A new festival of battle is about to begin! Test your limits with...The Ultimate Choice! Kirby and friends will face off against a gaggle of super-spicy bosses in their unending quest to gobble up everything in sight!
— Kirby Star Allies pause screen description

The Ultimate Choice is aBoss EnduranceSub-Game present inKirby Star Allies, where selected characters defeat a series of bosses, similar toThe Arena. It is unlocked after completing Story Mode for the first time, along withGuest Star ???? Star Allies Go! andHeroes in Another Dimension. It has two major differences compared to The Arena: it records the player's score, and it has nine different levels of difficulty. As such, it can be seen as effectively nine different Arenas rolled into a single game. Completing this mode on the Soul Melter difficulty setting is required for100% completion. Completing the bonus Soul Melter EX difficulty is not required for 100%, but it is requiredto crown the save file.

Much like its counterparts in previous titles, The Ultimate Choice is aboss endurance mode with rest areas in-between each fight. Bosses and enemy ambushes are encountered in a set order depending on the difficulty chosen. The Ultimate Choice also features a character select screen much likeHelper to Hero inKirby Super Star Ultra, and keeps separate scores for each one. The player can choose betweenKirby and most of hisCopy Abilities, and any of therecruitable allies to play as. After one successful run on any difficulty, currently availableDream Friends also become available to play as.CPU or human-controlled allies can also join the player for a team of up to four, with their individual damage output reduced to prevent bosses from going down too quickly.

Gameplay[edit]

The Ultimate Choice is split up into nine difficulty levels. The way it works is very similar to the Intensity Meter concept present inKid Icarus: Uprising,Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS / Wii U, andSuper Smash Bros. Ultimate; the player can pick any difficulty from the available selection, with greater rewards given out for higher difficulties. Only the first five are available at first, with the other four unlocked after meeting certain criteria. A high score is kept for this mode; harder difficulties give more points than the lower ones.

Before starting the game, the player must choose how many human players will play:

  • 1 human player is in theSolo Rank category;
  • 2-4 human players are in theWith Friends Rank category.

The more players in play (includingCPU), the less damage they will deal tomid-bosses andbosses. The Ultimate Choice has a different set of multiplayer modifiers from main modes (Story Mode,Guest Star ???? Star Allies Go!, andHeroes in Another Dimension).

Attack Modifiers
Number of PlayersThe Ultimate ChoiceMain Modes
1×1.0×1.0
2×0.875×0.75
3×0.8×0.6
4×0.75×0.5

Then, player 1 chooses aCopy Ability forKirby or the friend that corresponds with said ability, and (if desired) chooses up to three additional friends to accompany player 1's character through the whole run. If more than one person is playing, additional players select their own characters independently, though only player 1 can play as Kirby. After completing The Ultimate Choice once, new character options open up: Dream Friends for every player andNormal Kirby for player 1 only.

After character select, player 1 chooses the difficulty level. Most bosses have fixedhealth regardless of difficulty. Once the difficulty is confirmed, the battles begin.

During boss battles, any players orCPUs besides player 1 cannot be permanently defeated, unfriended, or swallowed for their ability (if any). Fainted allies who are still in the stage will revive with minimal health if left unconscious at the end of a battle (or if thrown off the stage during certain phase transitions in certain battles). If fainted allies are not revived in time and disappear mid-battle, they will revive with half health in the rest area. In a multiplayer run, if player 1 is KO'd, other players must revive player 1 before the given time runs out; otherwise, the game is over when player 1 is done in.

In-between battles, characters can use a limited supply offood items for healing if needed, and can also pick upPicture Pieces from treasure chests. On higher difficulties, more pieces can be collected, but there will be less potent food items. Before the final round, an additional food item can be found inside the last chest.

amiibo can be used to obtain extra food in this mode (up to 7 times in a single playthrough), but doing so will mark the score as having been achieved using amiibo. Characters who have completed the sub-game are crowned on the character select menu (yellow crown for Difficulty 1-7; red crown for Soul Melter; green crown for Soul Melter EX). If every character has completed the sub-game (regardless of difficulty), a special message will pop up to congratulate the achievement.

Difficulty[edit]

As of Version 4.0.0a, the game has nine difficulty levels, with the first five being available at start and the last four being unlockable. Difficulty levels are represented visually with Kirby adding hot sauce to a plate ofSuperspicy Curry; the higher the difficulty, the more hot sauce is added. Kirby's expression also changes, from happy to tense to shocked. When Infernal Crisis is selected, he takes on the same shocked expression as when selecting Very Hard difficulty in both theGame Boy andSuper Famicom versions ofKirby's Star Stacker; when Soul Melter is selected, he takes on the appearance of Devil Kirby from theKirby: Right Back at Ya! episodeFrog Wild.

Version 4.0.0 adds Soul Melter EX, which is unlocked by clearing both Soul Melter andHeroes in Another Dimension. To select Soul Melter EX, the player should select Soul Melter and press ↑, A, and - together (the same command forKirby's Dream Land'sExtra Game). When Soul Melter EX is selected, Kirby gains a "blank" face that staresdirectly at the player, similar toVoid Termina's final core. He also adds four bottles of hot sauce to the curry instead of one.

Soul Melter EX primarily incorporates the bosses from Heroes in Another Dimension. Completing Soul Melter EX unlocks theDream Button, which can switch Kirby's look between the current modern look or the classic look fromKirby's Dream Land.

Player health[edit]

The maximumhealth of all players varies between difficulty levels:

  • 1-4 (Sweet Breeze - Spicy Adventure): 100%
  • 5-7 (Sizzling Threat - Infernal Crisis): 80%
  • Secret (Soul Melter): 70%
  • Secret (Soul Melter EX): 100%

Friends have the same power asKirby's respectiveCopy Abilities. In addition, they usually have better jumping/hovering ability than Kirby'shover. However, most of them have lowerhealth than Kirby.

The higher difficulty levels of The Ultimate Choice feature some unique changes from the lower difficulty levels:

Soul Melter EX features further changes:

  • Normal Kirby'sStar Bullets deal increased damage in Soul Melter EX (andHeroes in Another Dimension) compared to regular modes and the other difficulties in The Ultimate Choice. Specifically, they start at 78 damage (90 with the dashing damage boost) and scale up to 390 with twelve objects inhaled (400 dashing), as opposed to the default damage being 52 (60 dashing) and scaling up to 100 (105 dashing).
  • Unique tougher versions ofGoldon & Silvox,Francisca,Flamberge, andZan Partizanne are fought. They all have increased health and unique Special Page text. The Mage-Sisters appear in their Heroes in Another Dimension palettes and have tweaked attacks.
  • The Soul Melter EX form of Void Termina is palette swapped and more difficult, labeled "The True Destroyer of Worlds". He also has unique Special Page text and a new final form,Void.

Scoring[edit]

In each difficulty mode, a score is kept. This score is based on the defeated boss phases (score varies in difficulty) and time bonuses (how quickly Kirby and his allies defeat bosses). The score decreases by 1000 every time player 1 is KO'd in the multiplayer mode, however.

The lowest attainable score is 11500 points on Sweet Breeze difficulty in multiplayer mode: 1500 from defeatingMeta Knight's second phase and 10000 from the Sweet Breeze Clear Bonus; player 1 has to be KO'd multiple times until the score is depleted to zero before defeating Meta Knight's first phase; at least 5 minutes must be spent before finishing off Meta Knight so that the time bonus runs out.

The 22nd article of the Nintendo SwitchKirby Star Allies Channel mentions that the score can reach 700000 points if Soul Melter EX is cleared fast enough. To reach a score of 700000, Soul Melter EX has to be cleared under 20:55.40 and when playing in multiplayer, P1 must not be KO'd and revived. Reaching a score of 710000 requires Soul Melter EX to be cleared under 04:15.40, which is not currently known to be possible. The highest theoretical score, if every boss was defeated in under one second, would be 712554.

Time Bonus[edit]

Time bonus = base value1 - (defeat time2 × 10)

1 The base value is 3000, except for the following bosses:

  • Void Termina (Infernal Crisis) - 5000
  • Void Termina &Void Soul (Soul Melter) - 7000
  • The True Destroyer of Worlds, Void Termina &Void (Soul Melter EX) - 70000

2 Unit: second; rounded down to one decimal place.

For most bosses, the boss defeated points are awarded before the time bonus points are. However, the opposite is true for King Dedede and Parallel Dedede, making them the only bosses with this distinction.

Differences from other modes[edit]

  • If a specific copy ability is selected for Kirby to use at the start of the game, he will be locked into that ability, and be unable to lose it for the duration of the game. This does not apply if Normal Kirby is chosen.
    • Because of this,Hammer Kirby can use Hammer Throw infinitely without losing the ability, andArtist Kirby cannot use Painbrush, unless Normal Kirby gains either ability by inhaling the respectiveBonkers orVividria mid-bosses.
    • TheCook,Crash,Festival,Mike andSleep abilities are unavailable forKirby to choose on the menu, and subsequentlyChef Kawasaki is the only playable character that can use the Cook ability. Normal Kirby can still obtain the Festival ability fromYggy Woods' golden cherries, and the Cook ability from the Chef Kawasaki mid-boss.
  • To prevent overuse, in the rest area, Chef Kawasaki's Cook Pot and Souper Supper,Artist's Still Life, Adeleine & Ribbon's Al Fresco, andThe Three Mage-Sisters' Sister Circle attacks do nothing, and their cooldown timer freezes.
    • Chef Kawasaki's cooldown timer is increased from 60 seconds (1 minute) to 150 seconds (2-and-a-half minutes).
    • The Three Mage-Sisters' Sister Circle does more damage with more friends (in other modes, it does fixed damage regardless of the number of players).
  • Most bosses in The Ultimate Choice have ×0.75health compared to their base health used in other modes. This includes bosses exclusively fought in this mode, i.e. the stronger Mage-Sisters and Goldon & Silvox in Soul Melter EX. Morpho Knight and Morpho Knight EX use a ×0.66... multiplier, while Void Soul and Void do not use a base multiplier but have dynamic defense multipliers.
  • Grand Mam is not fought on any difficulty. This is due to the fact that Grand Mam must be defeated with theFriend Star and at least two Copy Abilities:Fire and a slash-property ability (e.g.Cutter,Ninja,Sword).
  • TheStar Allies Sparkler can be piloted by any number of players.

The title screen track of The Ultimate Choice is composed byYuuta Ogasawara and titled"Your Preferred Spiciness for the Ultimate Choice"[1]. It can be found and listened to as track 198 in theJukebox.

This track is an arrangement of "Green Greens" in a heavy metal and oriental fashion, to express the theme of spiciness (the difficulty levels).

Legacy tracks[edit]

Several classic tunes from previousKirby games appear in The Ultimate Choice. Many of them only appear in Soul Melter and Soul Melter EX, and some are exclusive to Soul Melter EX.

Kirby's Return to Dream Land arrangement ofKirby Super Star's regular boss battle theme.
This could be a reference to how the other games with legacy tracks for the ambushes followKirby Super Star's style, and how "Vs. Waddle Tank" is an arrangement ofKirby Super Star's boss theme.

Kracko206"Ordeal: Save This Kingdom!"Team Kirby Clash DeluxeOrdeal theme, orchestral version for the Kracko, Whispy Woods and Pyribbit Ordeals.
This could be a reference to how Kracko is the first ordeal boss inTeam Kirby Clash Deluxe.

207"Ordeal: Save This World!"Team Kirby Clash DeluxeOrdeal theme, electronic version for the Tougher-rank Whispy Woods, Pyribbit and Kracko quests.
The Ordeal theme "upgrades" from the orchestral version of the song to the rock version when Kracko turns into Twin Kracko.
This could also be a reference to Kracko being one of the last bosses to be fought in the Empyrean before the Decisive Battlefield is unlocked, and how Twin Kracko, in every difficulty they are fought in except for Sizzling Threat, ends the first group of bosses in that difficulty level before transitioning to the next group.

Main article:Morpho Knight#Dream Friend music change

In Soul Melter and Soul Melter EX, Morpho Knight's theme will be replaced by new music arrangements when player 1 is aDream Friend that has completedGuest Star ???? Star Allies Go! at least once. The background ofThe Divine Terminus will always change depending on which Dream Friend is used in Soul Melter.

In Soul Melter EX, the rest area music changes between boss fights, starting withFrancisca and continuing up toVoid Termina. The majority of these music tracks are taken from previousKirby games, most of which were used in climactic situations or boss fights. While this confused the game's composers, directorShinya Kumazaki stated that the music is supposed to keep the player "in a trance-like state" where they can't rest between battles.[2]

Version changelog[edit]

The following are small changes made to the game in newer versions:

4.0.0[edit]

  • For each battle, the timer doesn't start ticking until the given boss can start being attacked in battle. In prior versions, the timer doesn't stop until the given boss is defeated.
    • Likewise, the timer pauses during theKracko battle after his initial health bar is depleted. In prior versions, it only pauses as Kracko splits in two and afterTwin Kracko is defeated.
  • Void Soul's attack order has changed.

Trivia[edit]

  • Red chili peppers fall down in the background of the title screen. On occasion, a green chili pepper may fall down as well.
  • The idea of making the mode curry-themed came toShinya Kumazaki when he saw a curry store where one could choose the level of spiciness they'd like.[3]
  • An unused audio file of the "Helper's Rest" theme fromKirby Super Star Ultra is included among the files for Soul Melter EX's rest area themes, suggesting it was a potential candidate before the final line-up was decided.
  • Several aspects of Soul Melter EX reference previous titles in theKirby series:
    • The screen displayed when unlocking Soul Melter EX references the screen displayed when unlocking Extra Game inKirby's Dream Land; in addition to using the same command, the screen showsKing Dedede's shocked expression and points out the buttons used to input the command on the controller, just like said screen. The title of the dialogue box is "♥Good Job!" (or, in Japanese,「♥クリア おめでとう!」"You cleared it, congratulations!"), which is the same title on that screen inKirby's Dream Land (though without the heart in the English version's case).
    • In the Japanese version, when starting Soul Melter EX, the dialogue box displays:「たましいからさ EX後悔こうかいしますよ。」("Soul Melter EX... you'll regret this.") This is a reference to the recurring dialogue prompt that displays when attempting to delete a save file in manyKirby andSuper Smash Bros. games,「こうかいしませんね?」("You're sure you won't regret this?", or more literally "No regrets, right?"). It is somewhat missed in the English localization, which translates「後悔こうかいしますよ。」as "No regrets!" and「こうかいしませんね?」as "Are youREALLY sure?"
    • In the Japanese version, the button to press when starting Soul Melter EX reads「…がんばる!!」("Good luck!" in the English version of the game, with a more direct translation being "try your hardest!") instead of the usual「スタート」("Start"). This is an apparent reference to the battle inKirby 64: The Crystal Shards changing the「でなおす」("Try Again") button in the pause screen to read「がんばる」("Tough It Out!" in the English version ofKirby 64).
