This article is about King Dedede and his clones in the final battle of Kirby Fighters Deluxe. For the king himself, seeKing Dedede.

Team DDD (simply referred to asDedede in the British English version) is the finalboss ofKirby Fighters Deluxe's Single Player Mode. The team consists ofKing Dedede and 23-63 smaller clones—Mini Dededes (pink & small-sized) and Combo Dededes (orange & medium-sized).

Difficulty[edit]

The number of Team DDD varies on difficulty. Some elements of the stage, as well as the music played, are changed on "Very Hard" difficulty.

(Kirby: Nightmare in Dream Land)

The animation at the start of the battle when Kirby encounters King Dedede is longer in the Very Hard difficulty.

IfKirby is knocked out in this final battle and the player selects continue, Team DDD will reduce their numbers to a lower level of difficulty in subsequent rematches, down to a minimum of 24. However, the actual difficulty of the battle remains the same.

Battle[edit]

When Kirby enters the Final Round of Single Player Mode, he sees King Dedede alone with a new hammer called "Star Rod Hammer Dedede Custom" created from theFountain of Dreams. This hammer resembles a cross between theStar Rod and Dedede's standard hammer, having a blocky, golden, star-emblazoned mallet with a swirling white-and-pink handle. However, King Dedede doesn't battle on his own at first. He roars and jumps off the stage, as the Mini Dededes start to appear and the battle begins.

Phase 1: Mini Dededes[edit]

Archer Kirby picks off the Mini Dededes one-by-one.

Mini Dededes enter the stage one by one, wielding pink toy mallets, and attacking with King Dedede's basic moves. A Mini Dedede can be easily defeated in one hit or two, depending on the strength of theCopy Ability, and can even be defeated withslides, dive attacks andair bullets. A Mini Dedede can be grabbed by specific abilities too. The number of Mini Dededes varies depending on the difficulty level, ranging from as few as 21 to as many as 61. On the lower difficulties, food items will appear after every few Dededes defeated.

The following lists all of the Mini Dededes' attacks inKirby Fighters Deluxe. The attacks that the Mini Dededes use depends on the difficulty selected, and they don't have a set attack pattern.

Super Dedede JumpAll except EasyThe Mini Dedede leaps into the air and then lands suddenly in another location.
HoverHard and Very HardThe Mini Dedede takes in air and starts hovering toward Kirby.

Phase 2: King Dedede & Combo Dededes[edit]

Kirby fighting King Dedede and his Combo Dededes.
Kirby takes on a larger Dedede

After every Mini Dedede is defeated, King Dedede returns to the stage, now with the assistance of two Combo Dededes. In the first three difficulties, the three Dededes appear on the opposite side of the stage in which Kirby is on, with the two Combo Dededes surrounding King Dedede. In the Very Hard difficulty, however, King Dedede always appear on the center of the stage, with each Combo Dedede appearing on each side of the stage, independently of Kirby's position. The music also switches to a different theme. Note that while defeating the Combo Dededes drains thehealth of the boss, it is not required to beat them; only defeating the real Dedede is necessary.

When the Combo Dededes are still on the stage, King Dedede and his clones still attack with their basic moves. Like the Mini Dededes, the Combo Dededes can be grabbed by specific abilities. In addition, King Dedede takes more damage from Kirby before his giant transformation, so the optimal strategy to complete the battle as quickly as possible is to ignore the Combo Dededes and concentrating on damaging the real Dedede.

The following lists all of the Combo Dededes' attacks and all of King Dedede's attacks in his first phase inKirby Fighters Deluxe. The attacks that the Combo Dededes use and that King Dedede uses depends on the difficulty in which they are battled, and the Combo Dededes doesn't follow a set attack pattern. In the Very Hard difficulty, King Dedede always starts with the "Hammer" move, but aside from that, he doesn't seem to have a set attack pattern.

If Kirby is airborne when King Dedede is raising his hammer, he will jump up and swing the hammer in midair. When he lands, a shock wave emanates from it, which creates a drop star when it gets to the end of the screen.
In the Hard and Very Hard difficulties, when he attacks on the ground, he swings his hammer twice, creating one small Small Dropped Star that disappears quickly after the first swing, and then a normal one after the second swing.
Head SlideAll difficultiesKing Dedede runs and then dives at Kirby, creating a Dropped Star when he lands.
Super Dedede JumpAll difficultiesKing Dedede leaps into the air and then lands suddenly in another location, creating two Dropped Stars.
In the Very Hard difficulty, he sends two shock waves to the sides when he lands, each one creating a Dropped Star when it gets to the end of the screen.
In the Hard and Very Hard difficulties, the screen rumbles when he lands, and if the attack hits Kirby, he is sent flying.

When both Combo Dededes are defeated, King Dedede becomes furious and increases his size. In his giant form, King Dedede can now use many energy attacks with his Star Rod Hammer Dedede Custom, similar to those ofMasked Dedede's Revenge andShadow Dedede fromKirby: Triple Deluxe. Notably, when he does the hammer spin attack, he will throw various DededeKeychains onto the screen to hinder the player's sight (called "Keychains of Glory"), similar toKracko's "Throwback Blindfold" attack in Round 5 of Single Player Mode. On Very Hard mode, these Keychains use unique designs not found inKirby: Triple Deluxe.

The following lists all of King Dedede's attacks after growing in size inKirby Fighters Deluxe. The attacks that he uses depend on which difficulty he is challenged. In the Very Hard difficulty, he always starts with the "Extra Dedede Jump" move, but aside from said instance, he appears to lack a set attack pattern.

In the Very Hard difficulty, he may turn around and slide a second time, which doesn't create a Dropped Star.
Super Dedede JumpAll except Very HardKing Dedede leaps into the air and then lands suddenly in another location, creating two Dropped Stars.
He may do this three times in succession. In the Hard and Very Hard difficulties, the screen rumbles when he lands, and if the attack hits Kirby, he is sent flying.
Hammer TornadoAll difficultiesKing Dedede spins rapidly with his hammer along the ground. He then ascends in the air while spinning and throws 4 "Keychains of Glory" onto the screen to hinder the player's sight.
After that, he lands on the ground and gets dizzy for some seconds. He takes little to no damage while spinning.
In the Very Hard difficulty, he spins on the ground a bit more than in lower difficulties before ascending, and the Keychains he throws out are designs not found inKirby: Triple Deluxe.
Keychains of Glory in Very Hard difficulty include:
  • Dedede throwing a tantrum (fromKirby's Dream Land, Extra Game unlock screen)
  • Dedede crying (fromKirby's Dream Land, Configuration Mode unlock screen)
  • Dedede sulking (fromKirby's Dream Land, Configuration Mode unlock screen)
  • Dedede bloating up (fromKirby Super Star)
  • Dedede shocked, wearing his Japanese clothes in Samurai Kirby (fromKirby Super Star)
  • Dedede with his back turned (fromKirby's Dream Land 3)
  • Dedede's belly growing teeth (fromKirby's Dream Land 3)
  • Dedede's face grinning in Gourmet Race (fromKirby Super Star Ultra)
  • Dedede throwing a tantrum in Gourmet Race (fromKirby Super Star Ultra)
  • Dedede aiming a gun, wearing his western clothes in Kirby on the Draw (fromKirby Super Star Ultra)
  • Dedede's card in Kirby Card Swipe (fromKirby Super Star Ultra)
HoverAll except Very HardKing Dedede takes in air and starts hovering toward Kirby. In the end, he lets out anAir Bullet which does damage to Kirby.
Hypernova InhaleAll difficultiesKing Dedede inhales, creating a big vortex. If Kirby doesn't run fast enough from the suction, he will be sucked up and then spat out at the screen.
Hammer DanceAll except EasyKing Dedede wildly swings his hammer about, aiming for Kirby as he does so, and turning with his strikes as needed. He finishes with a long lunge attack, leaving a Dropped Star behind.
Hammer BomberHard and Very HardKing Dedede jumps into the air with his hammer, and then comes swinging it down, creating a large explosion where he lands with five Dropped Stars around him.
Shining HammerHard and Very HardKing Dedede charges his hammer, then releases a series of energy orb projectiles across the stage.
Extra Dedede JumpVery HardKing Dedede furiously jumps from one side of the stage to the other five times, in each still creating two Dropped Stars when he lands, and creating two shock waves after he lands the fifth time. Then, he will repeat the process in the opposite direction.
Hammer FarmerVery HardKing Dedede swings his hammer repeatedly, moving across the stage, like how a farmer harvests with a sickle. He gets to the end of the stage, turns around, hammers repeatedly again to the other side, then he jumps and swings his hammer in the air, releasing a shock wave when he lands, which produces a Dropped Stars when it gets to the ends of the stage.

When the real King Dedede is defeated, all Dededes (including Combo Dededes if any) blast off the stage, and Single Player Mode is completed.

Trivia[edit]

  • The Mini Dededes don't reuse the same model as King Dedede. They have rounder features, bigger faces and clothes, and smaller hands and feet. According to designer Kenichiro Kita onMiiverse, these subtle changes were made to make them look smaller and younger, like children wearing clothes that are too big for them.
  • Some of King Dedede's attacks move the game's camera in different ways, like rotating to the direction of his attack, or slightly rumbling if he does a strong attack.
  • The idea of fighting more than one Dedede in the same boss battle would later reappear during theDedede Clone boss battle ofRhythm Route inKirby: Planet Robobot. When split into three Dedede Clones, they start by simultaneously using the Hammer Farmer attack, which was previously performed alone by the Team DDD version of King Dedede on Very Hard mode.
  • Several of the lines in the Special Page for Team DDD are, in the Japanese and Korean versions, parodies of previous dialogue from theKirby series.
