Tourist Trap is the 48th (43rd in the 4Kids broadcast) episode of theKirby: Right Back at Ya! series. In this episode,King Dedede invites a number of tourists from another world to come visitDream Land so that his kingdom can get a good rating fromNight Mare Enterprises' travel guide and make Dedede lots of money. Despite his efforts, however, the tourists are not satisfied with the trip, and make a mess of the place in the process. To spice up the tour, King Dedede orders themonsterFlame Feeder to excite the tourists and defeatKirby in the process. At theBooma-Dooma Volcano, King Dedede sends the monster to attack Kirby, who fails in his attempt to use theFireCopy Ability on the monster. Seeing this,Tiff,Tuff, and the tourists help Kirby by throwing him their ice so he can gain theIce ability and defeat the monster that way. After Flame Feeder is defeated and the tourists leave, they give King Dedede a scathing review of his tour, and Dream Land is denied a good rating, sparing it from further vandalism.

Plot synopsis[edit]
The episode begins withKirby playing a soccer game withTuff and theCappy children whileTiff reads under a nearby tree. Tuff kicks the ball into the long grass, and Kirby goes in to retrieve it. After finding the ball, Kirby is flash-photographed several times by strange visitors wearing vacationer's clothes.Tiff runs in to berate them but they move on without notice. She then finds a flyer one of them dropped promotingDream Land as a tourist attraction. Meanwhile inCappy Town, similar tourists can be seen everywhere obstructing the flow of the town's traffic. Tiff and Tuff soon see thatKing Dedede andEscargoon are operating a tour bus to ferry these strangers around the countryside. Tiff andMayor Len berate the King for bypassing the consent of the town, but they are predictably brushed off. Escargoon then calls the tourists in and announces the schedule, butCaptain Waddle Doo translates the tourists' language and tells Escargoon they want to eat first.
To meet the needs of the tourists,Chef Kawasaki is roped in to prepare the food. The tourists end up disliking it to the point where they are gagging out in the streets, and Kirby helps himself to the leftovers. The tour bus then leaves without paying for the meal and heads towardProfessor Curio's collection. Despite Curio's insistence that his shop is not a museum, King Dedede and Escargoon let the tourists in to mishandle the relics, and Kirby carelessly joins in wrecking the place with them. After antagonizingMabel at her fortune parlor, the tourists head out of town toward their next destination, taking Kirby and Tuff with them and leaving a massive pile of garbage in their wake. Looking at the mess, Tiff comments on it, and then realizes that Kirby is not around. While the tour bus heads for the beach, King Dedede reveals that the reason for bringing these tourists along is to giveDream Land a good rating for theNight Mare Enterprises travel guide. At their beach stop,Kine appears in the water and King Dedede attempts to impress the crowd by tossing Kirby out there for the sunfish to catch, but Kine just ends up making small talk with Kirby instead, leading the tourists to become angry. They move on to the next stop shortly thereafter, and leave Kirby behind.
Next up, the tourists are taken toDyna Blade's Nest to seeDyna Blade andher chick. Kirby manages somehow to catch up with them as the tourists antagonize the chick with their cameras. Dyna Blade rushes in to attack them, and they attempt to get away in the bus, but are instead toppled down the cliff. After several spins, the bus manages to land upright on the cliffside, but the brakes are broken, leading it to careen off a cliff and fall for a long way into the woods. Despite all the tumult, Kirby and the tourists are pleased with this outcome, thinking it to be an intentional thrill ride. Later on atCastle Dedede, the tourists are treated to a royal banquet and are given the next day's schedule. The tourists then complain loudly about the relative lack of excitement on their trip, leading King Dedede to nearly lose his temper. He directs them to take any room they like in the castle to sleep, forcing Tiff and her family to camp out in the courtyard for the night, though still bothered by tourists.
Meanwhile, King Dedede pleads with N.M.E. to send him amonster to make the tour more exciting. Through theMonster Delivery System comesFlame Feeder: a small round gelatinous egg with a burning fire inside. TheN.M.E. Sales Guy explains that Flame Feeder will become more powerful if it absorbs fire and directs them to use it on Kirby. As King Dedede heads off to bed, he soon sees that his room has been taken up by Kirby and the tourist kids, who continually play rough all night and prevent Dedede from sleeping. The next morning, due to his fatigue, he hands responsibility for the tour off to Tiff and Tuff, who protest being given this job. However, they soon get an idea to sabotage the tour by making it boring so the tourists will not want to come back to Dream Land. They begin the tour by heading toKabu Canyon, where the tourists deface the great sage using markers. On the road to the next stop, Tiff decides to skip the visit toWhispy Woods for the tree's safety and head to theBooma-Dooma Volcano instead. At the volcano, while Tiff tries to control the crowd, King Dedede and Escargoon slink away and set off some fireworks they had brought along. While doing this, they toss Flame Feeder into the main caldera of the volcano, where it absorbs the heat from the lava and transforms into a giant magmatic jellyfish.
Flame Feeder then proceeds to attack all of the tourists by lobbing fireballs at them. Kirby steps in to defend them byinhaling one of the fireballs and gaining theFireCopy Ability. Tiff then calls for theWarp Star to help Kirby fight it. Kirby attempts to use his fire breath on Flame Feeder, but it only causes the monster to grow in size, and Kirby is soon batted away. Seeing this, Tiff and Tuff decide to throw Kirby ice from their thermoses but it is not enough to withstand the volcano's heat. They direct the tourists to help Kirby by throwing their ice at him, and he manages to inhale enough to gain theIce ability. Using this ability, Kirby quickly defeats Flame Feeder by breathing ice on it until it shrinks to a small size, then inhaling it and spitting it out as inert ice chunks which bury King Dedede and Escargoon. Later, at the castle, King Dedede receives the feedback from the tourists that they did not enjoy the tour or the food overall, and particularly did not like King Dedede, but enjoyed spending time with Kirby. Despite this feedback, King Dedede insists on having another tour group, but the N.M.E. Sales Guy flat-out rejects them. The episode ends as Tiff, Tuff, and Kirby celebrate this news.
Differences between versions[edit]
- In the Japanese version, Dedede's tour flyers have English text on them, but this text is scrubbed from the international versions.
- In the Japanese version, there is a extra small scene in Cappy Town where Gangu tries to sell the tourists novelty items.
- In the Japanese version, a minor-key version of "Invincible Candy" plays during the tour of Cappy Town.
- In the Japanese version, there is an extra scene during the Cappy Town tour where the tourists have their photo taken withDoron in the jail cell.
Dialogue differences[edit]
- The nature of the tourists' gibberish language is different between both versions.
- In the Japanese version, Professor Curio makes a comment relating to his status as a "middle-aged bachelor" during his scene.
- In the Japanese version, Mayor Len comments that the tourism will improve the town's economy, rather than suggesting that Kirby will inhale the garbage left behind.
- In the Japanese version,Sir Ebrum andLady Like comment that they are fine with sleeping in a tent if the tourism makes them famous.
Trivia[edit]
- The opening shot and scenario of this episode is almost an exact copy of the opening forScare Tactics - Part I.
- The scene where Kirby helps himself to the leftovers atKawasaki's is lifted directly fromA Recipe for Disaster, and includes a partially-obscuredChef Shiitake handing plates to Kirby after tasting them.
- Near the end of the episode, Tiff calls theWarp Star from Kabu, and during the scene, Kabu appears to be free from graffiti, despite the damage the tourists did mere moments ago.
