TheWheelie Bike is a bike-typeAir Ride Machine that appears inKirby Air Ride andKirby Air Riders. This vehicle has the most basic design of the bike-type machines, and is based on aWheelie enemy, particularly the variety ridden when using theWheelie Rider inKirby Super Star.
Appearance[edit]
This vehicle's basic body is that of a single large wheel with a rounded black tire. On each side where a hub would normally be, there is instead a massive, angry-looking eye with a gold eyelid. Positioned on the top half of the wheel is a red, matte covering with gray and silver accents, upon which the rider sits. On the front of this covering are a pair of handlebars gripped by the rider. Extending out from the rear of the covering are four silver exhaust pipes - two on each side - which pump out smoky gray exhaust while the vehicle is moving. The exhaust stops completely when the bike is stationary or charging, but spikes for a moment afterboosting. Between the four exhaust pipes is a single red taillight, which lights up when the vehicle is charging.
InKirby Air Riders, the Wheelie Bike takes on a similar appearance but is noticeably more mechanical in texture. The exhaust pipes are glossier than in the previous game, and additional metallic detail can be observed on the side of the "seat" where the rider sits. The most substantial change is to its eyes, as they now take on an appearance somewhat akin to a camera lens. The taillight is also slightly different in shape, and now emits a red trail when the machine is charging. Behind the eye, a mechanical structure of pipes can be observed. The fumes it emits are now darker in color, and when it receives a boost (either from a boost charge or aDash Panel), the exhaust pipes expel flames temporarily. While doing so, a red-hot trail can also be observed under the wheel.

Mechanics[edit]
The bike's most standout features are shared with all bikes (Rex Wheelie,Wheelie Scooter, and theWheelie Bike Dedede Custom). Since it relies on a wheel to propel itself, it does not float above the ground as stars do. This renders it more susceptible to ground hazards such as the magma inMagma Flows or the snow inFrozen Hillside, decelerating and messing with its handling more than it would stars. However, it also gains the aid ofDash Panels and activatesswitches without the need to touch the ground with a charge. As with all bikes, it does not glide in the typical sense, but instead jumps to gain a sudden increase of speed when going airborne, but cannot steer or alter its trajectory to the point almost all stars can.
Aside from its unique bike properties, the Wheelie Bike is fairly average, and balanced in its statistics, and is comparable in most applicable ways to the standardWarp Star. However, it doesn't handle quite as easily, but it does accelerate slightly faster and has a slightly higher top speed of 26.83 mph (43.18 km/h).
How to unlock[edit]
To unlock this machine for use inAir Ride, the player must race on all eight courses available from the beginning of the game, excluding theadditional unlockable course.
InCity Trial, the Wheelie Bike can occasionally be found randomly throughout the city and be mounted like most other air ride machines. It is always available inFree Run as well.
Kirby Air Riders[edit]
| “ | Races ahead on a single wheel. An interesting design compared to star-type machines. | ” | — Flavor text fromKirby Air Riders. |

InKirby Air Riders, the Wheelie Bike reappears as one of the Air Ride Machines that can be used inAir Ride,Top Ride,City Trial, andRoad Trip. It functions similarly to the original game, with high grip, solid turning, and fair acceleration. Due to its grounded nature, its speed is affected by the terrain it traverses more than most other machines in the game. Its stats are generally well rounded, similar to theWarp Star, though it boasts more weight and HP. WithKirby, it can reach a grounded top speed of 26 mph (42 km/h) on flat and smooth terrain. It cannot glide at all, instead jumping off of ramps. The exact speed boost the Bike can get from this varies depending in large part on the inclination of said ramp. As Kirby, it can also reach an aerial top speed while falling of 46 mph (75 km/h). It still activatesDash Panels andswitches automatically, although the former now applies to every machine and the latter is shared with Chariot-type machines.
The Wheelie Bike is well suited for many courses inAir Ride, as its reasonable turning, solid top speed, and good acceleration allow it to fair well on many tracks. Those with a fair amount of turns often benefit this machine (such asMount Amberfalls). It is worth noting that terrain will influence its performance more than a Star-type vehicle, so it is best to refrain from traversing rough ground. InCity Trial, it can perform reasonably well in mostStadiums due to its generalist nature, though it of course will almost always lose gliding competitions. That said,Glide Patches are not useless on this machine, as they allow it to jump higher when it leaves ramps. It is also reasonably good for stat collection and traversal aroundSkyah, and has decent survivability due to its HP.
How to unlock[edit]
The Wheelie Bike can be obtained via either theChecklist or via theMiles Shop, where one costs 3,050Miles. Obtaining an additional Wheelie Bike will allow it to be customized inMy Machine.
- City Trial: Field - Swap to 3 different kinds of machines in a single match
- Road Trip - Clear City Trial challenges 3 times
For Road Trip, the Wheelie Bike must be unlocked separately to be used. It can be obtained either by jumping onto it on the road, or via purchase in a shop if it was missed. A Wheelie Bike can be found inFull-Throttle Racetrack orSunset Shoreline.
