Plot synopsis[edit]

The Cappies get to buying King Dedede's Waddle Dees from vending machines.

The episode begins in theCastle Dedede throne room, whereKing Dedede is being told by theN.M.E. Sales Guy that he cannot buy any more monsters due to his immense unpaid bill toNight Mare Enterprises. After showing him the total, the Sales Guy recommends to Dedede that he sell off some of his assets in order to bring it down. After receiving a cup of tea from hisWaddle Dees that is too hot, and then getting hosed by them when he cries that word out, he andEscargoon get the idea to sell the Waddle Dees off. The Sales Guy helps them by sending a vending machine designed to hold Waddle Dees through theMonster Delivery System. Later on, theCappies notice this vending machine filled with Waddle Dees labeled "COLD", "NORMAL", and "HOT" placed in the middle of theCappy Town plaza. It is later shown that there are several scattered throughout the town, and the Cappies start to gather around them.Mayor Len decides he will buy a "hot" one, and after the Waddle Dee is dispensed, it proceeds to grabTuggle's broom and show off its tricks. Mayor Len is pleased with the Waddle Dee's abilities, and decides to take it home, which surprises the others.

After Mayor Len take the Waddle Dee home, it proceeds to do all of the chores around the villa, making the house look cleaner than it ever has before. The other Cappies notice this, and rush to get their own Waddle Dee servants. After observing this,Tokkori heads over toTiff and tells her about the situation. At that moment, a commercial plays onChannel DDD promoting the Waddle Dees' sale, which prompts Tiff to rush off whileTuff follows. Meanwhile, the Waddle Dees start getting put to work in the various Cappy businesses, where they perform their tasks satisfactorily. In return, the Cappies treat their Waddle Dees well, giving them free food and hospitality. Tiff catches the Cappies in line to buy more Waddle Dees, and tries to berate them for taking advantage of the little guys, but those in line retort by correctly pointing out that the Waddle Dees are better off with them than with King Dedede. That night, as the Waddle Dees continue working, King Dedede and Escargoon prepare to sell more, but Tiff tries to run in and berate them for selling the Waddle Dees like slaves. Despite this, nobody pays her any mind, as even the Waddle Dees are on board with this idea.

King Dedede tries to survive without his Waddle Dees, while Tiff and Captain Waddle Doo comment on the absurdity of his situation.

Later in the night, King Dedede and Escargoon open up the vending machines to collect the revenue, but find all of them empty. Back at the castle, the N.M.E. Sales Guy explains that all of the money was transferred directly to N.M.E., and will continue to do so until the debt is paid off in full. King Dedede decides that he will need to sell every last Waddle Dee if he wants to see even a single scrap of money, and accelerates the process. As this happens, he and Escargoon spotKirby wandering around the castle, and decide to capture him using a shortcake slice as bait. They then paint him to resemble a Waddle Dee and toss him into one of the vending machines. Later on, Kirby is purchased by Mayor Len, who is none-the-wiser. The next day, Tiff and Tuff head toKirby's House to ask Tokkori where Kirby is, but Tokkori has no clue. Meanwhile, King Dedede and Escargoon go searching the castle for any remaining Waddle Dees, but find their quarters completely empty.Captain Waddle Doo then passes by them with a small sack over his arm, and confirms that all of the Waddle Dees are gone, quitting his job because he has nobody to order around anymore. As King Dedede realizes the trouble he's in, Escargoon quietly slips away in order to avoid being tasked with doing everything the Waddle Dees used to do.

King Dedede regains his Waddle Dees, but loses his chance to eat the Dyna Chick.

Back in town, Tiff and Tuff try looking for Kirby, but all they see are Waddle Dees. Meanwhile, Kirby has been put to work herding the sheep along with other Waddle Dees, and Tiff and Tuff fail to spot him in there. Back at the castle, silence starts to settle in as chores are left undone, and King Dedede desperately calls out for anyone to do his bidding, but the few remaining members of the court are wisely hiding from him. Meanwhile,Meta Knight and his apprentices are searching the castle for Kirby on Tiff's behalf, but cannot find him. After another day passes, King Dedede becomes haggard and desperate, and leaves the castle to find anyone who will take care of him. He wanders to Mayor Len's villa that night holding a cup and asking if the mayor will buy a pencil from him. After refusing this, King Dedede begs Mayor Len to give back some of the Waddle Dees, but he refuses again, and slams the door on him. After being rejected by everyone else in town, King Dedede wanders off and disappears into the night. The next morning, as Tiff and Tuff continue looking for Kirby, they and the other Cappies spot King Dedede wandering around town looking for anything to eat and comment on his situation, though they do not help him. King Dedede later wanders into a turnip patch and digs one up to eat, proclaiming that he will "never go hungry no more!"

As Tiff and Waddle Doo comment on the situation,Dyna Chick wanders into the scene, and King Dedede sees the chick as a walking roasted chicken and tries to eat it. At that moment,Dyna Blade shows up and proceeds to attack King Dedede, who tries desperately to get away with the chick. Seeing the King in trouble, Waddle Doo raises his sword and calls all of the Waddle Dees to help. Somehow hearing this from across the kingdom, all of the Waddle Dees along with Kirby abandon their jobs and rally to Waddle Doo. As King Dedede continues to try and abscond with the chick, the Waddle Dees approach with spears in hand, but are blown away by Dyna Blade's flapping. Tiff spots Kirby in the crowd of Waddle Dees and calls for theWarp Star so he can help fix this situation. Once Kirby hops on his Warp Star, he grabs the chick and heads for Dyna Blade's nest, while King Dedede gets grabbed by Dyna Blade. As they fly by, many of the Waddle Dees grab onto King Dedede to try to pull him away from the giant bird's clutches, but get carried away in a chain formation. Once they arrive at the nest and the chick is secured, Dyna Blade drops King Dedede and he is saved from the fall by the Waddle Dees, who form an impromptu bungee cord for him. Later on, the Waddle Dees return to work at Castle Dedede and resume their chores, as King Dedede relaxes. However, to punish him for his shortsightedness, King Dedede is now forced to get his own tea by buying it from the vending machines previously used to house the Waddle Dees. The episode ends as Tiff, Tuff, and Kirby laugh at Dedede.

Differences between versions[edit]

Japanese-exclusive scene where the Waddle Dees are working at Samo's bar.
  • In the Japanese version, there are a few extra scenes of the Waddle Dees working for some of the other characters, including Professor Curio and Samo.
  • In the Italian version, the English text on the vending machines is removed.

Dialogue differences[edit]

  • In the Japanese version, Tokkori jokes to Tiff that if she is so concerned about Kirby's whereabouts, she should put a leash on him.
  • In the Japanese version, as King Dedede rants about who will do the chores now that the Waddle Dees are gone, he mentions "changing the diapers".
  • In the Japanese version, when Escargoon and the other court members are ignoring King Dedede, there is no mention from Meta Knight and his soldiers that they are looking for Kirby. Instead, they agree with Escargoon that they should hide from Dedede.
  • In the Japanese version, King Dedede solicits the Cappies begging for food, rather than begging them to give back his Waddle Dees or buy pencils.

Music differences[edit]

  • In the Japanese version, a minor-key version of theInvincible Candy jingle plays during the scenes where the Waddle Dees begin work in Cappy Town.
  • In the Japanese version, an arrangement of theGourmet Race opening movie theme plays while Tiff and Tuff are looking for Kirby among the Waddle Dees.
  • In the Japanese version, an arrangement ofA New Wind for Tomorrow plays when King Dedede resolves to never go hungry again in the field.

Trivia[edit]

  • The first Waddle Dee purchased uses Tuggle's broom to float upward like a helicopter for a moment. This may be a precursor to theWaddle Copter technique which is usable byBandana Waddle Dee starting fromKirby's Return to Dream Land.
  • During theChannel DDD commercial advertising the Waddle Dee dispensers, a row of five Waddle Dees are shown wearing (from left to right) the hats of Chef Kawasaki, Gus, Chief Bookem, Melman, and Tuggle.
  • This episode marks the first time in the show that the interior of Melman's post office is seen.
  • Kirby being painted as a Waddle Dee is a reference to the earlier episodePink-Collar Blues, where he was disguised as a Waddle Dee.
  • The scene where King Dedede eats the turnip and cries out that he will never go hungry again is a reference toGone with the Wind.
