Susie (full nameSusanna Patrya Haltmann^[1]) is a spry pink-haired girl who first appeared inKirby: Planet Robobot. She is the executive assistant and presidential secretary of theHaltmann Works Company, the primary stakeholder of the company's Mechanizing Occupation Project, and the daughter ofPresident Haltmann, who seems to have forgotten this about her. Susie is adept with machinery, able to pilot many different robotic weapons, including a personal mech referred to as her "Business Suit", and also carries a personal blaster. Her motives are not entirely clear, but it is implied that she intends to usurp the Haltmann Works Company from her father.

In Susie's debut appearance, she was a villain and antagonist to Kirby, fighting him personally as aboss and later sendingothercreations of Haltmann Works after him, while also being the primary source of information about the company through her expository dialogue for most ofKirby: Planet Robobot's story. She would make a truce with Kirby and his friends after the company'smother computer went haywire and attempted to end the universe. InKirby Star Allies, she would become a playable protagonist as one of Kirby'sDream Friends, gaining her own part inGuest Star ???? Star Allies Go! andHeroes in Another Dimension. It is explained in said game that she wishes to revive the Haltmann Works Company after its destruction inKirby: Planet Robobot.

Characteristics[edit]

Susie has two distinct profiles, with the first (left) being her on her own, and the second (right) when piloting her Business Suit.

Susie is possessed of a vaguely human body shape, though like bothMagolor andTaranza before her, she has disembodied hands and a large head. Her face consists only of two large completely cyan-colored eyes and blushed cheeks, with no nose or mouth to speak of. She also has long magenta hair, held on the left side by a gold clip. Her outfit seems to consist mostly of a v-neck suit with a collar that extends all the way up past her head, and also forming a hood, with a long gray skirt below, which rounds out to a vaguely boot-shaped piece on the bottom.

Despite her appearance on the box art ofKirby: Planet Robobot, Susie cannot fly or hover. Instead, she relies on a helicopter unit (referred to as a "Transporter" inKirby Star Allies), which she summons whenever she needs to get away. Using this transporter, she is capable of performing maneuvers and attacks similar to those of theJetCopy Ability. However, her true potential as a fighter is revealed when she dons her "Business Suit"; a large decorated robot with a pair of arms and a drill bit in place of legs that she pilots from the top. This suit is meant to serve as an analogue to Kirby'sRobobot Armor, and gives Susie a number of new attack options, including spinning arm attacks, a drill bit slam, and the ability to deploy autonomous drones.

Story Mode[edit]

Susie is first encountered as theboss ofOverload Ocean. Kirby sees her for the first time in the boss chamber, where she introduces herself. Here, she explains that theHaltmann Works Company came toPopstar specifically to exploit its natural resources. She declares that Kirby and his friends take their resources for granted, and this justifies her and her company in doing away with them. She then declares to Kirby that he must be destroyed, and hops into her Business Suit to fight him.

Susie is seen again at the end ofGigabyte Grounds,singing praises to her boss,President Haltmann. She then brings inMecha Knight, a subdued and mechanizedMeta Knight to attack Kirby as the boss of that realm. She later releases another monstrosity to deal with Kirby at the end ofRhythm Route, aDedede Clone.

Susie appears again at the end ofAccess Ark, in the Haltmann Works executive office, using anupgraded version of Mecha Knight to attack Kirby once again. When Kirby defeats him again, Susie is then dismissed by her boss, who takes over the situation from there. After he is defeated, Susie takes the opportunity to attempt to steal the Mother Computer,Star Dream from him. This fails, however, as Star Dream itself zaps her away, and then declares its intentions to erase history. Susie, begrudgingly, offers Kirby a suit ofRobobot Armor and sends him after it.

When Star Dream is finally defeated, and Planet Popstar returned to normal, Susie, along with her Business Suit, depart from the planet to an unknown fate. InKirby Star Allies, it is explained that Susie intends to rebuild the Haltmann Works Company and become its new president.

Once Susie has lost roughly two fifths of her health, she summons a large conical platform to rise in the middle of the room, changing the arena into a looping circular one.

When Susie's health is roughly down to one-fifth, she causes the central platform's panels to unscrew and open up, revealing a large brass cavity in the middle. From here, she attempts to strike at Kirby through this hole.

Once Susie is defeated, her mech explodes, leaving her unarmed. She gets up calmly, brushes dust off herself, scoffs, and summons a small helicopter device to carry her away, laughing as she disappears. This leaves Kirby to do his dance, and proceed to the next level.

Susie 2.0[edit]

Like most other bosses in the game, Susie has a 2.0 variant, which is fought inMeta Knightmare Returns andThe True Arena. Susie herself does not change her look at all; her Business Suit, on the other hand, now has more elaborately decorated yellow/pink patterns, and the Haltmann Works Co. logo is replaced with a heart. The back exhaust pipes are larger and more triangular, causing the suit to resemble a cat's face from the back.

InTeam Kirby Clash Deluxe, the "Susian Bolt Blade" and "Haltonium Helm" forSword Hero Kirby are based on Susie and her Business Suit. They are only available to players who haveKirby: Planet Robobot StreetPass data on theirNintendo 3DS system. Additionally, a boss fromAnother Dimension that resembles Susie is fought in this game, calledParallel Susie.

Kirby's Blowout Blast[edit]

InKirby's Blowout Blast, a statue of Susie in her Business Suit appears in the main level hub in this game for players who have StreetPass data ofKirby: Planet Robobot and have completed the first level ofBlowout Blast.

Kirby Battle Royale[edit]

Susie appears as a spectator in theRocket Rumble minigame inKirby Battle Royale. She can be found in the top left of the viewing deck.

Kirby Star Allies[edit]

Susie makes her playable debut as aDream Friend in version 4.0.0 ofKirby Star Allies. Her moveset is divided between two primary forms. The first has her on-foot, where she can fire at foes using her H.W.C. Blaster or charge at them with rushdown attacks similar to those of theJet ability. To fly long distances, she pulls out her personal Transporter, which can damage foes with its rotor blades. Her second form has her jump into her Business Suit, which functions very similarly to the Robobot Armor, having only one midair jump and being capable of clearing away heavier obstacles such as chains,stakes and metal blocks. Susie also takes significantly less damage while in her Business Suit, as did Kirby in theRobobot Armor.

Her Dream Friend description states that she intends to bring back the company her father built. Part of the Japanese, Chinese and Korean descriptions are written from her perspective, and rather than saying that she "uses science to [...] mechan[ize] new planets and peoples", it gives her a slightly different goal: 「科学の力で 家族だんらん、幸せな くらしを ごていきょう… そんな理念の もと、ヤバンなヤツは くじょ、いたしますわ！」 ("We provide harmony in families and happiness in life through the power of science... based upon this ideal, I'll exterminate you savages!"). The Chinese and Korean translations also share a similar sentiment.^[2][3]

Susie is capable of receivingPower Effects, adding to her arsenal and creating several distinct attacks which resemble the Robobot Armor modes.

• Vividria andArtist Kirby have a rare chance to create a statue of a "goddess" with Susie's head on top from the Sculpture attack.

• Starting with version 4.0.0, another statue of Susie with a stand microphone is a possible Stone transformation.

Kirby's Return to Dream Land Deluxe[edit]

InKirby's Return to Dream Land Deluxe, Susie's likeness appears in twoDress-Up Masks, one of which is a unique design with glasses and beret known as "Susie (Weekend Outfit)". Her original mask can be unlocked by completing card #11 in theStamp Rally, and completing 60missions unlocks the Weekend Outfit mask and a gold statue based on her inMerry Magoland.

Kirby Air Riders[edit]

InKirby Air Riders, Susie appears as one of the playable riders. She may be unlocked by performing 5 perfect landings during anAir Ride race, or hitting three enemies with a single attack duringRoad Trip. Whenever her machine takes flight, she uses her Transporter to gain additional height. Like other Riders, she is able to wieldCopy Abilities. HerSpecial is called Roboboosters. While it is active, two thrusters appear at Susie's sides and rocket her forward. Her alternate color scheme is based on Parallel Susie. In the Road TripChecklist image, Susie rides theSwerve Star.

Super Smash Bros. Ultimate[edit]

Susie appears as aSupport Spirit inSuper Smash Bros. Ultimate. She is ranked ★★ Advanced, costs 1 slot and has the skill of equipping the fighter with aBeam Sword. Her Spirit Battle inAdventure Mode andSpirit Board featuresIsabelle possessed by her andMeta Knight inmetal form, which referencesIsabelle being also a secretary in theAnimal Crossing series andMeta Knight modified intoMecha Knight inKirby: Planet Robobot. Susie is also one of the Spirits who can unlock the gate of the Base on the Light Realm map, possibly thanks to her technical skills.

Etymology[edit]

Susie's name is derived from the Japanese word for number,「数字すうじ」(Sūji). This is meant as a reference to the Haltmann Works Company's use of technology as weaponry. DirectorShinya Kumazaki wanted to choose a real woman's name as well. He found that the nickname Susie is frequently used outside of Japan, which coincided with the Haltmann Works Company being foreign toPlanet Popstar. Other potential names included Beatrice and Melissa.^[4]

The Executive Assistant for the Haltmann Works Company has to juggle a lot of responsibilities. Susie’s in charge of scheduling meetings, screening calls, and of course, leading the plan to completely mechanize Planet Popstar.

Trivia[edit]

• It is heavily implied in-game, and was later explicitly confirmed byShinya Kumazaki, that Susie isPresident Haltmann's daughter.^[5] She was separated from him many years ago after an accident with theMother Computer caused her to go missing, as described in Susie 2.0's Special Page; Kumazaki later clarified that she was accidentally sent to another dimension, where she gained access to various worlds and obtained data later used for theHolo Defense API.^[6] The president attempted to use Star Dream to bring her back, but it also stole his memories of her in the process, so by the time she returned to him, he no longer had any memories of her.^[7]
  • Her middle name references this fact. In Japanese and Korean, it's 「ファミリア」/「파밀리아」 ("Familiar"); in English and most foreign versions, it's "Patrya" (derived from the Latin word "patria", feminine form of "patrius", meaning "fatherly"); and in Spanish, it's "Dinasty" (derived from the English word "dynasty", meaning a series of rulers in a family).
• After the release ofKirby: Planet Robobot, Susie was often used as a sort of presenter character whenHAL Laboratory made statements regarding theKirby series on social media. This was most evident on theKirby JP Twitter. Later, her Twitter presenter role was passed toThe Three Mage-Sisters fromKirby Star Allies (which she is implied tohold a grudge over), and then more concretely to theWaddle Dee Report Crew.
• Susie 2.0's pause screen description refers to her as "Sue" in the American English version ofKirby: Planet Robobot, though Susie is not referred to as such anywhere else in the game. Most other language versions of the game, including the British English version, do not call her "Sue" in this context.
• Susie's voice features abitcrush effect in-game; it is noticeably lower-quality than the voices of most other characters. This trait is shared byPresident Haltmann and theSectonia Clone. Interestingly, theDress-Up Mask based on Susie inKirby's Return to Dream Land Deluxe does not feature a bitcrush effect for its voice.
