Spiny[Japanese title] is a spiky shell-wearingenemy that has made only a few appearances in theKirby series, first appearing inKirby's Adventure and making its most recent appearance inKirby's Dream Course. It is a small black creature with stubby pink feet and glowing eyes which wears a pink shell on its head covered in spikes.Kirby can obtain theNeedleCopy Ability byinhaling and swallowing it.

Game appearances[edit]

Kirby's Adventure[edit]

In-game sprite fromKirby's Adventure.

Spinys debut inKirby's Adventure, where they are shown with pink shells and feet, white spikes and bright yellow eyes in their artwork, but usually use a pale orange palette in the game. They are first encountered behind the fourth door ofVegetable Valley, making periodic appearances throughout the rest of the game.

Spiny starts out by slowly walking left and right, but is able to curl up into a prickly ball, bouncing into the air as it does so and proceeding to roll back and forth on top of the platform it is on at a high speed. After a short time, Spiny reverts to its initial state and form of movement.

In the game's remake,Kirby: Nightmare in Dream Land, Spinys are among the three types of enemies to have been replaced with a different one, the others beingBounder andRolling Turtle. In Spiny's case, it has been replaced byNeedlous, which acts the same, but greatly differs in appearance, and is the main provider of the Needle ability in the series since.

Kirby's Dream Course[edit]

In-game sprite fromKirby's Dream Course.

InKirby's Dream Course, Spiny reappears as one of the enemy types that Kirby may need to destroy in order to complete a Hole. Here, it is portrayed with a red shell, yellow spikes and blue feet. Like most other enemies in the game, Spinys can neither move nor harm Kirby, simply acting as a ground-based, stationary target instead that turns into a star when touched by Kirby. Defeating them automatically grants Kirby the Needle ability.

Trivia[edit]

  • Spiny is often mistaken forTogezo, a very similar enemy who only appears inKirby's Dream Land 3. On WiKirby itself, Spiny and Togezo shared an article until 2024. The officially-licensed strategy guidePlaying With Power: Nintendo NES Classics (released in 2016) calls Spiny "Togezo" in its overview ofKirby's Adventure (pg. 287), which may have createdcitogenesis.
  • Spiny appears to be a reference to theenemy of the same name from theSuper Mario series. Said enemy is known as Togezo in Japanese, which may have been another cause of confusion between Spiny and Togezo from theKirby series.
