Kirby (as a fighter)[edit]

Kirby inSuper Smash Bros. Ultimate.
SmashWiki has more information about this subjecthere.

Kirby returns as a series veteran. Being part of the 'Perfect Attendance Crew', Kirby is among the starting eight fighters who do not need to be unlocked first. In addition, Kirby is also the first character available in the Adventure Mode - World of Light, as he was the only one to survive Galeem's initial attack.

Kirby retains his essential attributes fromfor 3DS/Wii U as a lightweight and versatile fighter with 6 jumps and the ability to copy the moves of his opponents, although some of his moves and physics were changed. Despite this, he is the only fighter from his series who did not have his Final Smash changed, once again using theUltra Sword.

Moveset[edit]

Most of Kirby's attacks were retained from his appearance infor 3DS/Wii U with few tweaks, most of which were to his attributes and frame data. The following lists off each of Kirby's moves:

Standard Ground[edit]

  • Neutral - Kirby jabs his opponent rapidly, similar toVulcan Jab. Once released, he finishes with a Smash Punch that has decent knockback.
  • Forward tilt - Kirby does a spinning kick forward - with decent range. This can be angled up or down.
  • Up tilt - Kirby kicks upward behind him, covering his head in an arc.
  • Down tilt - Known officially as 'Squish Kick', Kirby kicks forward while crouching, sweeping the floor. May trip opponents.
  • Dash attack - Returning fromMelee, Kirby combusts in flame and flies forward, similar to theBurning ability, though he does not travel past ledges.
  • Forward smash - Kirby does a strong kick as he steps forward which can be angled. Based onSpin Kick.
  • Up smash - Kirby performs a bicycle kick, doing a back-flip in the process.
  • Down smash - Kirby spins with his feet out, hitting on both sides.

Standard Aerial[edit]

  • Neutral aerial - Kirby performs the 'Twinkle Star' move, spinning with arms and feet extended outward.
  • Forward aerial - Kirby kicks forward three times in succession, with the last hit dealing the most knockback.
  • Back aerial - Kirby kicks out with both feet behind, dealing a quick hit with very high knockback.
  • Up aerial - Kirby flip-kicks upward in midair, mirroring his up-smash, though with much less power.
  • Down aerial - Kirby drills with both feet downward, which can be used to send foes down with a meteor smash. The start-up of the move is rather slow.

Throws[edit]

  • Forward - Kirby flips with his opponent in the air, then pile-drives them into the ground. Based on thePile Driver move.
  • Back - Kirby performs a backward suplex on his enemy. Based on theBackdrop ability.
  • Up - Kirby flies up off-screen with his foe, then crashes back down. This move is based on theAir Drop technique.
  • Down - Kirby throws his opponent to the ground and pummels them with his feet, similar to theQuick Stamping technique.

Special[edit]

Kirby using Final Cutter
  • Inhale - Kirby inhales, which will allow him to swallow up fighters who are close-by (within range of a grab). From there, Kirby can either spit them back out as a temporaryStar Bullet, or 'swallow' them to copy their neutral special move (and gain a hat based on the fighter swallowed). Kirby can discard this move by taunting or will lose it if he is hit by a strong attack (at random). Kirby can also inhale and spit back projectiles thrown at him, or swallow them to heal himself.
  • Hammer Flip - Kirby pulls out his hammer and swings it. Kirby can also hold the hammer and charge it instead. He can move and jump while charging, but the hammer will hurt him if held for too long. Swinging it will cause good damage and knockback. The hammer is not as strong in the air, but will swing around twice in return.
  • Final Cutter - Based on the last hit of the Cutter combo, Kirby takes out a blade, rises into the air, then crashes back down, releasing a shock wave on landing. Kirby can use this move to gain some height when recovering and can grab the ledge with it, but it can be easy to intercept. When falling downward, Kirby can send his opponent flying downward with the blade if timed right.
  • Stone - Kirby transforms into stone and crashes downward. He is invulnerable to all but the very strongest attacks and grabs while in this form and will damage opponents he collides with while falling. He gains a bit of super armor while initiating the move.

Final Smash[edit]

  • Ultra Sword - Kirby wields a gigantic sword and slashes it. Opponents who get struck will be trapped, as Kirby then slashes several times with the sword from varying directions, finishing off with one last big strike that will send the opponents flying.

Meta Knight (as a fighter)[edit]

Meta Knight inSuper Smash Bros. Ultimate.
SmashWiki has more information about this subjecthere.

Meta Knight returns in this title, as an unlockable fighter. Some of his color changes resembleGalacta Knight andDark Meta Knight. Like his previous incarnation, he is a highly mobile aerial fighter with 6 jumps and special moves which can all assist further in his recovery. He gains a new Final Smash in this title known asDarkness Illusion.

Unlock requirements[edit]

  • Complete Classic Mode with a character inLink's unlock tree, being the fourth character unlocked afterSimon.
  • After a VS. match, aMob Smash, aSpirit Board match, or after exiting World of Light, a new challenger will appear in a specific order, with a wait time of 10 minutes per fighter. Meta Knight is the 38th fighter to be unlocked afterDiddy Kong.
  • To unlock Meta Knight for World of Light, the player must defeat his puppet fighter in the Mysterious Dimension, found in the Dark Realm.

Moveset[edit]

Most of Meta Knight's attacks were retained from his appearance infor 3DS/Wii U, with few tweaks. A great deal of them were made up for theSmash series, though some bear reference to his moves in theKirby series, particularly fromMeta Knightmare Ultra. Meta Knight's attacks are as follows:

Standard Ground[edit]

  • Neutral - Meta Knight begins rapidly slashing about with his sword, finishing with a small uppercut.
  • Forward tilt - Meta Knight can perform up to three distinct slashes in front of him.
  • Up tilt - Meta Knight stabs straight upward, in a similar vein to theMaster ability.
  • Down tilt - Meta Knight stabs forward close to the ground. Has deceptive range and can trip opponents.
  • Dash attack - Meta Knight kicks forward, coming to a stop afterward.
  • Forward smash - Meta Knight pulls back, then releases an extremely quick swipe with his sword. Slow to start-up, but releases instantly after charging.
  • Up smash - Meta Knight swipes three times upward with his sword in rapid succession. The last hit will launch.
  • Down smash - Meta Knight slashes in front, then behind himself in quick succession.

Standard Aerial[edit]

  • Neutral aerial - Meta Knight spins in a circle with his sword out, similarly toSword Kirby's spinning maneuver.
  • Forward aerial - Meta Knight slashes three times with his sword in front of him.
  • Back aerial - Meta Knight slashes three times behind himself, with the last hit being more powerful.
  • Up aerial - Meta Knight makes one very quick slash above his head. He can do this many times without landing.
  • Down aerial - Meta Knight slashes below himself quickly.

Throws[edit]

  • Forward - Meta Knight kicks his opponent forward.
  • Back - Meta Knight warps behind his opponent, then slashes them away.
  • Up - Meta Knight flies up with his opponent off-screen, then crashes back down, similarly to Kirby's up-throw.
  • Down - Meta Knight tosses his opponent to the ground, then stomps them repeatedly, similarly to Kirby's down throw.

Specials[edit]

Meta Knight flying off the skies using Shuttle Loop
  • Mach Tornado - Meta Knight spins around, creating a vortex that will launch foes if it connects. The move travels a great distance horizontally and can be mashed to greatly increase the vertical distance it covers, similar to Dr. Cyclone, though Meta Knight cannot act again afterward until he lands. This move is similar to theTornado ability.
  • Drill Rush - Meta Knight winds up, then spins forward in the air like a drill. He can be steered while doing this.
  • Shuttle Loop - Meta Knight does an extremely quick loop in the air, being able to stab the opponent twice. Very similar to its namesake fromKirby's Return to Dream Land,Kirby: Planet Robobot andKirby Star Allies.
  • Dimensional Cape - Meta Knight disappears behind his cape for a moment, then reappears somewhere close by. He also has the option to quickly attack upon reappearing if the player holds down the Special Attack button.

All of Meta Knight's special moves leave him helpless after use.

Final Smash[edit]

  • Darkness Illusion - Meta Knight gains an extra pair of wings and poses in the air sending a shockwave around himself. Anyone caught in this field will be trapped, and Meta Knight will follow up by slashing them repeatedly with lightning-quick dives at the top of the stage before sending them flying with one last great hit.

King Dedede (as a fighter)[edit]

King Dedede inSuper Smash Bros. Ultimate.
SmashWiki has more information about this subjecthere.

King Dedede returns in this title, as an unlockable fighter. His moveset appears relatively unchanged, but he now has the ability to inhale hisGordos aftertossing them, then spit them back out again. LikeKirby inUltimate, Dedede caninhale and spit opponent's projectiles.

King Dedede's oldFinal Smash,Dedede Burst, has been replaced by a newFinal Smash calledDede-Rush, now involving tossing one opponent into a boxing ring, then attacking them asMasked Dedede.

Unlock requirements[edit]

  • Complete Classic Mode with a character inDK's unlock tree, being the fourth character unlocked afterRosalina.
  • After a VS. match, aMob Smash, aSpirit Board, or after exiting World of Light, a new challenger will appear in a specific order, with a wait time of 10 minutes. King Dedede is the 30th fighter to be unlocked afterRoy.
  • To unlock King Dedede for World of Light, the player must go to the Light Realm, complete a Gourmet Race minigame by collecting 11 foods and then defeat his puppet fighter.

Moveset[edit]

King Dedede's attacks were mostly retained from his appearance infor 3DS/Wii U, though some were changed. His attacks are mostly made up for theSmash series, though a few bear reference to his moves in theKirby series. King Dedede's attacks are as follows:

Standard Ground[edit]

  • Neutral - King Dedede swipes up to two times with his hammer, proceeds into a spinning hammer move which acts as a rapid jab, then finishes with an upswing.
  • Forward tilt - King Dedede thrusts his hammer forward and spins it. This move has a very good range.
  • Up tilt - King Dedede thrusts his head upward, covering a surprising amount of space. His upper body becomes intangible by attacks during this.
  • Down tilt - King Dedede quickly rolls over the ground.
  • Dash attack - King Dedede trips and falls on his face, in a move with a slow start-up but great knockback. This move is based on his Head Slide attack from theKirby series.
  • Forward smash - King Dedede lifts his hammer up slowly, then sends it crashing down in front of him, dealing huge knockback if it connects.
  • Up smash - King Dedede swipes his hammer over his head in an arc.
  • Down smash - King Dedede spins his hammer around himself on the floor, hitting one side, then the other.

Standard Aerial[edit]

King Dedede's neutral aerial
  • Neutral aerial - King Dedede puffs up and extends his limbs, hitting foes that make contact.
  • Forward aerial - King Dedede swings his hammer downwards in front of himself.
  • Back aerial - King Dedede swings his hammer horizontally behind himself.
  • Up aerial - King Dedede thrusts his hammer upward, spinning it like a drill.
  • Down aerial - King Dedede swings his hammer downwards beneath himself. Has a meteor effect if timed just right.

Throws[edit]

  • Forward - King Dedede smacks his opponent with the hammer, sending them forward.
  • Back - King Dedede tosses his opponent behind then smacks them with his hammer.
  • Up - King Dedede tosses his opponent into the air by jabbing them with his hands.
  • Down - King Dedede lifts his opponent and slams them into the ground.

Special[edit]

King Dedede inhaling a Bob-omb (not a good idea)
  • Inhale - King Dedede inhales, sucking in opponents who are fairly close to him. He cannot swallow like Kirby, but he can spit them out as aStar Bullet which deals more damage and goes further. He can also inhale and spit back projectiles.
  • Gordo Throw - King Dedede pulls out aGordo and shoots it at his opponent with his hammer. Tilting the stick determines how the Gordo travels. It can be knocked around by most attacks. It can also stick to walls.
  • Super Dedede Jump - Based on his jump attack from theKirby series, King Dedede rises high into the air, then comes crashing back down, causingDropped Stars to appear on each side of him when he lands. It can be used for recovery, but cannot grab ledges on the way down unless canceled. The move has super armor at the start-up point.
  • Jet Hammer - Based on his Jet Hammer asMasked Dedede, King Dedede's hammer sprouts an engine, and begins charging up. King Dedede can then release a powerful hammer swipe. It will start hurting him if he charges too long, though. However, if King Dedede is already above 100%, he won't get hurt by overcharging the move. He gains a bit of super armor at the beginning of the swing.

Final Smash[edit]

  • Dede-rush - King Dedede does a quick hammer swipe which can catch a single opponent (though it will do minor damage to anyone else close-by). That opponent is tossed into a caged boxing ring where they are barraged by missiles and then struck by a huge spinning attack byMasked Dedede using his jet hammer. This last blow breaks the cage and causes the opponent to get sent flying.

Items[edit]

SmashWiki has more information about this subjecthere.

Kirby Items[edit]

A number ofKirby series items appear in this title. These are as follows:

Items[edit]

  • Bomber (new): It walks around the stage and may fall off the ledge like what it does in theKirby series. When picked up, it will explode in 1.5 seconds. It deals more damage to fighters at the center of the explosion but won't damage the fighter who picked it up. It will explode willingly if left on its own or falls of a ledge
  • Dragoon Parts A, B, C.: If a fighter manages to gather all three pieces, the Dragoon is assembled, and the fighter is given one chance to aim it at the opponent. If successful, the shot deals massive damage and knockback.
  • Maxim Tomato : If a fighter eats it, it will heal 50% to the consumer.
  • Star Rod : Performing a side tilt or side smash attack causes a smallStar Bullet to be fired out of the Star Rod.
  • Superspicy Curry : If a fighter consumes this item they will be able to constantly breathe fire for a while.
  • Warp Star : When a fighter grabs a Warp Star, they will be hoisted up into the air (and off-screen), and after a while crashes down relative to the location the launch point's origin. The point of the crash site can be adjusted by tilting the stick, and holding the shield button or attack button causes the flight to stall or speed up, respectively.

He may also instead throw plates at opponents if his ladle misses.
  • Knuckle Joe : Attacks usingVulcan Jab, Smash Punch, andRising Break.

Game Modes[edit]

Smash[edit]

Spirits[edit]

SmashWiki has more information about this subjecthere.

Spirits is the new mode inSuper Smash Bros. Ultimate. In this mode, the player can collectspirits in the form of their official illustrations and use them in Spirit Battles.

Spirits can be equipped to a fighter, which function likestickers inBrawl. Spirits also replace the collectibletrophies in previous titles. Spirits can be obtained in various ways, including Classic Mode, Adventure Mode, Spirit Board, Summon, Challenge rewards, and Vault's Shop.

Types of spirits[edit]

SmashWiki has more information about this subjecthere.

There are four kinds of spirits:primary, support, fighter andmaster. Their strength and rarity are ranked from low to high:Novice (1 star),Advanced (2 stars),Ace (3 Stars) andLegend (4 Stars).

  • Primary spirits enhance the fighter's strength (with an extra boost if the fighter and the primary spirit are the same series). They are divided into four types:Attack,Grab,Shield andNeutral. Types have an advantage against one another (except Neutral): Attack>Grab>Shield>Attack. Primary spirits have 0-3 slots to equip support spirits and gain additional skills. Some primary spirits have their own skill as well. Primary spirits can gain experience and level up. Some of them can beenhanced into new forms when reaching Lv. 99 the maximum level. An enhanced form has increased strength and a new skill, but their level will be reset to 1 after enhancement.
  • Support spirits give additional skills to the primary spirit. They cost 1 or more slots.
  • Fighter spirits feature the main fighters. They cannot be used in any battle, so they serve as collections only. They can be obtained viaClassic Mode (game clear may reward the fighter's own fighter spirit) orVault's Shop. The artwork consists of their appearance inUltimate, as well as official artwork from another game.
  • Master spirits serve as NPCs who host facilities. They are obtained by defeating them in their respectiveAdventure Mode battles.

When the player starts a new save file ofSuper Smash Bros. Ultimate, a random Advanced primary spirit will be given.

Adventure Mode[edit]

SmashWiki has more information about this subjecthere.

The Adventure Mode of this title is calledWorld of Light, and can be played by only one player. In this mode, all characters in theSuper Smash Bros. universe, exceptKirby, have lost their bodies and been turned into spirits byGaleem, Lord of Light. The player starts the game with Kirby and saves the spirits and the world.

A feature exclusive to World of Light is theSkill Tree, which can give fighters additional skills by investing Skill Spheres. While most of the spirits in the game are fought in World of Light, there are a few which are absent in it and can only be obtained viaSpirit Board,Summon, etc.

Spirit Board[edit]

SmashWiki has more information about this subjecthere.

Spirit Board is a mode to obtain spirits outside of the Adventure Mode. It has a Target List with up to 10 random targets. Each target requires the player to defeat a fighter possessed by a spirit, with special rules like theEvent matches in previous titles.

After defeating the possessed fighter, the player has to play a minigame to shoot the possessed fighter with a special gun. The possessed fighter has a rotating shield. If the gun hits the fighter, the player can obtain the spirit; if it hits the shield, the spirit is not obtained. However, broken shields will remain in rematches so the player will have a better chance to win next time. In addition, there are items that can destroy part of the shield or slow down its rotation.

Each target has a timer of 5 minutes to accept (except Legend spirits with 15 minutes), and when the time is over, they will be replaced by new random targets. When a target is finished, there will be a timer for respawning as well. There are items that can reshuffle or fill the targets.

Games & More[edit]

  • Classic Mode: In this title, every fighter's Classic Mode has their unique subtitles, routes, rules, and opponents. In general, each route has 6 fighter battles, the bonus stage, and the final round. (For some routes, the boss is not fought in the final round and others do not have a boss.) TheIntensity level is still present with a few twists: It can start from 0.0 to 5.0 and will increase as the rounds go further (up to 9.9). Can be played by two players.
    • Kirby Route - Gourmet Clash: Kirby fights other gourmet fighters. In these six 1 VS 1 fighter battles, both sides start with 35% damage and many food items immediately spawn before the round starts. The boss fought at the end of the route isMarx.
    • Meta Knight Route - Two Sides of the Same Coin: Meta Knight fights both hero fighters and their villain doppelgängers in free-for-all battles, which refers to Meta Knight's role throughout theKirby series. The bosses fought at the end of the route areMaster Hand andCrazy Hand, regardless of difficulty.
    • King Dedede Route - Royal Rumble: King Dedede fights other royal fighters. The Japanese subtitle (おうってなぁに?) can translate to "What is a King?", an irony on Dedede being a self-proclaimed king. The boss fought at the end of the route is Master Hand. Crazy Hand might be fought alongside Master Hand if the difficulty increases high enough beforehand.

Something with some misfortune like a single character escaping total annihilation of his squadron and then fighting back while rounding up his allies.
