"Sparkling Stars",[1] also called "Goal Game",[1][2] is a recurring theme that first appeared inKirby's Dream Land. It serves as an ambience jingle before collecting the primary collectible of a game after defeating aboss, as well as during theGoal Game. It is often followed by the "Kirby Dance" tune due to this.
Much like the rest ofKirby's Dream Land's soundtrack, this theme was composed byJun Ishikawa.
Composition[edit]

"Sparkling Stars" is a short theme in C major. It is typically heard in high registers and almost never has a percussive bassline. It bases around four notes: a G, and then C (or A), D and E, forming a pentatonic, rapidly shifting from one note to another while gradually rising and falling in a wave-like fashion. Despite functioning as a jingle, the track usually loops indefinitely.
Game appearances[edit]
Kirby's Dream Land[edit]
In its debut appearance, this theme plays after defeating aboss, before collecting the correspondingSparkling Star. Additionally, it can be heard on the Continue? screen after getting aGame Over. It can also be found as music 04 in theSound Test.
Kirby's Adventure /Kirby: Nightmare in Dream Land[edit]
Besides reprising its role as an intermediate theme between the defeat of a boss and the collection of theStar Rod piece, this jingle plays during theGoal Game in both the originalKirby's Adventure and itsremake. The jingle can also be found as music 05 in the original game's Sound Test and as music 13 in the remake's Sound Test.
Kirby's Pinball Land[edit]
InKirby's Pinball Land, the piece serves as the hub area's theme. It uses percussion and modulates from F major to C major and back, thus taking significantly longer to loop than other versions.
Kirby's Dream Land 2[edit]
InKirby's Dream Land 2, this theme's role is analogous toKirby's Adventure, serving as the Goal Game theme and playing after a boss is defeated and Kirby finishes his dance. This version can also be found in the Sound Test as BGM 21.
A separate version of the theme can be heard in rooms with aRainbow Drop. This version can also be found in the Sound Test as BGM 18.
Kirby Super Star /Kirby Super Star Ultra[edit]
InKirby Super Star and itsremake, the theme reprises its main two roles afterSpring Breeze's bosses and duringDyna Blade's Goal Game, and can also be heard in Spring Breeze'sGame Over screen and when reachingDyna Blade inRevenge of Meta Knight. This version is accessible in the original game'sSound Test as music 09 and as music 010 in the remake's Sound Test.
Additionally, it gains two new arrangements forMilky Way Wishes. These arrangements feature the original piece in the background as a new melody takes priority. Nonetheless, its roles are identical: one plays at theFountain of Dreams while the other F major one can be heard in its Game Over screen. In addition, the melody used for this arrangement goes on to become the first melody of "Milky Way Wishes: Staff Credits". Both of these arrangements are accessible as music 51 and 56 in the original game's Sound Test and as music 060 and 067 in the remake's Sound Test.

Kirby's Dream Land 3[edit]
Kirby's Dream Land 3's version of "Sparkling Stars" differs slightly, accenting a C rather than a G, bringing the melodic line to a third. It plays during the Goal Game, after defeating or when revisiting a boss and as BGM 5 in the Sound Test.
Kirby 64: The Crystal Shards[edit]
A somewhat different track plays during theBonus Game and after defeating a boss inKirby 64: The Crystal Shards. However, its structure and role are identical to "Sparkling Stars"' main two roles. Rather than a major pentatonic, the first 5 notes of an F major scale play up and down. The track can also be accessed as Music 023 in the Sound Check menu.
Kirby Tilt 'n' Tumble[edit]
An arrangement of the theme re-appears inKirby Tilt 'n' Tumble as the ambient soundscape after defeating a boss. Unlike in most other games, it is considered to be a sound effect instead of proper background music. It can be listened to in the game'sSound Room as sound effect 9.
Kirby & The Amazing Mirror[edit]
InKirby & The Amazing Mirror, theKirby: Nightmare in Dream Land version of "Sparkling Stars" plays after a boss is defeated and while a Mirror Shard is being returned to theDimension Mirror, thus reprising its original role fromKirby's Dream Land. It also plays when entering Goal Games, prior to grabbing theWarp Star, and can be listened to on theSound Player as music 36 after collecting theDream Notes.
Kirby: Canvas Curse[edit]
InKirby: Canvas Curse, a new and distinct version of this theme plays during theJump Game, named after the situation in which it plays. This version continuously rises rather than going back and forth. It can also be listened to as music 26 in the game's Sound Test.
Additionally, when the "Old School" sound mode is selected, theKirby: Nightmare in Dream Land arrangement plays instead. "Classic Song 1-11" can also be listened to in the Sound Test as music 55 after purchasing "Song 1" in theMedal Swap.
Kirby: Squeak Squad[edit]
A fresh G major arrangement of "Sparkling Stars" can be heard inKirby: Squeak Squad's Goal Game and before collecting a boss'chest. It can also be listened to in the Sound Room as music 11 after collecting the Happy Notes.
Kirby Mass Attack[edit]
InKirby Mass Attack, an arrangement of the theme (titled "Goal in Sight") plays before boarding theWarp Star that appears after defeating a boss. Much like inKirby: Squeak Squad, this version plays in G major.
Kirby's Return to Dream Land /Kirby's Return to Dream Land Deluxe[edit]
InKirby's Return to Dream Land and itsremake, the theme, now officially referred to as "Goal Game", reprises its role fromKirby's Adventure and its remake, as it plays during the identical Goal Game and between defeating a boss and collecting a Part Sphere (andFruit Fragment inMagolor Epilogue: The Interdimensional Traveler). Additionally, the theme plays prior to fightingGrand Doomer, leading to a minor twist when Kirby attempts to collect the Mast of theLor Starcutter. The jingle is composed byJun Ishikawa,[3] and can be listened to as music 17 in the original Wii version'sSound Test and as track 18 in the remake's Jukebox.
A new and eerie arrangement of the theme titled "Dimensional Silence" can be heard inAnother Dimension's platforming stages after beating theSphere Doomermid-boss. In the originalKirby's Return to Dream Land, this signifies the return of color. The main distinction between this song and the original "Goal Game" is that, rather than a C major pentatonic chord, the chord is an implied C major seventh sharp fifth (C7+5); the notes are high E, C, G#, and low E. The notes also play in reverse to the original song, starting at the highest note and descending to the lowest note, and there is heavy reverb that makes the ominous chord much more apparent. This version is also composed byJun Ishikawa,[3] and is available in the Sound Test as music 70 and in the Jukebox as track 120.
Kirby: Triple Deluxe[edit]
InKirby: Triple Deluxe, the "Goal Game" version heard inKirby's Return to Dream Land returns for the Goal Game and as track 035 in theJukebox/Kirby: Triple Deluxe. "Dimensional Silence" plays inRoyal Road - Stage 5 when theMiracle Fruit appears, after fightingRoyal Road's Revenge bosses instage 2 andstage 4, before entering theDimension Mirror in level 6 ofDededetour and as track 091 in the Jukebox.
Additionally, a version more similar to the original fromKirby's Dream Land plays before collecting theGrand Sun Stone after a boss fight and as track 017 in the Jukebox. This iteration is also heard in "Last-Minute Hero", which plays during the cutscene preceding theHypernova section of the boss battle againstQueen Sectonia, creating a sense of false victory not unlike that for Grand Doomer, and can be found in the Jukebox as track 103.
Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS / Wii U[edit]
InSuper Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS / Wii U, a brief arrangement of "Sparkling Stars" is included in the "Ice Cream Island" music track. It is played in an NES-style chiptune tone that resembles theKirby's Adventure version of the theme, as the track is a medley consisting of the themes from the game.
Kirby: Planet Robobot[edit]
InKirby: Planet Robobot, the "Goal Game" version fromKirby's Return to Dream Land returns for the Goal Game once more. "Dimensional Silence" can also be heard inPatched Plains - Stage 2,Access Ark - Stage 5 andAccess Ark - Stage 8 EX prior to gearing up with theRobobot Armor. Both versions can be listened to in theJukebox as tracks 038 and 133, respectively.
Kirby's Blowout Blast[edit]
The original jingle fromKirby's Dream Land returns when the Sparkling Stars appear afterKing Dedede's first boss phase. However, it quickly deforms shortly before the stars enlarge Dedede. Unlike other games where this jingle is treated as background music, this game treats the jingle as a sound effect instead.
Kirby Star Allies[edit]
Both versions of the theme fromKirby's Return to Dream Land return inKirby Star Allies: "Goal Game" for the Goal Game and "Dimensional Silence" (now titled"For Heroes, a Spear of the Heart / Dimensional Silence (Kirby's Return to Dream Land)") before picking up aspear of the heart after defeating a parallel boss. The former is accessible in theJukebox as track 027 and the latter is accessible as track 190 after clearingHeroes in Another Dimension for the first time.
Super Smash Bros. Ultimate[edit]
InSuper Smash Bros. Ultimate, during the "Green Greens" section of "Staff Credits - Kirby's Dream Land", "Sparkling Stars" can be heard in the background.
Kirby and the Forgotten Land /Kirby and the Forgotten Land – Nintendo Switch 2 Edition + Star-Crossed World[edit]
Despite the absence of a Goal Game,Kirby and the Forgotten Land and itsNintendo Switch 2 Edition utilize the theme in an arrangement (titled "Stage Cleared!") after defeating a boss. This arrangement is built around a C major pentatonic and uses marching percussion. It can also be played back at theWaddle Live! Corner Stage as track 16.
