"VS Sphere Doomer" is a mid-boss theme that debuted inKirby's Return to Dream Land. It is a fast-paced, short track primarily associated with theSphere Doomers from said game, and it is composed byJun Ishikawa.

Composition[edit]

Usually, battlingSphere Doomers doesn't take long, just as listening to the entire song is.

"VS Sphere Doomer" is a relatively short but frantic-sounding track in the key of E minor. It is composed in 5/4 time signature with 175 beats per minute. The song features a fast drumbeat with an underlying chaotic-sounding synth resembling the one that plays throughout thetheme music for Miracle Matter. The first part of the melody is primarily played by a low-pitched synth and whistle, and the last part of the song is played primarily by a trumpet before reaching the looping point of the song. The time signature and style of the song greatly resembleMeta Knight's battle theme fromKirby Super Star, which was also composed by Jun Ishikawa.

Game appearances[edit]

Kirby's Return to Dream Land[edit]

"VS Sphere Doomer" first appears inKirby's Return to Dream Land, serving as themid-boss theme for allSphere Doomer battles in the game, even inThe Arena andThe True Arena. It can also be found as Track 9 in theSound Test.

Left unused in the game files is a variation of "VS Sphere Doomer" in a style resembling the soundtrack ofKirby games on theGame Boy Advance andKirby: Squeak Squad, internally namedKbyW_BOSS_TYU_M_2, compared to the final version'sKBYW_BOSS_TYU_M.

The "VS Sphere Doomer" remix fromSuper Kirby Clash.

TheTeam Kirby Clash Deluxe rearrangement of "VS Sphere Doomer" also appears inSuper Kirby Clash, although somewhat remixed to feature more orchestral-sounding layers and techno-sounding instruments. It also features an altered intro featuring mixed portions of the song. It is still used in most encounters againstGreater Doomer, however, its corresponding Toughest-ranked quests replace the track with a remix of "Grand Doomer".

Kirby's Return to Dream Land Deluxe[edit]

InKirby's Return to Dream Land Deluxe, a remastered version of "VS Sphere Doomer" is used for allSphere Doomer battles inStory Mode,Extra Mode,The Arena andThe True Arena. It can also be found as Track 9 in theJukebox.

Two new arrangements of "VS Sphere Doomer" are also present inMagolor Epilogue: The Interdimensional Traveler, both rearranged byYuki Shimooka[1]. The first arrangement, "VS Darpa-Dippa-Dupas", is used in the various enemy ambushes at the end of most stages in this mode. It is a chaotic-sounding rearrangement of the original song that plays at 171 beats per minute, while maintaining a time signature of 5/4. The song also features a smaller leitmotif from "Judgment of the Malus Pumila", which switches the song's time signature to 4/4 to compensate. The final part of the song fluctuates between time signatures of 8/4 to 10/4, while featuring electronic wind-up sounds. This variation can also be found in the Jukebox as Track 172 after clearing Magolor Epilogue.

The second arrangement, "VS Flock of Doomers", is an extended version of the previous theme that plays in the boss battle against theRampaging Doomers. It notably features the short second part of "VS Sphere Doomer", now extended and primarily played by both piano and violin, then featuring a more disorderly arrangement of the first part that plays at 9/4 time signature. This arrangement can also be found in the Jukebox as Track 182.
