That whip is cool and all... but the hat is where it's really at. Whip your enemies into shape! Wrap 'em up while you're at it!
— Knuckle Joe's comment inKirby Battle Royale

Whip is aCopy Ability that debuted inKirby's Return to Dream Land, obtained by swallowing whip-related enemies. Whip Kirby wears a red leather cowboy hat adorned with light blue stars. The brim has a yellow flower-like design and a brown thread keeping it together.Kirby attacks by lashing out his whip in several ways. The ability can be used to obtain items across solid walls, as Kirby's whip can go through them. This allows him to reach otherwise unreachableswitches andstars. Kirby can also use the whip to grab enemies and items from a distance, and then toss the former around to defeat them, including tossing them at other enemies to deal collateral damage. This aspect makes the Whip ability a particularly potent one in theKirby Fighters games.

Kirby's Return to Dream Land /Kirby's Return to Dream Land Deluxe[edit]

Kirby can use the Whip to grab items from behind barricades, as demonstrated in this side area inKirby's Return to Dream Land.

The Whip ability debuted inKirby's Return to Dream Land and also appears in the remake,Kirby's Return to Dream Land Deluxe, first appearing prominently in theRaisin Ruins stage. It allows Kirby to attack at a distance, and grab both items and enemies from a distance, even through walls and other obstacles. AChallenge Stage simply called theWhip Challenge is devoted to the Whip ability, which can be accessed once 25Energy Spheres are collected.

In theKirby novel series, the Whip ability makes an appearance inKirby's Decisive Battle! Battle Royale!!, inKirby Fighters: The Destined Rivals!! and inKirby: Lor Starcutter and a Magician of Falsehood.

InKirby's Decisive Battle! Battle Royale!!,Kirby andWaddle Dee face against Whip andHammer Kirby copies in a match ofOre Express. Whip Kirby uses the range of his whip to snatch the ores from a distance, before anyone else can grab them. He tosses them on the train, earning points for his team. With accordance to Waddle Dee's strategy, Kirby holds Whip Kirby back by fighting him, preventing him from grabbing more ore chunks. After their defeat, the Whip and Hammer Kirby copies get on the train, disappearing into the distance, leaving Kirby and Waddle Dee to wonder why they did that. It isn't until near the end of the story where it's revealed that the two copies most likely started devouring all of Dream Land's food as part of Tron's plan to cause a food shortage and sell his terrible food for a profit.

InKirby Fighters: The Destined Rivals!!, Kirby and Waddle Dee encounter Whip and aBomb Kirby copies at the ground floor of the Buddy Fighters Tower. At first, they think they are Waddle Dees in disguise, and ask them to reveal themselves. However, Whip Kirby silently lashes his whip towards Waddle Dee, and Kirby protects him, taking the damage instead. Kirby snatches Whip Kirby's whip and uses it to defeat the Kirby copies. After Waddle Dee tries pulling their faces, it is revealed to them that they are in fact Kirby copies.

InKirby: Lor Starcutter and a Magician of Falsehood, Kirby gains the Whip ability by inhalingWhippy. He uses it to defeat aBabut who suddenly attacked him andMeta Knight. As he tries to run away from a boulder trap Kirby accidentally set off, he accidentally ejects Whippy in the process, losing the copy ability.

Trivia[edit]

  • The Whip ability appears to be a reference to the action-adventure film heroIndiana Jones, who wears a similar fedora to Whip Kirby and uses a bullwhip during many of his adventures. The Japanese description of the ability inKirby: Triple Deluxe seems to further imply this, as its last sentence readsおたからもとめて たびに出て、ぼうけんかつげき まくあけだ! (Embark on a journey in search of treasure, the action-adventure film begins!)
