Squeaky Hammer Machine[1] is a large robotic hammer designed to crush things on the floor of the factory inFactory Tour, fromKirby 64: The Crystal Shards. It would later appear as a stage hazard on theFactory TourBattle Stage in all three of theKirby Fighters games.

Characteristics[edit]

Squeaky Hammer Machine resembles a metallic round robot with two blue lights resembling eyes and a mouth full of sharp teeth. Sprouting from the top of its head is a gianttoy hammer, which it regularly swings forward to pound the ground ahead of itself. In its original appearance inKirby 64: The Crystal Shards, the machine itself had a dull bronze appearance and a red hammer. In its appearances in theKirby Fighters games, it was updated to have a gold lustrous coating on both the body and hammer, and it also opens its mouth, and emits steam when it strikes. Its "eyes" also glow red before it attacks. Naturally,Kirby will take damage if he is hit by the hammer, and is specifically flattened in theKirby Fighters games. The Squeaky Hammer Machine itself cannot be attacked or otherwise defeated, and instead must simply be avoided.

Game appearances[edit]

Kirby 64: The Crystal Shards[edit]

Squeaky Hammer Machines first appeared inKirby 64: The Crystal Shards, where they can be seen pounding the floor in various areas of the Factory Tour stage inShiver Star. If Kirby is hit by the hammer in this game, he will bedefeated instantly. Unlike most other enemies, they do not have anEnemy Info Card.

Kirby Fighters series[edit]

In all threeKirby Fighters games, three Squeaky Hammer Machines appear in the background of the Factory Tour Battle Stage and pound the stage in various patterns at regular intervals. If a fighter is hit by one of these hammers, he will take 48 points of damage and be flattened momentarily. The hammers will not activate inKirby Fighters 2 if stage hazards are turned off.

Kirby Air Riders[edit]

A Squeaky Hammer Machine appears inKirby Air Riders as a route character inRoad Trip, being one of the three options available inNeon Promenade. If selected, it will appear at the end of the stage to smash theDimension Meteor blocking the way, allowing the rider to pass on toBoiler Boulevard.

Trivia[edit]

  • Squeaky Hammer Machines are referenced inKirby Star Allies via Level 5 ofGuest Star Adeleine & Ribbon Artful Adventurers, which changes to reflect the original Factory Tour stage. Their attack pattern is referenced by acrusher system that smashes the floor in rhythm.
  • King Dedede gains a hammer resembling the Squeaky Hammer Machines with his Gentleman's Hatheadgear inKirby Battle Royale (closer resembling the original design, but retaining the "×" marking from the Kirby Fighters design).
  • In Japanese material forKirby 64: The Crystal Shards, such as the T2 and Futabasha strategy guides, the hammers are generically referred to as "hammers" (ハンマー) or "giant hammers" (巨大ハンマー). They were only given their current name in a post on theKirby: Triple Deluxe Miiverse. In said post, the original hammers are referred to with a more generic name; "hammer machines" in English and "press hammers" (プレスハンマー) in Japanese.

  1. "We resurrected the hammer machines from the Factory Tour stage of Kirby 64: The Crystal Shards, and turned them into the Squeaky Hammer Machines in Kirby Fighters. I thought that the designer was just going to enhance the appearance of the ones from the Nintendo 64 version, so when I saw that they now opened their mouths and let out a belch of steam as they attacked, I was really surprised! I'd say they are even more "striking" than the ones in the N64 game."--Tadashi Kamitake, in aMiiverse post regardingKirby Fighters (archived link to post)
--Tadashi Kamitake, in aMiiverse post regardingKirby Fighters (archived mirror to post)
