Spark
| ||||||||||||||||||||||
| ||||||||||||||||||||||
- This article is about the electricCopy Ability present in most Kirby games, and should not be confused withPlasma.
Spark is a commonCopy Ability in theKirby series that debuted inKirby's Adventure. This ability allows Kirby to attack with electricity; he can obtain it byinhaling foes such asSparky orDubior, or by inhaling certain electric attacks. When Kirby gains the Spark ability, he typically dons a gold tiara with a large circular blue gem at the crest, topped by frizzy blue electric waves.
Spark, in its basic form, allows Kirby to attack with a spark barrier that completely surrounds his body, similar toFreeze. Starting withKirby: Squeak Squad, Spark started to gain charging capabilities similar toPlasma (another electricity-based ability), an evolution which was fully realized inKirby's Return to Dream Land. That same game was also the first game to give Spark a full moveset, including some attacks unrelated to charging.
Characteristics[edit]
Spark's utility is normally defensive; its main attack, much like Freeze orNeedle, is to station Kirby in one place and shield him with a harmful electric barrier. Starting withKirby: Squeak Squad, however, Spark started to gain attributes similar to Plasma, allowing Kirby to build up an electric charge and release energy projectiles which can pass through walls and other solid objects.
Spark was given even more of Plasma's moveset inKirby's Return to Dream Land, in addition to new attacks. This essentially combined the two abilities into one, akin toBurning andFire, orIce and Freeze. Unlike those abilities, however, Plasma and Spark have never appeared in the same game; furthermore, Plasma returned with a few of its own distinct moves inKirby Star Allies, rather than being fully supplanted by Spark. Nonetheless, Plasma has appeared far less, making Spark the primary electric ability in the series.
Appearance[edit]
Spark was given a hat similar to Plasma's inKirby: Nightmare in Dream Land /Kirby: Right Back at Ya!: a golden tiara with a blue round gem on its front, with a triangular shaped blue energy in the vein of electricity coming out of it. The tiara also features a couple stripes near the gem. This has been the standard hat design ever since, although occasionally the gem is instead colored green, and the energy is more teal. However, sprite-based games that feature Spark with a hat (Kirby: Nightmare in Dream Land,Kirby & The Amazing Mirror, andKirby: Squeak Squad) do not use that hat design in-game, and instead just used a recolor ofFire's hat, making the tiara different in shape, and the energy more fiery; the energy is also colored green instead of blue/teal. Reflecting that, artwork of the ability forKirby: Squeak Squad illustrates the hat with the tiara shape like Fire's, although the energy is triangular instead of fiery. Moreover, in its only appearance in theKirby novel series,Kirby Meets the Squeak Squad!, Spark's hat's tiara has a shape that more closely resembles Plasma's.
Kirby: Right Back at Ya! is the only media in which Spark changes Kirby's body color, namely to green, although promotional artwork forKirby: Nightmare in Dream Land also features Kirby's body as green. This is referenced in a promotional card inKirby no Copy-toru!.

Kirby's Adventure /Kirby: Nightmare in Dream Land[edit]

The Spark ability first appeared inKirby's Adventure, whereKirby can shoot sparks of electricity out of his body in a defensive move similar toNeedle. It is provided by Sparky. Spark deals 8 damage inKirby's Adventure[1] and 7 inKirby: Nightmare in Dream Land.[2]
InKirby: Nightmare in Dream Land, Kirby gains a hat that resembles that ofPlasma.
Kirby's Dream Course[edit]
Spark returns inKirby's Dream Course, where it can be obtained fromSparky, orTransformer (in the 2-player mode only). With it, Kirby surrounds himself with electricity until he stops moving, which can be used to defeatWhispy Woods andKracko, and it is the only way to defeat them. Unlike the other abilities, Spark does not provide any movement changes.
Kirby's Dream Land 2[edit]
Spark reappears inKirby's Dream Land 2. Kirby acquires this ability fromMaster Green andSparky. By itself, this ability performs similar to the one inKirby's Adventure.
When on anAnimal Friend, however, Kirby can perform variations of the ability, as detailed in the following table:
| Animal Friend | Appearance | Description |
|---|---|---|
| Coo | Kirby shoots out a single lightning bolt below him. | |
| Kine | A light bulb appears from Kine's mouth, which can harm foes and illuminate dark areas, revealing hidden doors, similar to theLight ability. Letting go of the B button launches it forward, exploding when it collides with something or the button is pressed again. | |
| Rick | Enables Rick to use a whip of electricity, like theBeam ability seen in other games. |
ThroughoutKirby's Dream Land 2, there are specific blocks which can be broken only with the Spark ability. They resemble dark circuit boards.
Kirby's Block Ball[edit]
| “ | The ball sparks for a period of time, running through the blocks it strikes. | ” | — Kirby's Block Ball North American instruction booklet |
InKirby's Block Ball, Spark is one of the four abilities that Kirby can utilize, obtaining it by colliding with Sparky. When using this ability, Kirby flares up with electricity, causing him to break most blocks he passes through while the electric field is active. Unlike the other abilities, Spark does not affect Kirby's trajectory.
Kirby's Dream Land 3[edit]

Spark makes another appearance inKirby's Dream Land 3; being provided by Sparky,Bobin, and the yellow staff-wieldingBukiset. It functions similarly to its previous appearance inKirby's Dream Land 2. New Animal Friends, though, create more Spark-related abilities with Kirby orGooey, as follows:
| Animal Friend | Appearance | Description |
|---|---|---|
| ChuChu | ChuChu shoots a laser from her tentacle which flies straight forward and can defeat enemies, similar to theLaser ability. Unlike said ability, however, the laser will rebound off of flat walls if charged. | |
| Coo | Kirby shoots out a single lightning bolt below him. | |
| Kine | A light bulb appears in Kine's mouth while the Y button is held, which can harm foes and briefly illuminate dark areas, revealing hidden doors and symbols. The bulb breaks after a few seconds, keeping it from giving light; letting go of the button and then activating the ability again fixes it. | |
| Nago | Nago rubs Kirby as long as the Y button is held, creating static electricity around him. Every enemy he touches while charged up is destroyed, but neutralizes some electricity. The longer Kirby is rubbed, the more foes he can defeat before returning to normal, up to a maximum of eight. | |
| Pitch | Kirby uses a remote control to make Pitch fly through the air freely, moving through walls and taking out adversaries. Pitch is controlled with the directional pad and returns to Kirby when the Y button is pressed. While controlling Pitch, Kirby cannot move. If he takes damage, Pitch returns to him automatically. | |
| Rick | Enables Rick to use a whip of electricity, like the Beam ability seen in other games. |
ThroughoutKirby's Dream Land 3, there are specific blocks which can be broken only with the Spark ability. They are marked with the Spark icon.
Kirby 64: The Crystal Shards[edit]

Spark is one of the base abilities that appears inKirby 64: The Crystal Shards. There are a fair number of enemies that provide it this time around, including Sparky,Plugg, andZoos. On its own, the ability functions like normal, with Kirby generating a small spark barrier around himself. When combined with another ability or itself to makePower Combos, Spark creates a wide variety of different moves with varying functions, froma refrigerator that produces food toan electric quarterstaff.
Kirby & The Amazing Mirror[edit]
InKirby & The Amazing Mirror, Spark appears as an ability, unchanged from its appearance inKirby: Nightmare in Dream Land. It is once again provided by Sparky.
Kirby: Canvas Curse[edit]
InKirby: Canvas Curse, Spark's main function was changed. Instead of only covering an area around him, a smaller area is covered, while firing a pillar of lightning above Kirby. If Kirby keeps using Spark while in midair, he will hover in place.
Kirby: Squeak Squad[edit]
Spark reappears inKirby: Squeak Squad, bearing the same look asKirby & The Amazing Mirror. However, there is a new mechanic, lifted fromPlasma: Kirby can store energy by mashing the + Control Pad. Performing a Spark Attack with a barrier built up will cause the attack to become bigger. In addition, after collecting the SparkAbility Scroll, Kirby can charge up more energy to create a bigger barrier that acts as a passive attack; this can be released through an even bigger Spark Attack, or a Spark Bullet if left or right are held while he attacks. In this game, Spark's attacks have an electric property and, much like other electric attacks, can create shockwaves on the surface of water and activate the thunderclouds inCushy Cloud - Stage 5. After collecting the appropriate Ability Scrolls, it can be combined withSword orBomb in theCopy Palette to create Thunder Sword or Thunder Bomb.
Kirby's Return to Dream Land /Kirby's Return to Dream Land Deluxe[edit]

The ability reappears inKirby's Return to Dream Land and its remake,Kirby's Return to Dream Land Deluxe, where, in addition to generating the familiar barrier of electricity, it enables Kirby to fire lightning upwards or downwards. Following fromKirby: Squeak Squad, even more elements of Plasma are merged into Spark in this game, with increasingly stronger barriers and attacks generated by rotating the directional pad or shaking the controller. New providers of Spark includeElec and themid-bossDubior, as well as some ofMetal General's attacks.

Kirby's Dream Collection Special Edition[edit]
Spark appears in theNew Challenge StagesSub-Game, looking and behaving exactly as it did inKirby's Return to Dream Land. There isa challenge stage in Happiness Hall dedicated to the ability, and it can be used in all of the Magolor Races exceptMagolor Race 2.
Kirby Triple Deluxe[edit]

Spark returns inKirby: Triple Deluxe, functioning almost identically to the way it did inKirby's Return to Dream Land, though this time lacking the Thunderbolt and Lightning Strike moves. It can be obtained from Sparky, as well asQueen Sectonia'sGreen Antlers and Floral Spark Bullet.

Kirby: Planet Robobot[edit]
The Spark ability appears inKirby: Planet Robobot, where its electrical properties come in handy when poweringwires and circuits. In this game, there are many attacks and defenses which Kirby can use when he takes this form, as he regains the moves he lost inKirby: Triple Deluxe, with the addition of keeping Charge Power when using3D Warp Stars or tubes. It is alsocompatible with theRobobot Armor, giving the mechanical suit an extremely powerful plasma cannon.

The Spark Copy Ability makes four distinct appearances in the anime seriesKirby: Right Back at Ya!. Though it first appears in theKirby of the Stars Pilot, its first appearance in the proper series is inDedede's Raw Deal. Using this ability,Kirby is able to generate powerful fields of static electricity, and can also fire balls of lightning at his opponents.
Spark Kirby's hat resembles the one he was given inKirby: Nightmare in Dream Land. Its transformation sequence also references the similarPlasma ability, as he starts with a head of teal fire resembling the Plasma hat before gaining the proper Spark hat. He also turns green when in possession of the ability.

In theKirby novel series[edit]

In theKirby novel series, the Spark ability appears inKirby Meets the Squeak Squad!, whereKirby obtains it fromSparky. With thisCopy Ability, Kirby can generate an electrical barrier around him that can numb anyone that gets hit by it. The design of the hat differs from the design seen in the games, as the crown more closely resemblesPlasma's.
InKirby Meets the Squeak Squad!, theSqueaks sneak intoCastle Dedede in the middle of the night, and steal the egg that Kirby is tasked with protecting. Kirby chases after them outside, andDaroach commandsSpinni andDoc to fight Kirby while he escapes with the egg. Sparky comes in to complain about all the noise, and the group notices that they are right in front of his house. Kirby is delighted to see Sparky, and inhales him to get the Spark ability. Kirby then uses this to shock Spinni and Doc, instantly defeating them. Spinni is knocked out, and Doc's machine malfunctions and flies away. With those two out of the way, Kirby chases after Daroach. When Kirby catches up, he quickly shocks Daroach and takes back the egg. When Kirby makes his way back to the castle, he drops his Spark ability to free Sparky, who is angry at Kirby, and returns to his house.

Trivia[edit]
- Although the Thunderbolt and Lightning Strike moves were removed from the ability's moveset inKirby: Triple Deluxe, data for both of them still exists within the game, with both moves being fully usable through hacking. These moves would later return inKirby: Planet Robobot, functioning mostly as expected.
- On top of that, both games also contain data for Light-Speed Dash, a move that wouldn't be introduced untilKirby Star Allies, there being part of thePlasma ability's moveset.[3][4]
- The Spark-Nago combination fromKirby's Dream Land 3 is one of very few instances where an elemental Copy Ability can be used underwater, since the static electricity generated does not vanish once hitting the water.
