Sword is aCopy Ability which grants the user a blade to wield against his foes. First appearing inKirby's Adventure, this is one of the oldest and most essential abilities, and has since become one of the most ubiquitous and recognizable Copy Abilities in the series - often being among the first (if not the very first) seen. When utilizing it, the user adopts a green hat with a yellow brim and a pompom at its tip, which grants them a look similar to that of Link from theThe Legend of Zelda series. The most common way to obtain the Sword ability is by inhalingSword Knight,Blade Knight, or themid-bossGigant Edge. Sword is also notable for being one of the abilities that can be used underwater, making it very versatile. InKirby's Return to Dream Land andKirby's Return to Dream Land Deluxe, there is asuper version of this ability calledUltra Sword.

A recurring character, the sword-wieldingMeta Knight, is prone to challengeKirby to duels throughout the series. Prior to these battles, Meta Knight commonly throws Kirby a sword, which he can use to get the Sword ability as well. In most cases, Meta Knight refuses to battle Kirby if he is not equipped with this ability.

Characteristics[edit]

Sword is among one of the first Copy Abilities introduced, and not much of it has changed ever since its introduction. In its basic form, Sword allows the user to swing their sword overhead to strike enemies, and can also swing it around underwater and while jumping. In multiple games, Sword can also cut through devices such asropes and grass, adding a puzzle utility to it.

Like many other abilities, starting withKirby Super Star, Sword would get a more extensive moveset, including staple moves such as Sword Beam and Multisword Attack. Its moveset would be expanded even further starting withKirby's Return to Dream Land, where even more moves such as Sword Spin were introduced.

Appearance[edit]

Sword's design overall has been pretty consistent over the series' years, in particular its hat. Sword's hat is a green hat similar to Link's fromThe Legend of Zelda, an intentional reference. Unlike Link's hat, however, Sword's features a yellow brim, and a yellow pompom at its tip. Other than various minor changes to its coloration, the hat has never been changed. Sword's sword, however, has changed more.Kirby's Adventure,Kirby Super Star, andKirby: Right Back at Ya! feature a sword with a simple edge and straight crossguard, but starting withKirby: Nightmare in Dream Land, the sword crossguard was changed to have its quillons pointed upwards, forming a "U" shape, as well with the addition of a gem. Ever since, the sword's shape has remained unchanged. The sword's colors are also consistent ever since: the hilt is blue, and the gem is orange or yellow, and the blade is silver, although some early designs depicted it as golden.

Game appearances[edit]

Kirby's Adventure /Kirby: Nightmare in Dream Land[edit]

The Sword ability was first introduced inKirby's Adventure, where Kirby could copy the abilities of his foes for the first time. When sporting this ability, Kirby's sprite doesn't change, but he can be seen holding a sword. The sword can be swung by pressing the B Button, allowing Kirby to use two different attacks. If Kirby uses the sword while standing on the ground, he swings the blade in front of him, while he performs a cutting somersault when in midair or underwater. The Sword ability is also essential for the boss battle against Meta Knight inOrange Ocean. Sword deals 5 damage inKirby's Adventure^[1] and 6 inKirby: Nightmare in Dream Land.^[2]

Sword reappears inKirby: Nightmare in Dream Land, where it retains the same functions as in the original game. Due to the graphical updates, Kirby also adopts his green cap when getting this ability.

Kirby Super Star /Kirby Super Star Ultra[edit]

Sword reappears as one of Kirby's regular copy abilities inKirby Super Star and its remakeKirby Super Star Ultra. Since this game introduced the concept of Kirby wearing different hats after copying an opponent, this game is the first to show him with the signature green cap. Aside from the updated sprite, Kirby also has access to a whole pool of new sword techniques, which can be used to defeat foes more efficiently. When carrying a Sword, Kirby can also summon a Blade Knight and use him as aHelper in battle. InKirby Super Star only, whenCopy Kirby uses Analyze Beam onChef Kawasaki during battle, Sword is one of the possible copy abilities he can get - the others areBeam,Wing, orCutter.

Additionally, inMeta Knightmare Ultra, Meta Knight can summon aBlade Knight (and sometimes, aSword Knight) as hisHelper.

Kirby Air Ride[edit]

Sword appears as an ability in this spin-off racing title. When acquired fromSword Knight, Kirby gains his familiar green hat and a sword with which he uses to swipe automatically at any enemies or opponents in his path. The ability lasts for only a short time before disappearing. Kirby uses the Sword ability in the opening cutscene to defeat two Sword Knights in cinematic fashion before facing off against Meta Knight.

Meta Knight essentially has permanent access to the Sword Ability in this game.

Kirby & The Amazing Mirror[edit]

The Sword ability returns inKirby & The Amazing Mirror in its usual function. Its moveset in this game is similar toKirby's Adventure andKirby: Nightmare in Dream Land.Sword Knight andHeavy Knight are the main providers of this ability, while it can also be obtained by inhaling one ofDark Meta Knight'sDropped Stars. Additionally, Kirby can now chain his sword slashes together, which makes him able to attack very rapidly. Kirby is now also able to useFinal Cutter (instead called Final Sword) against enemies, a technique which is usually exclusive to the Cutter ability. A more powerful version of the Sword ability is also featured in this game, calledMaster. Kirby obtains this special ability in the final boss battle, after picking up Meta Knight's sword.

Curiously, Kirby is depicted with the Sword ability on the American box art ofKirby & The Amazing Mirror.

Kirby: Squeak Squad[edit]

Sword makes another appearance in the gameKirby: Squeak Squad, using the same moveset asKirby & The Amazing Mirror. After obtaining the appropriateAbility Scroll, Kirby can infuse his sword with ice, fire, or lightning by combining its Copy Abilitybubble with theIce,Fire andSpark Copy Abilities respectively. While this does not change its moveset, it adds additional power to Kirby's sword swipes, and allows him to affect enemies and the environment in a similar manner to the element it is infused with. Notably, none of these elements can be used underwater, as noted in the abilities' pause screen description, causing Kirby's sword to revert to normal while submerged.Sword Knight andHeavy Knight provides this ability, while it can also be obtained by inhaling one ofMeta Knight'sDropped Stars.

Sword makes another appearance inKirby's Return to Dream Land and its remake,Kirby's Return to Dream Land Deluxe, here sporting an expanded set of moves which would carry on to subsequent main-series games. In addition, asuper form of this ability has appeared, called theUltra Sword, found in some stages, obtained when Kirby swallows aSuper Blade Knight.

Meta Knight's moveset as a playable character has several similarities to the Sword ability.

Kirby's Dream Collection Special Edition[edit]

Sword is one of the abilities that can be used in the sub-gameNew Challenge Stages. It has the exact same function and look as it does inKirby's Return to Dream Land.

Kirby: Triple Deluxe[edit]

Sword makes a reappearance inKirby: Triple Deluxe. Like most of the returning copy abilities, it is mostly unchanged since its appearance inKirby's Return to Dream Land, though it has a few new tricks. Starting here, Kirby gains the "Sky Energy Sword" attack, which allows him to fire a Sword Beam at any level of health after raising his sword in the air for a short time. This is a direct reference to theSkyward Strike fromThe Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword.

In addition, Sword gains "Twister Slash", which allows Kirby to rise while using Spin Slash, and "Hat Thrust", which causes Kirby to thrust his sword downward as he gently falls to the ground. This move is very similar to the old version of Down Thrust seen inKirby Super Star andKirby Super Star Ultra.

Sword is also available as one of the abilities inKirby Fighters.

Kirby Fighters Deluxe[edit]

Sword is one of the selectable abilities inKirby Fighters Deluxe, functioning exactly the same as it did inKirby: Triple Deluxe, though its underwater abilities are removed due to there being no water in this game. Sword Beam is also removed from its moveset. Its unlockable Rare Outfit is based on Blade Knight's appearance.

Kirby: Planet Robobot[edit]

Sword returns in this installment, and can be combined with theRobobot Armor fornew functionality. In addition, Kirby can obtain this ability if the player scans variousamiibo of swordfighters (most notably Link). There is also a specialMeta Knight variant of the ability that Kirby can use if the series Meta Knight amiibo is scanned in.

Kirby Battle Royale[edit]

Sword is one of the abilities available inKirby Battle Royale, and is the one most prominently featured. With the Sword ability, Kirby can move smoothly through the battlefield and hit opponent Kirbys all around him with his Spin Slash. The Drill Stab move can also be performed both on the ground and in the air, though it doesn't travel as far in the air.

There are a number of different costumes for the Sword ability as well. Scanning theKirby series Kirbyamiibo grants a costume that represents theUltra Sword ability.

Kirby Star Allies[edit]

Sword returns in this title, functioning much as it did in previous main series games. It notably loses Sky Energy Sword, however, as its input is now the universal input for usingFriend Abilities. Here, like with the other abilities, Kirby can combine Sword withPower Effects to enchant it, which can include Sizzle, Bluster, Zap, Blizzard, and Splash fusions.

The English description of Sword, when describing Bluster Sword, mentions its "wild" updraft. This is also mentioned in the original Japanese text, and it specifically uses the word "wild" in English:「風でワイルドに 上しょう 気りゅうだ！」This is likely to be a reference toThe Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, which had released the year prior toKirby Star Allies (the Japanese title of said game likewise retains "wild" in English).

Super Kirby Clash[edit]

Sword does not appear in its normal form inSuper Kirby Clash (Sword Hero is used instead). However, regular Sword Kirby does appear as asticker, purchasable fromMagolor's Shoppe for 20Gem Apples.

Kirby Fighters 2[edit]

Sword returns inKirby Fighters 2 as an ability for Kirby. Along withBomb andStaff, it is one of the starter abilities, meaning it does not need to be unlocked. Its moveset is the same as inKirby Fighters Deluxe.

Moveset[edit]

Kirby and the Forgotten Land /Kirby and the Forgotten Land – Nintendo Switch 2 Edition + Star-Crossed World[edit]

The Sword ability makes a return inKirby and the Forgotten Land andKirby and the Forgotten Land – Nintendo Switch 2 Edition + Star-Crossed World, and can once again be obtained fromBlade Knight. Multisword Attack and Spin Slash are available as attacks. Notably, Overhead Slash and the final swing of Multisword Strike have been replaced with more lateral swings instead. During his adventures, Kirby can find blueprints, which can then be taken toWaddle Dee's Weapons Shop toevolve the Copy Ability into new forms. There are three evolved forms in the game, those beingGigant Sword,Meta Knight Sword, andMorpho Knight Sword. Gigant Sword is slightly slower, but has much greater range and power. Meta Knight Sword allows Kirby to fire sword beams when he attacks and useUpper Calibur. Morpho Knight Sword allows Kirby to teleport when dodge rolling, make his sword giant for a limited amount of time, recoverhealth when making combo strikes, and use two attacks whileguarding (Sukhavati Psychic Beast on the ground, and Sukhavati Scale Wave in midair).

This ability is one of four accessible in the game'sdemo. It automatically becomes Gigant Sword once the three available stages are complete, but this can be reverted back to the original ability if the player so desires.

Kirby's Dream Buffet[edit]

Sword Kirby does not appear directly inKirby's Dream Buffet. However, he does appear on fourCharacter Treats: one using a sprite fromKirby's Adventure, another pairing artwork of him withBeam Kirby fromKirby Fighters Deluxe, a third pairing artwork of him withWrestler Kirby fromKirby Fighters 2, and one more depicting him with Wrestler Kirby riding theBuddy Star Blaster. Notably, this marks the first time Sword Kirby was referenced in aKirby game that Sword Kirby does not actually appear in.

Kirby Air Riders[edit]

Sword appears inKirby Air Riders, functioning the same way it did inKirby Air Ride: it gives the user a sword that automatically attacks foes when close to them. Unlike the original game,Blade Knight appears to provide the ability instead ofSword Knight. Like all other Copy Abilities in the game, it can be obtained by any rider, not just Kirby.

The sword in this game retains its orange blade fromKirby Air Ride, instead of the metallic gray blade it has in current games.

Other abilities which resemble Sword[edit]

In addition to Sword proper, there are a number of other abilities and items in the series which resemble the Sword ability, but are not exactly the same. These are as follows:

• Cutter - This ability gives the user access to unlimited sharp boomerangs. While these are primarily meant for throwing, the user can use them to swipe at opponents like a sword.
• Ninja - This ability gives the user a katana which they use for some of their attacks.
• Final Cutter - When using this technique with theSmash ability or in theSuper Smash Bros. games, Kirby pulls out a scimitar, which is another type of sword.
• Rainbow Sword - Kirby gains access to thisLast Battle Ability after collecting all of theRainbow Drops inKirby's Dream Land 2, and uses it to battleDark Matter.
• Burn-Cutter &Spark-Cutter - These twoPower Combos fromKirby 64: The Crystal Shards give the user elementally charged swords which can be used to attack enemies.
• Galaxia - InKirby: Right Back at Ya! and other minor appearances within the video games themselves, Kirby wields the legendary blade Galaxia, which is normally carried byMeta Knight.
• Master - InKirby & The Amazing Mirror, Kirby is given a powerful golden sword (which may or may not be Galaxia) by Meta Knight to battleDark Mind with. If Kirby loses this sword during the battle, it will be given back to him byShadow Kirby in the next phase.
• Ultra Sword - ThisSuper Ability fromKirby's Return to Dream Land resembles the standard Sword ability, but is massively powered-up. Kirby uses it to clear away big obstacles and defeat certain bosses, and also uses it as hisFinal Smash inSuper Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS / Wii U andSuper Smash Bros. Ultimate.

Sword makes an appearance in the anime seriesKirby: Right Back at Ya!, being one of the first abilities to appear. When Kirby has this ability, he is able to fight like a master swordsman, using lightning-quick attacks to chop upmonsters that oppose him. His signature technique when using the Sword ability is the powerful Sword Beam, which is capable of cutting clean through solid objects. • Starting inKirby Super Star, the Sword ability is a clear reference toLink from theThe Legend of Zelda series. The booklet that comes withKirby's Dream Collection Special Edition states that it was done in response to Kirby'scameo appearance inThe Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening.
  • The cap from the Sword ability looks similar to the one Link wears. In theSuper Smash Bros. series, Kirby can inhale Link to get his cap, but he only uses Link's Bow starting withMelee and Boomerang in the originalSuper Smash Bros.
  • Similar attacks between Link and the Sword ability include the Spin Slash (Spin Attack),Down Thrust, Sky Energy Sword (Skyward Strike), andSword Beam. In the last case, both theKirby andZelda forms of the attack can only be used when the user is at full health.
• The Sword ability's appearances inKirby & The Amazing Mirror andKirby: Squeak Squad show very rare instances of an ability acquiring another's moves without the latter having been removed from the game. In this case, although Sword obtained theFinal Cutter move from theCutter ability, Cutter still exists in both of these games, only without said move.
• InKirby and the Forgotten Land, Sword got a new move called Big Spin Slash, which has the same name and is very similar to a move card from the Japan exclusive card gameKirby no Copy-toru!, which released beforeKirby and the Forgotten Land.
