"Welcome Your New Overlord"[2] is a musical piece composed byJun Ishikawa[1] and serves as the battle theme ofMagolor'sfirst battle inKirby's Return to Dream Land.

Composition[edit]

Traitor Magolor makes an intimidating entrance as the new overlord.

"Welcome Your New Overlord" is an energetic fast-paced track, predominantly featuring synthesized instruments, in contrast to its sister track, "C-R-O-W-N-E-D", which is slower-paced and more orchestrated. Its composition bears similarities to some past Kirby tracks, such as "Vs. Dark Matter" and "Squeak Squad Theme".

Its intro is fairly slow compared to the rest of the track, with a notable absence of percussion apart from a gong at the start, until it returns and intensifies to conclude the intro. Following this, eight bars establish the main melody, which is repeated with different instruments and percussion, as well with an addition of a countermelody, for the following eight bars. The melody then completely changes for the next sixteen bars, which follow a similar structure of the previous sixteen: eight bars establish a new melody, which is followed by eight bars of this melody with different instruments. The track then has a small transition section of four bars, followed by a much lighter section, with way less instruments than previous ones, backed up by quieter percussion and featuring a piano playing a very simple melody. A synth flirts for a couple notes during the first eight bars, until it eventually joins the piano melody for the last six bars of this section. The track then has yet another short transition section of two bars to lead up for its final section, the climax of the track, that brings back the instruments of previous sections and is led by an electric guitar playing a melody full of long notes. It's accompanied by a countermelody that eventually takes over after the guitar stops playing, during the last bars of the track, which leads up to its loop.

"Welcome Your New Overlord" from "Last Battle" from theKirby Wii Music Selection.

In theKirby Wii Music Selection CD, the bonus trackボーナストラック:サイゴノタタカイ (Bonus Track: Last Battle) is a medley of themes related to the final battle against Magolor, and "Welcome Your New Overlord" is among them. This arrangement features the track in a more orchestrated fashion.

Etymology[edit]

"Welcome Your New Overlord" is part of Magolor's dialogue in theTheater movie "Let Me Explain Everything": "Prepare to bow, Popstar! Welcome your new overlord!" This is also true of the original Japanese name "支配しはいしてアゲルヨォ".[3] As such, much like the rest of Magolor's dialogue in the Japanese version of the games he appears in, it is written with some words inkatakana where one would normally usehiragana. In this case specifically, "アゲルヨォ" is used instead of "あげるよぉ".

The Japanese name can have multiple translations to English, such as "Bow Down to Me", "Fall Under My Rule", or "I Will Rule Over You". The name "Under My Control" was the most commonly-used English translation for the Japanese title untilKirby's Return to Dream Land Deluxe confirmed its official English name.

All other foreign language translations of the name also directly quote Magolor's dialogue at the end of the same cutscene, except for the Latin American and European Spanish versions, which instead simply translate the English name.

Magolor at the end of the cutscene instead says "¡Arrodíllate ante mí, planeta Pop! ¡Conoce a tu amo y señor!" (Kneel before me, Planet Pop! Meet your new lord and master!) in the Latin American Spanish version, and "¡Planeta Pop, prepárate para rendir pleitesía a tu amo y señor!" (Planet Pop, prepare to bow to your lord and master!) in the European Spanish version.
