the individual tree that Kirby faces is named the "Larkspur Liar",[3] who spews oak chunks and chestnuts (rather than air bullets). It also states the apples dropped during the fight come from the other trees within the woods. This is never mentioned to be the case in any other source, and was likely just fabricated by the guide due to a lack of information about the game.
In theExtra Game, Whispy will also dropGordos from his canopy.
Kirby's Adventure /Kirby: Nightmare in Dream Land[edit]

InKirby's Adventure andKirby: Nightmare in Dream Land, Whispy is faced at the end ofVegetable Valley. His attack patterns are exactly the same as inKirby's Dream Land. Once defeated, Whispy sheds a tear and yields the first piece of theStar Rod for Kirby to collect.
Whispy is also the first boss that Kirby will face as part of theBoss Endurance.
Kirby's Pinball Land[edit]
Whispy is the last obstacle ofWispy-Woods Land inKirby's Pinball Land, faced in a separate board. Like in his main game incarnations, he will drop apples and shoot out air bullets, which act as bumpers. He may also dropGordos from his canopy which are capable of disabling the flippers. Kirby has to crash into his face eight times to defeat him and clear the course.
Kirby's Dream Course[edit]

Whispy is not a boss inKirby's Dream Course. Instead, he can be seen in several locations, either offstage, or as a stage hazard. This is the first game in the series where he is depicted with roots. He can be destroyed using offensiveCopy Abilities likeBurning orSpark. He also appears on platform during end of the course. Unlike most other enemies, Whispy Woods does not need to be defeated to make the cup appear.
Whispy Woods also has his own stage in 2P Mode -Whispy Woods Course.

Kirby's Dream Land 2[edit]

Whispy serves as the first boss inKirby's Dream Land 2, at the end ofGrass Land. In his first phase, he wears glasses and a surgical mask, preventing him from shooting out air bullets. However, he can now attack with his roots. Once he is hit enough times, his accessories fall off, and he continues the fight as usual.
The glasses and mask are likely an ironic joke, as these are commonly worn to preventhay fever, especially in Japan; hay fever is itself caused by allergies to the pollen created by plants.
Whispy also participates in the Grass LandBonus Chance, where he spits out Apples andPoint Stars, the latter of which Kirby needs to collect. Moreover, he appears in the game's true ending cutscene alongsideCoo.
Kirby's Avalanche[edit]
InKirby's Avalanche, Whispy is the second opponent fought in the main game. He is relatively easy, and will always start the match by trying to build four rows of puyos at the bottom. HisPuyo Puyo equivalent is Suketoudara.
Kirby's Block Ball[edit]
Whispy Woods appears both as a regular enemy and as a Boss inStage 8 ofKirby's Block Ball. His enemy variant takes 4 hits to defeat and is worth 5000 points. His boss form has 12 HP and is worth 50000 points when defeated. Whispy attacks by dropping Gordos from his canopy and spitting air bullets.
Kirby Super Star[edit]

InKirby Super Star, Whispy Woods is first encountered inSpring Breeze, serving as the first intended boss in the game. He fights in a similar way as in the other games with hisApples andAir Bullets. Whispy Woods is seen again duringRevenge of Meta Knight, and defeating him here leads to a second encounter with a dual version of himself calledTwin Woods. Whispy Woods also appears as a boss inThe Arena.
Whispy Woods also makes an appearance in the gameDyna Blade, where Kirby feeds some of his apples toDyna Blade's chicks.
Kirby's Dream Land 3[edit]

InKirby's Dream Land 3, Whispy serves as the boss of the first level,Grass Land. While he can still spit out Air Bullets, Whispy will spit out apples and vegetables that Kirby must use to retaliate with (if he does not have any abilities) and does not drop apples from his branches. This battle comes in two phases, with the second involving Whispy getting an angry face, uprooting himself and chasing Kirby down. He can kick Kirby away if he's near him. He will still spit out apples and vegetables at Kirby, but they will be rotten and will stick to the ground; nevertheless, Kirby can still use them as ammo. After defeating him, he loses his face and stops moving. If Kirby sees him again after getting all theHeart Stars in Grass Land, he will no longer attack Kirby and just looks at him.
When Whispy is fought inBoss Butch, the battle area takes place in fall, with Whispy and all the other trees having orange leaves.
Kirby's Star Stacker (Super Famicom)[edit]
In the Super Famicom version ofKirby's Star Stacker, Whispy Woods can be seen in the background of some cutscenes.
Kirby 64: The Crystal Shards[edit]

Whispy Woods is the final obstacle Kirby faces at the end ofPop Star inKirby 64: The Crystal Shards. Here, Kirby does battle with the old tree (now sporting a checkerboard pattern on his bark) in a circular ring. As such, Kirby cannot attack Whispy's trunk directly as per usual. Instead, Kirby must first defeat all three of Whispy Woods' children (calledWhispy Woods Jr.), and then provoke the tree into sending his roots out to attack. Kirby can then strike these roots to defeat the tree and move on with his adventure.
Kirby Tilt 'n' Tumble[edit]

InKirby Tilt 'n' Tumble, Whispy Woods is not a boss. Instead, he can be found inLvl 3-1 andLvl 6-1 off the beaten path. When Kirby talks to Whispy, the old tree will offer to send him to a later level. In 3-1, Kirby can skip toLevel 6, and in 6-1, Kirby can skip toLevel 8. Details on how to reach him can be found on the related stage pages where he appears.
Kirby Air Ride[edit]
Whispy Woods can be found in a small grove of trees in theCity Trial map inKirby Air Ride. He doesn't do anything to the Kirbys, but bumping into him will cause him to take damage and hitting him enough times will 'defeat' him, leaving him in his defeat pose for the rest of the match. In this state it is no longer possible to interact with him.
Kirby: Squeak Squad[edit]
Whispy is not fought as a boss inKirby: Squeak Squad, but he does appear on the title screen, using his appearance as a boss fromKirby: Nightmare in Dream Land.
Kirby Super Star Ultra[edit]
InKirby Super Star Ultra, Whispy Woods reprises his roles fromKirby Super Star, appearing as a boss inSpring Breeze,Revenge of Meta Knight, andThe Arena, and appearing in the ending cutscene ofDyna Blade. He is also fought inHelper to Hero andMeta Knightmare Ultra. Whispy Woods also appears on a card inKirby Card Swipe.
Kirby Super Star Ultra also introduces a powered-up form of Whispy Woods known asWhispy's Revenge, who appears as the boss ofPurple Plants inRevenge of the King and is also fought inThe True Arena. He has purple leaves and stronger attacks; in addition to the standard abilities of his original incarnation, he can now blow tornadoes, makepoison apples fall from his leaves, and drop manyGordos andCaterpillars. While his boss icon depicts him with the arm-like stumps on his side, he does not have them in the battle.
- Whispy's Revenge
Kirby's Epic Yarn /Kirby's Extra Epic Yarn[edit]

InKirby's Epic Yarn and its3DS version, Whispy Woods is fought as a mid-boss inWhispy's Forest, the first stage ofDream Land. Kirby fights Whispy with hisTankbot form, using missiles to attack Whispy's body. Whispy's attacks pattern are the same from otherKirby games: he can spit outAir Bullets to damage Kirby and can throwApples in a faster way than his earlier appearances, though both of these can be shot down using missiles. Notably, Whispy Woods begins to sag more and more as he takes damage, eventually becoming scrunched down when he is defeated.
Kirby Mass Attack[edit]

| “ | I feel like I've seen the boss of this island somewhere before... If you're trying to cut him down to size, I'd say you should attack the hard parts of his body. Watch out for the spiked balls though. Keep your eyes peeled for attacks from above. After he drops those, I bet he'll get tired and stop moving for a little while. That's the time to strike! | ” | — Daroach inKirby Mass Attack |
InKirby Mass Attack, Whispy Woods appears as the boss ofGreen Grounds. Rather than his usual strategy of dropping apples, the massive tree drops huge spiked balls which, if colored red, will shatter once they hit the ground, and if colored green, they will bounce about. Whispy also rises up into several segments that sprout bouncy mushrooms or dangerous spikes. When not having neither mushrooms or spikes sprouted, these segments must be struck until they break, so that the main tree can be hit and defeated. Later in the game, the Kirbys have a rematch against Whispy Woods inNecro Nebula, where he features a purple color scheme, both on his leaves and his trunk.
Whispy Woods also appears in theSub-GameField Frenzy, where he is worth 60 points and requires fast reaction time to be tapped. Whispy Woods also appears as the first boss of the Sub-GamesStrato Patrol EOS andKirby Brawlball. Flanked by threeBigger Beanbons in Strato Patrol EOS, Whispy attacks by dropping three green bouncy spiked fruits or turning his nose into missiles, as well as being defended by the Beanbons and their explosive seeds. In Kirby Brawlball, he does not use apples for unknown reasons, instead relying only on hisAir Bullets.
Kirby's Return to Dream Land /Kirby's Return to Dream Land Deluxe[edit]

InKirby's Return to Dream Land, Whispy Woods once again appears as the boss of the first level of the game,Cookie Country. He guards theLor Starcutter's oars and has been given more attacks than in any previous incarnation, especially inExtra Mode. Whispy Woods will once again use the initial strategy of dropping apples and puffing air in the beginning stages. Additionally, Whispy Woods will grow significantly larger once his health drops to about half, dropping enemies such asWaddle Dees andGordos. Whispy Woods will also inhale Kirby and chew on him, causing damage, forcing the player to shake the controller (or alternatively, spin the Control Stick inKirby's Return to Dream Land Deluxe) to allow Kirby to escape.
The Japanese, Chinese and Korean versions ofKirby's Return to Dream Land Deluxe heavily imply that Whispy Woods is under a thrall created by the oars, explaining his more aggressive behavior than usual.[4][5] This is somewhat implied in the other foreign translations, but not as heavily.
The following lists all of Whispy's attacks in the Story Mode ofKirby's Return to Dream Land.
| Attacks - Story Mode | |
|---|---|
| Attack | Description |
| リンゴ落とし Apple Drop | Whispy drops three apples that bounce along the ground. These can be inhaled and spat back at Whispy. In the second phase, five total apples drop from his canopy, with two large ones mixed in with the three smaller ones. Additionally, in phase 1, threeComos may swing down from Whispy's canopy to do his bidding. They rise back up if not interacted with. |
| 空気弾 Air Bullet | Whispy spits one set of two and another set of fourAir Bullets that travel a short distance then rise up or down, depending on Kirby's positioning. In the second phase, this attack creates two waves of three large Air Bullets. |
| Second phase only | |
| ウィスピー吸い込み Whispy Inhale | Whispy preps himself and then starts inhaling for an extended period. If Kirby is captured, Whispy will chew until the player shakes the controller (or mashes directions on the Control Stick inKirby's Return to Dream Land Deluxe) enough to let him escape. He always begins the second phase with this attack. |
| 落下物攻撃 Falling Object Attack | Different enemies form within Whispy's canopy, then drop to attack Kirby. These can includeBronto Burt,Gordo,Waddle Dee andComo. The first time this attack is used, two enemies fall from the canopy. Every other time, three enemies fall. |
Attack names are from official Japanese strategy guides unless otherwise stated. | |
In phase 1, Whispy Woods attacks in a fixed order on loop as follows:
- Apple Drop [3 apples]
- Air Bullet
- Apple Drop [3 Comos]
- Air Bullet
In phase 2, Whispy Woods attacks in a fixed order on loop as follows:
- Whispy Inhale
- Falling Object Attack
- Whispy Inhale
- Air Bullet
- Apple Drop
- Whispy Inhale
- Falling Object Attack
InExtra Mode, Whispy Woods EX has a more toxic-looking color scheme: his bark is a duller gray and his leaves have changed from green to a deep purple, similar to Whispy's Revenge. His pre-existing attacks are now stronger and he has more attacks, as outlined below:
| Attacks - Extra Mode | |
|---|---|
| Attack | Description |
| 巨大トルネイド弾 Giant Tornado Bullet | Whispy spits out three small tornadoes that spin quickly across the ground before rising to the left. |
| リンゴ落とし Apple Drop | Whispy drops up to four apples that bounce along the ground. One or more apples is poisonous, which will hurt Kirby if he inhales or swallows it. Whispy may also throw large Gordos orComos into the mix. |
| 根っこ Root | Whispy shoots his roots out in sharp spikes near his trunk, to fend off would-be attackers. |
| 空気弾 Air Bullet | Whispy spits out up to four Air Bullets of purple gas that move in erratic patterns. In the second phase, Whispy will release a cluster of three Air Bullets, then follow with a Giant Tornado Bullet. |
| Second phase only | |
| ウィスピー吸い込み Whispy Inhale | Whispy preps himself and then starts inhaling for an extended period, while two apples drop from his canopy in an attempt to trip up anyone trying to run away. If Kirby is captured, Whispy will chew until the player shakes the controller (or mashes directions on the Control Stick inKirby's Return to Dream Land Deluxe) enough to let him escape. |
| 落下物攻撃 Falling Object Attack | Three different enemies form within Whispy's canopy, then drop to attack Kirby. These can includeBronto Burt,Gordo,Waddle Dee,Scarfy andComo. |
Attack names are from official Japanese strategy guides unless otherwise stated. | |
Defeating Whispy Woods will cause him to shrink to smaller than when the battle started (notably in the canopy area) and yield the Part Sphere containing the Lor Starcutter's oars, while producing his charismatic tear.

Lastly, exclusively inDeluxe, Whispy Woods will appear inMerry Magoland once his respective boss battle is complete. Whispy Woods has his ownDress-Up Masks, based on his original and EX appearances, which are unlocked by defeating him in Story Mode and Extra Mode, respectively.
Kirby's Dream Collection Special Edition[edit]

In addition to his appearance in the games featured in the collection, Whispy makes an appearance inNew Challenge Stages ofKirby's Dream Collection Special Edition, serving as the final opponent in theSmash Combat Chamber EX. His appearance and fighting style is taken directly fromKirby's Return to Dream Land, but notably, while he bears his normal color scheme, he fights like his EX version except he does not attack with his roots. Like in theTeam Kirby Clash games, Whispy'shealth bar is not visible during the fight.
Kirby: Triple Deluxe[edit]
InKirby: Triple Deluxe, Whispy Woods only appears as a rare collectibleKeychain. It is based on his appearance inKirby's Dream Land, and depicts the entire area around him because Whispy serves as both a background element and a boss in that game. In this game, Whispy's typical role as a first boss is replaced with a similar entity calledFlowery Woods. Whispy Woods is mentioned in Flowery Woods DX's pause screen caption, where it says the relation between the two is unknown.
Kirby and the Rainbow Curse[edit]

Whispy is fought three times inKirby and the Rainbow Curse, first at the end ofGreen Valley, again at the end ofBlue Sky Palace, and one last time inChallenge 48. He attacks by summoning floating spiky flowers that Kirby must dodge, but also summons helpful items likePoint Stars and cherries. He also drops mines from his foilage, and blows wind at Kirby to push him away. Unlike most other incidents of this boss, Whispy does not useapples to attack, and instead he must be damaged by crashing into his face with aTouch Dash or aStar Dash. When half of his health is depleted, he summonsBronto Knights as well as a swarm of pink and blueBronto Burts.
When he is fought in Blue Sky Palace, he turns himself metal, meaning that only a Star Dash can hurt him. While retaining all of his previous form's moves, he summons more spiky flowers and drops more mines. When half of his heatlh is depleted, he summonsBarampas.
Notably, in the initial reveal teaser forKirby and the Rainbow Curse atE3 2014, Kirby was shown battling Whispy Woods using acannon, which is not present in the final version of the fight. The background for the first fight of Whispy Woods also slightly differs from the final release as well, such as the appearance of tree roots.
Kirby: Planet Robobot[edit]

InKirby: Planet Robobot, Whispy Woods serves as a boss in theSub-GameTeam Kirby Clash. His ability to leap between the foreground and background and some of his attacks take cues from hisKirby: Triple Deluxe relative,Flowery Woods. For more information on these attacks, see theTeam Kirby Clash Deluxe &Super Kirby Clash section below.
- Main article:Clanky Woods
In the Story Mode, Whispy has been mechanized and turned intoClanky Woods. He can now move around due to the spindly "legs" on his base.
Team Kirby Clash Deluxe &Super Kirby Clash[edit]

Whispy Woods is encountered twice inTeam Kirby Clash Deluxe and thrice in its successorSuper Kirby Clash. Both games treat Whispy Woods the exact same way, with the fights being almost indistinguishable. The first fight is much the same as it was in the original Sub-Game, but his Tougher fights throwGordos into the mix, and make his leaping attacks quicker and more unpredictable.
InTeam Kirby Clash Deluxe specifically, Whispy serves the role of the second Ordeal in his first encounter, with his defeat unlocking the Volcano region.

The following are all of Whispy Woods' attacks inTeam Kirby Clash Deluxe andSuper Kirby Clash:

Kirby Star Allies[edit]

Whispy Woods returns as a boss inKirby Star Allies. His fight is similar to earlier bouts, though with his ability to jump likeFlowery Woods now firmly established. Partway into the fight, Whispy grows much larger, and starts emitting purple gas from his eyes and mouth. From here, his attacks become much more potent, with a prominent example being his ability to shower the entire area with hundreds ofApples. This increased power is the result of Whispy Woods absorbing one of theDark Hearts that fell onto Popstar. When Whispy Woods is defeated, the heart pops out of him before he ceases fighting.

In addition to his powered-up attacks, Whispy has a severe weakness to Fire-based attacks. If Kirby and all of his allies attack him at once using fiery attacks during the second phase, Whispy will catch fire, and continually take damage until defeated, being no longer able to fight. Whispy also has an older relative in this title, calledYggy Woods, and an even more powerful relative fromAnother Dimension known asParallel Woods. Kirby Fighters 2[edit]
While Whispy doesn't appear physically appear in this game, his dual version,Twin Woods, does. One of theRare Hats for theStaff Copy Ability, theWhispy Headgear, is also based on him.
Kirby's Dream Buffet[edit]

Whispy Woods makes an appearance in cake form as a stage hazard inKirby's Dream Buffet. He is primarily found on theWhispy Stage CakeBattle Royale stage, and routinely hops back and forth between three different positions on the board: left, center, and right. When Kirby bumps into him, he will dropstrawberries from his canopy, dropping a greater amount if he had not been hit for a while. Much like inCity Trial, if Whispy is hit too many times, he will be "defeated" and adopt his sad expression. He will drop a lot of strawberries when this happens, but afterward he will cease to drop any for a while. When the time is up in the game, Whispy Woods will smile and waves his stump arms along with the Kirbys.
Whispy Woods also makes an appearance in theFree Rolling Mode, where he can be found near the back of the stage on the right side, near someFood Boxes andGordos. His behavior is largely the same as it is on his Battle Royale stage, but he always stays put. If Kirby knocks a Waddle Dee treat into him, he will celebrate and drop lots of Strawberries for Kirby.
Lastly, Whispy Woods' likeness appears on aCharacter Treat, depicting his art fromKirby's Dream Land.
Kirby Air Riders[edit]
Whispy Woods reappears as a stage element inSkyah during theCity Trial mode inKirby Air Riders. He serves a very similar role to his appearance inKirby Air Ride, being stationed in Skyah's forest section as a harmless obstacle that can be damaged by riders. Inflicting enough damage to him will "defeat" him, making him sad and rendering him impervious for the remainder of the match.
In addition, Whispy Woods appears inRoad Trip as the first obstacle the player encounters at the end ofGrassland Lane. Depending on the assistance the player acquires, he can be dealt with in one of three ways: throwing a Gordo at him, which angers him and causes him to send the rider toBig Brawny Jungle, calling aPoppy Bros. Jr, who incinerates Whispy and sends the player toMega-Blossom Meadow, or using aFriend Heart, which pacifies Whispy and sends the player toSugarcoated Straightaway.
Super Smash Bros. series[edit]
Whispy Woods has appeared in everySuper Smash Bros. game as a stage hazard forKirby-based stages. In theoriginal N64 game, he appears as part of theDream Land stage, occasionally blowing gusts of wind that cause all the players on one side of the stage to slide sideways. Oddly, Whispy's name is misspelt as "Whisper Woods" in the instruction manual.
InSuper Smash Bros. Melee, Whispy Woods is found in the background of theGreen Greens stage. He will occasionally blow, which will move the fighters. He will also sometimes launch several apples onto the stage, which can be eaten as healing items or thrown at opponents (this is determined at random when the apple is picked up).
Likewise, whenever these two stages were featured in later installments, Whispy Woods would follow them. At least one of these stages appears in every subsequent game in the series.
InSuper Smash Bros. Brawl, Whispy Woods also appears as asticker. Equipping this sticker grants +4 to weapon attack damage for Kirby, Meta Knight, and King Dedede.
In addition, inSuper Smash Bros. Ultimate, he appears as a ★★★ shield-type primaryspirit. His level 1 stats are 1,183 attack and 1,813 defense, and his level 99 stats are 3,565 attack and 5,461 defense.

|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Episode | Image | Role | Role details | Selected quote | Notes |
| Beware: Whispy Woods! | Primary character | In this episode, Whispy Woods is introduced as the guardian of the forest in Dream Land which bears his name. He protects it via mysterious means, causing any trespassers to become lost and unable to find their way out. King Dedede plans on chopping down Whispy Woods' Forest in order to build a country club, so he hatches a plan to make Whispy Woods believe that Kirby and his friends seek to do him harm. Whispy falls for this and, after trapping Kirby and co. inside the forest, he buries them in a pile of apples. In doing so, however, Whispy leaves himself momentarily defenseless; just long enough for King Dedede to step in and use a chainsaw to cut down Whispy Woods, allowing him to then clear-cut the entire forest with impunity. Later on, it is revealed that one of Whispy Woods' errant apples could be used to revive him, and Kirby has to spend some time looking inside himself for the correct one while King Dedede celebrates the opening of his golf course. Kirby finds it just in time and spits it out, where it then implants into the soil. From here, it rapidly regrows into Whispy Woods, who then takes King Dedede's hammer and uses it to punish King Dedede and regrow the forest over the golf course by batting more apples around. Once the forest is restored, Kirby and co. reconcile with Whispy Woods—their misunderstanding cleared up—while both King Dedede and Escargoon are punished by being stranded in Whispy Woods' Forest with no clear way out. | "I'll show you all! Behold the fruit of your folly!" | ||
| Cappy New Year | Tertiary character | Whispy Woods is only seen briefly, watching the fireworks display at the end of the episode. | (no dialogue) | ||
| The Flower Plot | Primary character | In this episode, Kirby and co. visit Whispy Woods in the forest, and soon discover that a small flower has grown in Whispy's grove. Whispy quickly becomes infatuated with this flower (naming itLovely), and Kirby and co. agree to help protect it from the elements so that it can flourish. Learning of this, King Dedede hatches a plan to get back at Whispy Woods by stealing Lovely and having Night Mare Enterprises turn it into a monster. This ends up working despite Kirby and co.'s efforts to stop it, and the flower—now transformed—grows a face and starts sweet-talking Whispy Woods, infatuating him further. Meanwhile, Lovely is using her roots to sap Whispy Woods' life force slowly, intent on starving him and causing him to wilt. Tiff starts to notice this and tries to get rid of Lovely, but Whispy Woods stops her in the act. All seems lost as Lovely transforms into a giant monster flower and intensifies her draining of Whispy's life force, but eventually Lovely loses Whispy's favor when she tries to attack Kirby and co. Kirby uses the opening to swallow one of Lovely's razor petals and gain theCutter ability, using it to finish off the flower, causing her to wilt. Later on, when Whispy Woods has recovered, the remains of the monster Lovely are replaced with a hearty patch of harmless flowers. | "You must try to understand! I will never battle Lovely! I'd rather perish!" | ||
| Prediction Predicament - Part II | Tertiary character | Whispy Woods is only seen briefly, watching asthe asteroid approaches Dream Land during the final moments before the anticipated impact. | (no dialogue) | ||
| War of the Woods | Secondary character | At the start of this episode, Whispy Woods informs Kirby and his friends aboutAcore, and expresses his concern for the old tree's well-being. Whispy asks Kirby and co. to visit Acore and make sure he is okay while he hibernates. After this point, Whispy Woods is not seen again. | "I can't be certain. He's been around for eight hundred years. There are many perils at such a great age." | ||
| Trick or Trek | Secondary character | Whispy Woods makes an appearance towards the end of this episode, as the wildfire started by King Dedede and Escargoon begins to approach his grove. He appears to have accepted his fate, and instead tries to set up a barrier around Lovely to try and shield her from the flames. When King Dedede and Escargoon run into the grove by accident while trying to escape the flames, Whispy Woods correctly assumes them to be responsible and hoists the two up using his roots, making sure they are taken with him in the fire. Just as the fire starts to lick at Whispy, however, they are all saved whenTornado Kirby creates a rainstorm to put out the blaze. Whispy Woods later participates in the punishment placed on King Dedede and Escargoon by forcing them to replant all the trees that were burnt down in the fire. | "I will protect you for as long as I am able." | ||
| Air-Ride-in-Style - Part I | Tertiary character | In this episode, Whispy Woods can be briefly seen watching as theDestroya begins its attack on Dream Land. He is surrounded by many other woodland creatures, including most notablyPhan Phan, and has braced Lovely with his roots once again. | (no dialogue) | Appears only in the Japanese version. | |
| Cappy Town Down | Tertiary character | In this episode, Whispy Woods can be briefly seen watching as theHalberd departs from Dream Land, along with the other woodland creatures as before. | (no dialogue) | ||

| “ | Lives in the forest of Dream Land. He produces a sweet and delicious red fruit. | ” | — Unofficial translation of Whispy Woods's description fromKirby: Uproar at the Kirby Café?! |
In theKirby novel series, Whispy Woods appears inKirby's Decisive Battle! Battle Royale!! as a supporting character and inKirby: Uproar at the Kirby Café?! as a tetartagonist.
InKirby's Decisive Battle! Battle Royale!!, afterSoldier Waddle Dee challengesKirby to a match ofApple Scramble, they go to the arena and find Whispy Woods. He tells Kirby that he wanted to participate in Dedede's Cake Royale, but a group of Waddle Dees who wanted apples has rooted him in the dry soil of the arena. Needing to collect apples as part of the match, Kirby asks Whispy Woods to help him, but he refuses, since he doesn't want to help another competitor. He drops fruits to attack Kirby, who dodges and gathers the fruits. Becoming angry, he shoots air bullets at Kirby, who begs him to stop. Kirby fights Whispy Woods, which causes him to drop even more fruits, and Kirby picks them to win the match.
InKirby: Uproar at the Kirby Café?!,King Dedede notices that Whispy Woods is sleeping and plucks an apple off of him. At the same time, an insect bites Whispy Woods, causing him to wake up, scream and shake his branches, leading to an apple falling on Dedede's head. Thinking that Dedede was the one attacking him, Whispy becomes angry at him and demands an apology. Dedede refuses, so Whispy shoots an air bullet at him. King Dedede runs away and swears to never eat Whispy's fruits again.
WhenChef Kawasaki creates a new pie containing Whispy Woods' fruits, he and Kirby go to collect Whispy's fruits. Whispy, who remained grumpy about his quarrel with Dedede, cheers up after hearing them complimenting the taste of his fruits. He laughs and causes fruits to fall, and Kirby and Kawasaki pick them up. Kirby visits Whispy Woods to gather more fruits, joined byBandana Waddle Dee. When he sees Waddle Dee, Dedede's servant, Whispy becomes angry and asks Waddle if Dedede wants to steal more of his fruits. Kirby tells him that Waddle Dee only came to help collect the fruits, but he refuses to give his fruits to anyone working for Dedede. After Kirby becomes mad from his behavior, Whispy freaks out and apologizes, and Kirby and Waddle Dee gather the fruits to the restaurant.
After going back and forth gathering fruit, Kirby gets the idea to move the restaurant near Whispy, but Chef Kawasaki tells him that instead they should open a new café around him. When they start building furniture for the new café,Bronto Burt come and asks if it was King Dedede's idea, causing Whispy Woods to become mad and say that he won't allow Dedede to enter the new café. Later, while they continue working, they notice that Whispy looks ill. He tells them that he is fine, but the disease from the insect begins to affect him.
Whispy's condition continues to worsen, he is feeling sick and cold, his leaves have started to wilt, and his fruits have turned sour. After worrying that they will lose the competition against the Dedede Café, Whispy promises to Kirby and Chef Kawasaki that he will heal in time to produce fruits for the competition. Kirby tells him that he will search for medicine for him. When King Dedede visits Whispy Woods, he initially thinks that he came to ridicule him. Dedede denies that and teases him, but after hearing about Whispy's symptoms, he recognizes them as the same as his illness. They understand that the sting that Whispy felt before they fought was from the insect bite and King Dedede and Kirby go to findGreen Spider Grass for the medicine.
When Kirby and King Dedede return with the cure, Whispy Woods doesn't answer them. Dedede tickles his nose with the Green Spider Grass and cause him to sneeze and wake up. While his mouth is open, he pours to it the medicine. Whispy at first becomes angry, but quickly realizes the medicine healing effect starts to work. After being cured, he quickly produces a lot of apples for the competition. King Dedede apologizes to Whispy Woods and tells him that the reason that they were mad at each other was because of the effect of the insect bite. Whispy tells him that he was just in a bad mood, while Dedede denies it. Whispy Woods thanks Dedede for the cure and they make peace with each other.

Kirby's Dream Land Super Game Boy Nintendo Player's Guide[edit]
In the Wispy Woods
At the very end of this level, a new type of boss is waiting, the Larkspur Liar. From deep within his trunk, he'll spew oak chunks and chestnuts. On top of that, the other trees in the woods will try to crush Kirby with their fruit. But the Larkspur isn't a very tough boss. Kirby simply has to catch a few of the fallen apples and throw them at Larkspur Liar to defeat him.
Play Nintendo[edit]
This lively tree is a protector of the forest, and somehow he always ends up in Kirby’s way.
His bark is usually worse than his bite, but he’ll fight back if you step on his roots. And, if you make him really mad, he’ll even toss his apples at you!
Nintendo Today![edit]
Whispy Woods, a familiar boss from throughout the series. He is the Guardian of the Forest on Planet Popstar and has a blank, staring face. He attacks by dropping apples and Capillers, but his eyes fill with tears when Kirby defeats him.
Trivia[edit]
- In early games in theKirby series, the actual entity of Whispy Woods was little more than his face. The tree was just a background element. Kirby also gets hurt when touching Whispy's face/nose in some of these games.
- Whispy Woods (not counting his relatives) has appeared in a total of 23Kirby games, 18 of which were as a boss or mid-boss. This ranks Whispy Woods as the second most prevalent boss character afterKracko (not countingKing Dedede, who makes appearances as a playable character just as often as a boss).
- Whispy Woods is typically portrayed as being roughly 9Kirbys tall, before any other transformations or changes in size are taken into account. Given Kirby's height of 20 cm (8 inches), this would make the tree 1.8 meters (or 6 feet) tall.
- In most games, Whispy Woods is referred to as either neuter or male, but in the Brazilian Portuguese version ofKirby's Return to Dream Land Deluxe, he is referred to as female. This is likely because Portuguese has grammatical gender, and the Portuguese words for "tree" (árvore) and "wood" (madeira) are both grammatically female. This is further evidenced byGrand Doomer also being referred to as female, likely due to its Portuguese name ("Spectrosfera Mor") being derived from the Portuguese word for "sphere" (esfera) which is also female.
- Concept art for theThe Super Mario Bros. Movie features what appears to be a Whispy Woods figure in the Mario family's house kitchen.[6]
