ASparkling Star,[1] also known as aTwinkle Star,[2] is a magical item that is collected at the end of each level inKirby's Dream Land. There are five of them in total — one held by eachBoss — and they hold the power to distribute food among the people of Dream Land.
Game appearances[edit]
Kirby's Dream Land[edit]

In Kirby's debut title,King Dedede and his goons come down toDream Land fromMt. Dedede and steal the Sparkling Stars from the sky — robbing its denizens of their power source[3] — as well as all of their food. Without them, the Dream Landers are unable to collect more food,[4] and begin to starve, prompting Kirby to go and get them back.
At the end of each level, Kirby battles a Boss, who drops one of the stars upon defeat. After besting King Dedede, Kirby is able to collect the last one, and he uses them to turn himself into a giant hot air balloon, and carry Dedede's castle — along with the food inside — back to Dream Land. From there, it can be presumed that the stars were returned to their rightful position.
Kirby's Block Ball[edit]

Once again, King Dedede stole the five Sparkling Stars and hid them in his castle. After defeating King Dedede, Kirby collects the Sparkling Stars and uses them to break the castle down to uncover the fountain that it had been built over.
Kirby Super Star /Kirby Super Star Ultra[edit]

Kirby collects four of the Sparkling Stars inSpring Breeze, which serve the same function that they did inKirby's Dream Land. The Sparkling Stars' role is notably deemphasized in Spring Breeze, to the extent that the game no longer directly mentions their presence.
The stars that Kirby collects inMilky Way Wishes are reminiscent of the Sparkling Stars, though it is not clear if they are the same objects or not.
InRevenge of the King, Kirby collects three Sparkling Stars from the bosses in the first three stages. When he faces off againstKabula in Mt. Dedede Sky, she shoots down hisWarp Star. At this point, the three stars Kirby collected coalesce into theStarship, which Kirby can then use to battle the menacing blimp. After this, the Sparkling Stars are not seen in again in this mode.
Kirby Tilt 'n' Tumble[edit]
Much like inKirby's Dream Land, the goal in this adventure is to retrieve the Sparkling Stars, which King Dedede has once again stolen. This time, there are eight to collect, one from each area.
Kirby's Blowout Blast[edit]
A Sparkling Star makes an appearance afterKing Dedede is defeated. It flies down toward where he landed, and causes him to grow giant, then start attacking Kirby again. The star's effect wears off when Dedede is defeated again. To distinguish it from aWarp Star, the Sparkling Star in this game is rainbow-colored rather than pure yellow, though yellow and pink are its most predominant colors, similar to theHypernova color scheme.
Trivia[edit]
- Official Japanese sources such as theKirby's Dream Land instruction manual say that the Sparkling Stars were Dream Land's magic treasure.[5] Nowhere is it stated that the stars provided power for the Dream Landers.
- The Sparkling Star's use inKirby's Blowout Blast is similar to theGrand Stars fromSuper Mario Galaxy 2, as both cause the villains who use them to grow large in size.
