Top Ride is a game mode that appears inKirby Air Ride andKirby Air Riders. It is considerably simpler thanAir Ride orCity Trial, being a short racing game set with an overhead perspective on small courses. Unlike the other two modes, there is no split-screen, instead allowing all players to see their racers on a single screen. As a result, inKirby Air Ride, this is the only mode that is not playable over LAN play.

Kirby Air Ride[edit]

Top Ride debuts inKirby Air Ride as one of the three main modes of the game. It can be played by up to four players like all other modes. In Top Ride,Copy Abilities are not present, and instead items appear on the courses and can be picked up for use.

Control is similar to the other two modes, but with some key aspects removed to match the simplicity of the courses. The control stick is used to steer Kirby's machine and performQuick Spins, while the A button is used to charge, thenBoost and use certain items. There is noGliding orInhaling.

Machines[edit]

InKirby Air Ride, only twoAir Ride Machines can be used:

Free StarThe Free Star is a machine that turns in the direction the control stick is faced, no matter what direction it is facing. This is the default machine.
Steer StarThe Steer Star is a machine that turns only when the left and right directions get pushed on the control stick, like a normal star in Air Ride or City Trial.

CPUs can be set to use either machine, but this will not affect their performance in any fashion.

There are seven courses to play in this mode, all available at the start. They are as follows:

Sky6A clockwise course consisting of two circular islands connected by thin bridges. The left island can be made to move by pressing a knob, while the larger right one spins in either direction based on the wind.
Fire6A clockwise course on a very wavy path. Spewing vents and erupting craters can be found here.
Light6A counterclockwise course on a hexagonal board in deep space. Three light rails turn on and off at random, which can be used as shortcuts.
Water5A counterclockwise course set on a rocky shoreline, with two rivers cutting through. The rolling ocean waves and waterfalls can slow down racers, with the latter also removing items.
Metal5A counterclockwise course set in a machine-laden area. Gadgets can be activated and gears made to spin by means of racer interaction.

There are a total of 21 different items that can be used in Top Ride. These items are unique to this mode, though three of them need to first be unlocked by meeting objectives in theChecklist. They are as follows:

Modes and Settings[edit]

There are three primary modes in Top Ride. They are as follows:

  • Top Ride - Play the courses normally, with human opponents orCPU.
  • Free Run - Play each course solo with no obstacles or items.
  • Time Attack - Play 5 laps solo with obstacles and specific items dropping.

Additionally, there are a number of settings that can be changed when playing the standard Top Ride mode. These are as follows:

  • Laps - Change the number of laps that are ran (1 - 99).
  • Items - Change the frequency of item drops (unlockable in Checklist). Options are "None", "Few", "Normal", and "Many".
  • Speed Help - Adjust the speed boost of racers who fall behind.
  • Camera - Change the camera to zoom in based on racer position, or stay fixed.
  • Game Tempo - Change the speed of the game.
  • Course Selection - Change how the courses are selected.
  • Camera Angle - Change the angle from which the camera views the race (unlockable in Checklist)
  • Features - Change the frequency and severity of course features
  • Items - Change the type of items that appear (unlockable in Checklist). The options are as follows:
    • Normal - Items appear as normal.
    • Attack - Only "Attack" type items appear (see items table above).
    • Mystery - Items appear as question marks, revealing their true form only when picked up.

Checklist[edit]

Like the other game modes, Top Ride has aChecklist, with 120 unique objectives to meet. Most of these revolve around meeting certain times, using certain items, and racing under certain conditions. Most of what is unlockable from the Checklist are music tracks, bonus settings, and new items.

Kirby Air Riders[edit]

Top Ride returns inKirby Air Riders, though with various changes from its appearance inKirby Air Ride. The biggest change is that, like in Air Ride, most Air Ride Machines in the game can be used in Top Ride, rather than it having two dedicated ones exclusive to Top Ride. Instead, the original machine's controls are options that can be selected (Free or Steer).Dragoon,Hydra, andLeo can only be used during Time Attack or Free Run after being unlocked on theCity TrialChecklist, while theCompact Star, theFlight Warp Star, andGigantes cannot be used at all.

Moreover, the max number of Riders is 8 instead of 4 of the original, and Copy Abilities are present, though they are only obtained fromCopy Panels that appear throughout the courses and not from enemies. A rider can only have an Item or Copy Ability active, and picking a new one of either type will override any other currently in possession of the rider.

Courses[edit]

There are nine Top Ride courses inKirby Air Riders. All are available from the start, with the exception of Nova, which is unlocked by winning 15 times in Top Ride. In this game, each course corresponds directly to one of the new Air Ride courses.

  • InKirby Air Ride, there is an unused item intended for Top Ride, referred to in the file data asUsiroYurerun. It is unknown what purpose this item would have served in gameplay. The name may be a combination of後ろushiro, which means "rear", and揺れるyureru, which means "to quake" or "to tremble".
  • Notably, the official artwork depicting Top Ride fromKirby Air Ride shows five Kirbys on the board at once, when the maximum allowed in that game is four. Additionally, the Kirby in the back appears to be orange, which is not one of the availablecolors Kirby can use in the game.
