Stadium

- This article is about the various game modes forCity Trial inKirby Air Ride. For Sub-Games involving a stadium, seeThe Arena orColosseum.
AStadium is a special match which happens at the end of a game ofCity Trial inKirby Air Ride andKirby Air Riders. In it, all competing riders test themachines they've acquired andpatched in a contest to determine which of them is best-equipped and most skilled. There are several types of stadium to play.
InKirby Air Ride, the Stadium is randomly determined. This forces players to guess at which event will be played, though predictions will sometimes be made to help things along. Specifically, the game selects which Stadium to play before the match starts, on the character select screen. In addition, the game keeps track of the previous four Stadiums selected and prevents them from being randomly selected again. This is intended to prevent the same Stadium from randomly appearing back-to-back, but a new Stadium is picked every time the character select screen appears (such as when backing out of the screen and opening it again, or entering then leaving the settings menu) or when "Free Run" or "Stadium" are selected, and the game's list of the last four Stadiums is updated according to this rather than what was actually played, so this behavior can be manipulated to make repeats appear.
InKirby Air Riders, four Stadiums are available to be chosen by players at the end of a match. If the game has eight participants or less, the players vote on which Stadium to play; if the game has more than eight participants, the players are split into groups, where they compete in the Stadium of their choice alongside others who picked it. If the player is the only one to choose one type of Stadium, they are declared "total champion" and win by default. If more than eight players pick one Stadium, they will be split into two groups. The original rules can also be chosen. A "Recommended" icon will appear on Stadiums that the player's machine is ideally suited for, while a confirmation will be required to select a Stadium if the game perceives the player's machine to be at a disadvantage in that Stadium. Occasionally, the Stadium may be pre-set and announced at the start of the game.
InKirby Air Ride, a more specific category of Stadiums can be chosen to always play if the player so wishes. InKirby Air Riders, a feature called Active Stadiums was implemented, which allows players to curate their own list of Stadiums and their variants.
Once a Stadium is played in City Trial, it can be accessed at any time separately in the Stadium portion of the menu, and played using standard-power machines.
Types of Stadium[edit]
There are a variety of different Stadium categories to choose from, with some having several different stages. They are as follows:
| Types of Stadium | |||
|---|---|---|---|
| Name | KAR | KARs | Description |
| Air Glider | a | a | Air Glider is a test of machine gliding capability, taking place on a runway, then over a long field. Contestants are tasked with getting as far as possible before hitting the ground. |
| Beam Gauntlet | b | a | Similarly to Drag Race, Beam Gauntlet is a straight course, but here players have to avoid lasers to reach the end. |
| Big Battle | b | a | Similar to Dustup Derby, where players compete in an arena for the most KOs, but Size Up and Size Down items will spawn frequently throughout the match. |
| Button Rush | b | a | In this Stadium mode, riders have to drive over buttons to gain points. Points are lost if an opponent manages to ride over opposing players' buttons. |
| Drag Race | a | a | Drag Race is a test of speed on a straight course with few obstacles. There are four variants to choose from. |
| Dustup Derby | a | a | Dustup Derby (originally Destruction Derby) is an arena game where the contestants are tasked with KO'ing each-other as many times as possible in a minute and 30 seconds. Whenever a rider is KO'd, they will be completely restored shortly after hitting the ground. There are five distinct stages to this stadium, each taking place in a different arena and with different items. |
| Gourmet Race | b | a | Just like thegame fromKirby Super Star this is based on, the riders have to eat the most food scattered around the area. |
| High Jump | a | a | High Jump is similar to Air Glider, but instead of going straight, the task is to fly as high as possible before starting to lose altitude. To that end, riders will pass through several floors on the way up. High Jump takes place in two rounds, and the higher of the two scores is the one kept. |
| Kirby Melee | a | a | Kirby Melee is a battle-oriented stadium, where the goal is to defeat as many common enemies as possible within a minute and 30 seconds. There are two variants to this stadium, taking place in different environments. Enemies continuously spawn into the arena during the match, and if Kirby is KO'd, he is out of the game. |
| Oval Circuit | b | a | A simple race around an oval-shaped course. |
| Rail Panic | b | a | A race where the player has to grind over rails. |
| Single Race | a | a | This Stadium consists of a single lap around one of theAir Ride courses. The goal is simply to win the race, though riders can be KO'd and forced to retire. |
| Skydive | b | a | In this Stadium, players dive down while trying to hit the targets to gain points. Bonus points are awarded for finishing the fall quickly. |
| Target Flight | a | a | Contestants are tasked with flying their machines into a large board with number panels on them. The panel they land on is their score. This game takes place in two rounds, and the combined score determines the winner. |
| VS. Boss | b | a | VS. Boss is similar to VS. King Dedede, but instead of King Dedede, contestants face off against one of four different bosses. |
| VS. King Dedede | a | b | Contestants are placed in an arena withKing Dedede, and are tasked to defeat him within a minute and a half. This entails using the items that drop to KO King Dedede. If all the contestants are KO'd, however, the game is over. This is technically the only Stadium to not return inKirby Air Riders, as it was reworked into the more general VS. Boss. |
| VS. Gigantes | b | a | If any rider gathers all three parts ofGigantes and manages to keep the machine until the timer expires, then this Stadium is automatically selected. This is a special Stadium where the rider riding Gigantes fights against all other riders; unlike normal Stadiums, it does not have the 8-player limit. The other riders have a shared life pool among them based on the number of participants, and their goal is to destroy Gigantes within two minutes without running out of lives, while the goal of the Gigantes rider is to reduce the life counter to 0 or survive until time runs out. |
Stadium predictions[edit]
| Notice: It has been suggested that this page or section be split intoPrediction. | |
|---|---|
| Please discuss this on the talk page. Reason: notable enough to split; can also cover information about Prediction Codex from Air Riders |
When playing games of City Trial, there is a chance that a special message called aStadium Prediction will appear for a moment, making a "prediction" of which stadium mode the riders are likely going to be sent to after the main City Trial game is over (or in the case ofKirby Air Riders, what one of the four possible voting candidates for the Stadium will be). Each unique Stadium event has its own prediction associated with it, but having that prediction appear on screen doesnot guarantee that particular stadium event will be played (in other words, it may be false).
InKirby Air Ride, predictions show the "correct" Stadium 80% of the time, and have a 20% chance to display a random prediction. There are 24 stadium events and the "correct" prediction can be randomly picked, resulting in false predictions appearing roughly 19.16% of the time (1/5 × 23/24 = 0.191667).
InKirby Air Riders, false predictions are distinguishable in a few ways: the text may briefly flash red when it appears, the text may appear upside-down, the text may flicker for a moment, there may be a split-second "Made you look!" message that appears as the prediction fades out, or there may be a corruption in the prediction's text (the English version featuresmalapropisms while the Japanese version features similar kana being replaced). Examples include but are not limited to:
- "Things might change insizzle..." instead of "Things might change insize..."
- "A long, chuckled course lies ahead..." instead of "A long, checkered course lies ahead..."
- 「強さ is パウーのようです…」instead of「強さ is パワーのようです…」 (Maybe strength is true power...).[1] In this case ワ (wa) is replaced with the similar kana ウ (u).
- 「とても たくあんの敵と戦うことになりそうです…」instead of「とても たくさんの敵と戦うことになりそうです…」 (Perhaps you'll be fighting numerous enemies...).[2] In this case さ (sa) is replaced with あ (a).

Stadium frequency[edit]
Kirby Air Ride[edit]
When a Stadium event occurs after time runs out in the city, each type of event has a chance to be the one chosen (assuming it has been unlocked and the player has not disabled that type in the game settings). However, Stadium events do not have an even chance of appearing, and instead have a weighted probability determined by the game's code (under normal circumstances). The following table contains the weight values for each Stadium event (a higher value means it has a greater chance of appearing):
| "Weight" values for Stadium events inKirby Air Ride[4] | ||
|---|---|---|
| Internal ID | Stadium | Weight |
| 00 | Drag Race 1 | 5 |
| 01 | Drag Race 2 | 5 |
| 02 | Drag Race 3 | 5 |
| 03 | Drag Race 4 | 5 |
| 04 | Air Glider | 10 |
| 05 | Target Flight | 20 |
| 06 | High Jump | 10 |
| 07 | Kirby Melee 1 | 10 |
| 08 | Kirby Melee 2 | 10 |
| 09 | Destruction Derby 1 | 4 |
| 0A | Destruction Derby 2 | 4 |
| 0B | Destruction Derby 3 | 4 |
| 0C | Destruction Derby 4 | 4 |
| 0D | Destruction Derby 5 | 4 |
| 0E | Single Race 1 (Fantasy Meadows) | 2 |
| 0F | Single Race 2 (Magma Flows) | 2 |
| 10 | Single Race 3 (Sky Sands) | 2 |
| 11 | Single Race 4 (Frozen Hillside) | 2 |
| 12 | Single Race 5 (Beanstalk Park) | 2 |
| 13 | Single Race 6 (Celestial Valley) | 2 |
| 14 | Single Race 7 (Machine Passage) | 2 |
| 15 | Single Race 8 (Checker Knights) | 2 |
| 16 | Single Race 9 (Nebula Belt) | 2 |
| 17 | Vs. King Dedede | 5 |
Notably, when grouping similar events together, their total weight usually adds up to 20. The only exceptions to this are the Single Race modes (which only add up to 18), Air Glider, which has a weight of 10, and Vs. King Dedede, which only has a weight of 5.
