- This article is about theCopy Ability. For the environmental feature, seeWater (environment). For the course inTop Ride, seeWater (course).
Water is aCopy Ability which makes its first game appearance inKirby's Return to Dream Land, obtained by swallowing water-related enemies. This ability gives Kirby a hat made of water, similar to other elemental abilities likeFire,Ice, andTornado. Water Kirby can surf on a form of water he creates, thus being able to easily traverse through lava. He can also neutralize lava blocks (though not lava itself) using the ability, making it a requirement to access some areas andEnergy Spheres. Kirby can also spit water downwards and hover, destroying enemies along the way, as well as shoot water upwards. In addition, Water Kirby has a more powerfulWater Gun, blowing out three water pulses rather than one.

Kirby's Return to Dream Land /Kirby's Return to Dream Land Deluxe[edit]
Although previously appearing inKirby: Right Back at Ya! and the canceledKirby for Nintendo GameCube, Water properly debuted as an ability inKirby's Return to Dream Land and also appears in its remake,Kirby's Return to Dream Land Deluxe. Kirby can get this ability chiefly by swallowingWater Galbo,Pluid orWater Galboros, though a few other sources exist as well. The main strength of Water is allowing Kirby to surf quickly over his foes, traverse fiery areas more safely, and gain an enhancedWater Gun underwater.
InKirby's Return to Dream Land Deluxe, various changes were made to the ability to match how it functions inKirby Star Allies, such as being able to cause Kirby's Geyser to rise higher by mashing the attack button.
One of theChallenge Stages revolves around the Water Ability.

Kirby Star Allies[edit]

After being absent from bothKirby: Triple Deluxe andKirby: Planet Robobot, Water returns in this title. The main enemy who provides this ability isDriblee, who also represents the ability as itsFriend. It can be used in a number ofFriend Abilities includingSplash Curling andIcicle Lance. It also provides theSplash element to many other abilities. Starting from this game onward, Kirby can now cause his Geyser to rise higher by mashing the B button. The input for Rainbow Rain was also changed so that it is not necessary to hold the down input before being able to use the move.

Kirby Fighters 2[edit]
Water returns inKirby Fighters 2 as a selectable ability for Kirby. It is unlocked after attainingFighters Rank 30. Its moveset is largely the same as inKirby Star Allies, albeit with the omission of the "Enhanced Water Gun" move due to the lack of bodies of water in all of the game'sBattle Stages. Some moves are also adjusted to better accommodate fighting other players, most notably hitting an opponent during Surf drags the opponent with Kirby rather than Kirby simply rebounding off.
For more precise competitive-oriented information on the Water ability inKirby Fighters 2, seeMizuumi Wiki's page.

Other appearances[edit]
Water was intended to appear in the canceledKirby for Nintendo GameCube game, which would have marked its first game appearance. Its design in the game resembled theKirby: Right Back at Ya! one a lot more than the laterKirby's Return to Dream Land design. Its moveset differed from the ability's final moveset, as the only attack that can be seen in any known footage is an attack where Kirby would blow bubbles, which would not make it toKirby's Return to Dream Land.

| “ | It is Water Kirby! | ” | — Meta Knight, inAir-Ride-in-Style - Part II |
Water actually first appeared as a Copy Ability inKirby: Right Back at Ya!. It makes a single appearance in the episodeAir-Ride-in-Style - Part II as the result of it being one of the winners in the Japan-onlyKirby of the Stars: New Ability Contest (being submitted by Takahiro Tonoe from Aichi prefecture). However, it is only used in a dream sequence, making itscanonicity questionable. Kirby gains this ability by inhaling large amounts of water from the ocean.
Water Kirby in the anime bears a somewhat different design to his later appearance in the games. He has a slightly different crown and his body has a blue, translucent, water-like texture. Despite this, the ability functions largely the same as it would later, as Kirby uses spouts of water from his mouth to attack. Notably, the ability allows him to use theWater Gun outside of water in this instance.
