| “ | Fusing together with Haltmann, the most advanced computer in the galaxy has becomeself-aware. To realize its old master's wish ofeternal prosperity...it's decided toeradicate all life-forms in existence! | ” | — Vs. Star Dream,Kirby: Planet Robobot Pause Screen description (American version) |
Star Dream (sometimes called theMother Computer) is the overarching antagonist ofKirby: Planet Robobot, appearing as theboss ofMind in the Program, and serving as the final boss of the main Story Mode. It is a sentient computer built byPresident Haltmann using the blueprints and technology he found on numerous planets, possibly left there byancient civilizations, using it to fuel the operations of theHaltmann Works Company.
Physical appearance[edit]
The robotic Star Dream's initially presented form is that of a large white cylinder, capped by a structure resembling a screw's head at the top and a screw's point at the bottom. A lone yellow eye lies just under the top rim, which is modeled to be concave to give the illusion that it stares at the viewer. Overhanging the eye is a sort of cockpit emblazoned with theHaltmann Works Company logo. Floating around Star Dream are what become wings when in flight mode: black and gold curved structures from which blue "feathers" emerge in flight mode. Sprawling across many of Star Dream's surfaces are magenta patterns reminiscent of motherboard etchings. The most prominent of these is a broken heart on the front, symbolizing the machine's malignant nature.
In the midst of the battle with Kirby's team, Star Dream takes a new form. It merges with the Access Ark, with the upper wing segments forming a watch's turn key as the core docks in the top of the Access Ark. In this mode, Star Dream appears to be a relative ofGalactic Nova fromKirby Super Star, as its assembly with the Access Ark greatly resembles it, though not until the surface of the Access Ark is chipped away. When in that complete form, Star Dream presumably rivals Galactic Nova as the largest boss in theKirby series, though its actual presented size varies depending on the circumstances. When in its initial form, Star Dream ranges from being able to fit inside theAccess Ark comfortably, to being approximately the size of theHalberd during the first battle. When controlling the Access Ark, it is downsized greatly for the sake of gameplay - it is significantly smaller in the actual battle than it ought to be, considering that the ark is typically portrayed as equivalent in size to all ofPopstar.
Role inKirby: Planet Robobot[edit]
Story Mode[edit]

While mentioned a few times throughout the story, Star Dream is not properly introduced untilPresident Haltmann shows it toKirby at the end ofAccess Ark. It is said to be the source of the company's power, and was responsible for all of the mechanizing technology they had been using, including changingMeta Knight intoMecha Knight. Indeed, Haltmann uses the computer to build himself a mech to battle Kirby with.
After Haltmann is defeated, he attempts to use Star Dream again to exact revenge, and is in the process of activating it with a controller helmet, but his executive assistant,Susie, steals it off his head. As controlling the computer requires direct brain access, this causes Haltmann to black out, as Susie proclaims that she was waiting for an opportunity to steal Star Dream for herself. However, when Susie dons the helmet, the computer activates on its own, and zaps Susie away as well. The computer, using Haltmann's body to communicate, declares that all organic life is flawed, and that it would erase history in order to usher in a new age of 'infinite prosperity'. It then rises out of theAccess Ark and into space, away from anyone who could interfere.
With Susie's begrudging help, and Meta Knight'sHalberd, Kirby pursues Star Dream into space, where he fights the computer in the grand finale. Upon defeat, Star Dream, and everything it created, vaporizes, leavingPopstar in peace once again.
The following lists all of Star Dream's attacks inKirby: Planet Robobot. Each phase is represented with a separate bar ofhealth. Attack names are taken from Japanese guidebooks.
Phase 1[edit]

| Attacks - Phase 1 | |
|---|---|
| Attack | Description |
| メガビット・ショット Megabit Shot | Star Dream conjures lasers from black holes to fire upon the Halberd. This is done in several patterns.
|
| ギガバイト・ロケット Gigabyte Rocket | Star Dream fires two or four large missiles that home in on the Halberd. They can be shot down.
|
| テラバイト・ハート Terabyte Heart | Star Dream fires heart-shaped projectiles at the Halberd. These explode in large bursts if not shot down first.
|
| インベードアーマー Output | Star Dream summonsInvader Armors to go after the Halberd. These can be shot down.
|
| サーマル・モジュール Thermal Module | Star Dream wreathes itself in flame, then performs a rolling dive toward the Halberd, taking up a large portion of the screen.
|
| ハートフル・シェル Heartful Shell | Star Dream conjures a heart-shaped force field to defend itself. Pieces of it can be fired at to break the shield.
|
| グランドICキューブ Grand Code Cube | Star Dream conjures giantCode Cubes that attempt to ram the Halberd. They can be shot down.
|
| スタードリーマー Star Dreamer | Star Dream fires a massive laser from its core, which it sweeps across the arena. |
| アステロイド Asteroid | Star Dream conjures a huge field of asteroids which fly toward the Halberd. They can be shot down. |
Phase 2[edit]
Once Phase 1 concludes, Star Dream returns to Popstar and abducts the entire central dome of the mothership, adding to its mass and returning to the fight.

| Attacks - Phase 2 | |
|---|---|
| Attack | Description |
| メガバイト・ショット Megabyte Shot | Star Dream conjures beam rings from black holes to fire upon the Halberd. This is done in several patterns.
|
| アウト・プット Output | Star Dream summonsGigavolts to go after the Halberd. These can be shot down. |
| サーマル・モジュール Thermal Module | Star Dream wreathes itself in flame, then performs a rolling dive toward the Halberd, taking up a large portion of the screen. |
| グラウンド・シールド Ground Shield | When a piece of the mothership's shell breaks off, the debris can crash into the Halberd.
|
| ハルトマンワークスカンパニー Haltmann Works Company | Star Dream forms a shield in front of itself, which spits out a large letter-shaped field that approaches the Halberd. The letters shot are, in order, L, A and H, spelling "HAL" backwards. |
| ペタバイト・ロケット Petabyte Rocket | Star Dream fires several large missiles that home in on the Halberd. They can be shot down.
|
| バイナリー・ツリー Binary Tree | Star Dream conjures a series of lasers that split off from each-other, covering a good portion of the screen, then bursting at the ends.
|
| ワークスアークス Works Arcs | Star Dream forms four legs, and then does two waves of two swipes with them. |
Phase 3[edit]
Once Phase 2 concludes, the remaining front covering of the dome falls off to reveal a face on the dome, looking much like the one onGalactic Nova. The fight resumes inside a holographic space tunnel, with new and bizarre attacks. If Kirby is defeated in this phase, he will be sent back to phase 2.

| Attacks - Phase 3 | |
|---|---|
| Attack | Description |
| インストール・ホール Install Hole | Star Dream inhales, sucking the Halberd in. If caught, the Halberd takes massive damage in a colorful, quick cutscene, then Star Dream spits it out into the screen, cracking it. The Mother Computer always begins the phase with this attack.
|
| デッド・エンド・コード Dead End Code | Star Dream conjures a shield, which releases fields shaped like numbers. Each one is harder to dodge than the last.
Each progressive number in the countdown subtly alters the colors of the tunnel, starting at a mix of red and blue and changing over time to be only red by the timeFatal Error (below) occurs.
|
| メモリーズ Memories | Star Dream disappears, and a giant implement appears which fires projectiles and can be shot down. These items appear in the following order:
|
| Fatal Error | If the countdown gets toGO!!, a system error occurs, and six red rectangular forcefields with the words "Fatal Error" are sent towards the Halberd, dealing massive damage and then slamming it into the screen. It's still possible to dodge it, but it can easily destroy the Halberd if it does not dodge all of the fields or use anAssist Star to survive it. If the Halberd survives, then the countdown resets back to 5 and begins anew.
|
Phase 4[edit]
Once Phase 3 concludes, Star Dream falls for a moment, but then shoots a surprise laser to cripple the Halberd. Meta Knight releases Kirby from its face, to deal the final blow to Star Dream with theRobobot Armor by itself.

All that needs to be done during this phase is for the player to continue rotating the Circle Pad as quickly as possible. This will allow Kirby to drill through all the shields, then force Star Dream into and through the Access Ark's core, mercilessly gutting the machine world's core and appearing out of the bottom of the structure. Should the player fail to rotate the Circle Pad for an extended time (or not fast enough in the final attack), Kirby will be knocked back with slight damage and make another attempt. Only the final attack is direction-sensitive in terms of rotation.
On defeat, Star Dream explodes, fragmenting into countless pieces, which then all vaporize, along with everything else that was built by Haltmann Works. Popstar is saved, and the game is complete. As with Star Dream's design when merged with the Access Ark, the exact way the boss explodes is a reference toNova's death inKirby Super Star.
InThe Arena, Phase 4 is not fought, and defeating Phase 3 completes the boss rush.
Meta Knightmare Returns[edit]

InMeta Knightmare Returns the extra game, Star Dream appears during the fight withPresident Haltmann 2.0. After the president is defeated, the computer addressesMeta Knight directly, proclaiming him to be the new admin. It then proceeds to set up a challenge titled "Sword_Master.EXE" for its new admin, having him fight three distinct bosses in succession in order to prove his worth as a swordsman. The first two are clones of familiar bosses created by the computer,Dark Matter Clone andSectonia Clone.
After these two are destroyed, Star Dream then proceeds to summon one last foe for Meta Knight. Through a cosmic rift,Galacta Knight is brought in. Immediately after being summoned, he slashes Star Dream, presumably destroying it, and engages Meta Knight with new and improved powers. After defeat, Galacta Knight is re-sealed in his crystal prison, and sent back from whence he came, completing this game mode.
The True Arena[edit]
- Main article:Star Dream Soul OS
InThe True Arena ofPlanet Robobot, a what-if scenario, Kirby fights the same 2.0 bosses Meta Knight has faced. Galacta Knight slashes Star Dream again like in Meta Knightmare Returns. After Galacta Knight is defeated by Kirby, however, there is still one boss left, displayed as ???? in the rest area.
When Kirby enters the door to the final battle, it is revealed as none other than Star Dream. It still has Galacta Knight's slash mark on it, but now has its color palette rearranged to be primarily black, yellow, and red along with white accents. It is titledStar Dream Soul OS, serving as the soul boss of this game.
Trivia[edit]
- According to the "Planet Robobot Ask-A-Thon", Star Dream gradually steals the memories of its users, which it had done repeatedly toPresident Haltmann prior to the events of the game. Star Dream apparently does this because it had been left in an incomplete state.
- It's heavily implied that mostpause menu descriptions ofKirby: Planet Robobot are written from Star Dream's point of view. TheCopy Ability descriptions in particular are written in a completely different tone from descriptions of other games, which are very playful, and are written way more formally. They also often mention science and try to explain how the abilities work, or in the case of some bosses, mention how much money they or their weapons cost. Moreover, the song that plays in the pause menu is called "Mother's Intuition" in theKirby: Planet Robobot Original Soundtrack, further implying this, as Star Dream is also called the Mother Computer.
- Star Dream's third phase begins the battle with a "meow" cry, which was actually recorded fromShinya Kumazaki's pet cat, Tom (now deceased).[3]
- According to Kumazaki, he wanted Star Dream's cry to sound like a baby's cry, but more inhuman.[4]
- Nago's voice fromKirby Star Allies onward is also sampled from Tom.[5]
- Star Dream somewhat resemblesHAL 9000, a fictional sentient computer from2001: A Space Odyssey and the namesake ofHAL Laboratory.[6]
- The items that appear in the third phase's "Memories" attack are all items that can be found on Galactic Nova.
- Additionally, the weathercock released makes real chicken cackles, which were recorded fromHirokazu Ando's pet chicken, Nago.[7]
- Star Dream's circular wings and cylindrical top bring to mind a pocket watch's bow and crown, like those seen on Galactic Nova, which becomes more evident when it attaches itself to the Access Ark.
Music[edit]
Star Dream features a handful of motifs mostly tied directly to it, found in such themes as "First Contact" and "Fatal Error" (originally from "VS. Star Dream"), and has also been associated with the octave-roll motif found in tracks such as "Pink Ball Activate!" and "Vagrant Counting Song of Retrospection", as well as with the "Milky Way Wishes: Shooting" leitmotif. Star Dream's individual music tracks featured during its boss battle are the following:
"VS. Star Dream" is an energetic and dramatic theme that plays in the first phase of Star Dream's final battle, followed by "Intermezzo Without a Leader", which is more ominous and reserved. Star Dream's third phase music is called "Vagrant Counting Song of Retrospection", which is a tonal mix of the two previous themes. Finally, the fourth phase of Star Dream's normal battle uses "Pink Ball Revolution", a fast hard rock track. In addition,Star Dream Soul OS, the Soul form of Star Dream, features the same first three tracks as normal. However, the fourth phase of its battle instead uses an almost complete remix of "Milky Way Wishes: Shooting" titled "Soul 0 System", as well as "Vagrant Keepsake of Oblivion", which is a variant of the other Vagrant song with a different first loop point.
