| “ | This machine has great acceleration but poor top speed. You can get healthy boosts of speed on it by using the rails and the jumps along the course! | ” | — Kirby Air Ride North American instruction booklet, page 35 |
TheWheelie Scooter is a bike-typeAir Ride Machine that appears inKirby Air Ride andKirby Air Riders. This vehicle is the most agile of the bike-type machines, notable for its exceptional handling and turning ability. Just like theWheelie Bike andRex Wheelie, it is based on theWheelie enemy.
Appearance[edit]
This vehicle's basic body is that of a single, somewhat large wheel with a rounded black tire. On each side where a hub would normally be, there is instead a large, relaxed brown eye with a chrome eyelid. Positioned on the top half of the wheel is a pale green, matte covering with tan accents, and a brown leather cushion upon which the rider sits. On the front of this covering are a pair of handlebars gripped by the rider, and a small yellow headlight. Extending out from the rear of the right-hand side of the covering is one small gray exhaust pipe, which leaks out smoky gray exhaust while the vehicle is moving. The exhaust stops completely when the bike is stationary or charging, but spikes for a moment after boosting. Adjacent the exhaust pipe is a single red taillight, which lights up when the vehicle ischarging. Where theRex Wheelie appears to be based on a powerful motorcycle, the Wheelie Scooter appears to be based upon a smaller moped.
InKirby Air Riders, the Wheelie Scooter retains a mostly similar appearance, though it is more of a mint green than it was before. The tan accents across the vehicle are now golden, with a new semi-circular gold plate added on the front of its covering. The eyes are more detailed here, too, taking on a more robotic design. The exhaust pipe is now black and more rectangular. The taillight of the Wheelie Scooter still lights up when it is charging, but now also emits a trail of red while it does so. As for the exhaust's fumes, they are darker in color. After a boost charge (or use of aDash Panel), the pipe expels a thin stream of fire, and a fiery red trail can be observed temporarily beneath the wheel of the Wheelie Scooter.

Mechanics[edit]
The bike's most standout features are shared with all bikes—Wheelie Bike,Rex Wheelie, andWheelie Bike Dedede Custom. Since it relies on a wheel to propel itself, it does not float above the ground as star-type machines do. This renders it more susceptible to ground hazards such as the magma inMagma Flows or the snow inFrozen Hillside, decelerating and messing with its handling more than it would stars. However, it also gains the aid ofDash Panels and activatesswitches without the need to touch the ground with a charge. As with all bikes, it does not glide in the typical sense, but instead jumps. That is, it gains a sudden increase of speed when going airborne—much more so than its fellow bike-type machines—but cannot steer or alter its trajectory to the point almost all star-type machines can.
Aside from its unique bike properties, the Wheelie Scooter is renowned for being the single highest glider, or jumper, in the entire game, barring the legendaryDragoon. In addition, it can also fly quite far, but is outdone in that area by at least theWinged Star. Aside from this, it has excellent turning capability, and can even do rapid U-turns by charging without losing much momentum. Although it gains little boost from doing so, it can charge extremely fast. The vehicle also has superb acceleration.
Despite its impressive maneuverability, the Scooter has a low top speed of a mere 13.12 mph (21.12 km/h). In addition, it has very low HP, as well as very low offensive and defensive capabilities. Finally, it is also very lightweight, and thus can be knocked around easily. Despite this, its excellent boosting capabilities can be utilized to gain great speed if maneuvered properly. An exploit involving quick-spinning while charging on walls has been utilized inspeedrunning to attain the best times on all courses save forMagma Flows, which is still dominated by theRocket Star.
How to unlock[edit]
To unlock this machine for use inAir Ride, the player must begin the final lap of any course in 4th, but end up finishing in 1st. InCity Trial, the Wheelie Scooter can occasionally be found randomly throughout the city and be mounted like most other air ride machines. It is always available inFree Run as well.
Kirby Air Riders[edit]

InKirby Air Riders, the Wheelie Scooter returns and can be used in all modes. It retains its excellent turning and grip, with very quick acceleration to boot. Its top speed is improved, as on the ground it now travels at 25 mph (41 km/h) withKirby on smooth, flat terrain. Like the other Bike-type machines, the Wheelie Scooter is incapable of gliding, though its lower weight does make it fall slower than its contemporaries. The biggest change to the Wheelie Scooter, however, is that its jump height has been drastically reduced. Instead of being able to jump extremely high, it now gets jumps off of ramps at a high horizontal speed. The exact speed it leaves a ramp depends a fair deal on the angle of the ramp. It also falls at speeds up to 41 mph (66 km/h) with Kirby. As a bike, its speed is impacted more than many other vehicles by the terrain it is traversing on due to it being ground-based. As in the previous game, the Wheelie Scooter is highly fragile, with low HP, defense, and offense stats. It can also still activatedash panels automatically by riding over them, though this is no longer a property unique to bikes.
InAir Ride, this machine excels at courses that contain numerous tight turns, such asMount Amberfalls andMachine Passage. Due to how sharp it turns and the speed it charges up at, it is advisable to take turns on the Wheelie Scooter far later than a rider normally would with any other vehicle, as to avoid accidentally bumping into a wall or slowing oneself down excessively. This machine also synergizes well with riders that have low grip and high top speed (such asKing Dedede), as its handling will counteract that weakness. As forCity Trial, its handling and speed make it an excellent choice for early-gamePatch collection. It can also do well in certainStadiums, particularly those that benefits high controllability (such asGourmet Race andButton Rush). However, it can be hard to hold onto during the late game, as it is quite weak and therefore easy to destroy on heavier machines such as theBattle Chariot. Likewise, combat-centric Stadiums likeDustup Derby should be avoided, as should any that focus on gliding. One should also be careful when picking up Turn Patches, as having too many can make the turning of this machine hypersensitive and difficult to handle as a result.
How to unlock[edit]
The Wheelie Scooter must be unlocked through one of two methods. It can be obtained via theChecklist or purchased in theMiles Shop. In the Miles Shop, each Wheelie Scooter costs 2,800Miles. Any additional copies obtained can be modified in theMy Machine mode.
