Scope Shot (theme)

"Scope Shot"[1] is a music track that first appeared inKirby's Return to Dream Land, playing on the title screen of theeponymous sub-game. Though the track and the sub-game themselves haven't made many reappearances, they were given a spiritual successor in the form of"Booming Blasters" and its themes. "Scope Shot" was composed byJun Ishikawa.[1]
Composition[edit]
"Scope Shot" is a song that is very evocative of its composer's (Jun Ishikawa's) signature style, making use of conga drum-heavy percussion and a repetitive bassline, complete with a classic bell synth providing background accompaniment. What stands out about this song is its main melody, which is constantly making a 4-chord ascension - the chords go up the scale continuously but always end up back at the "bottom" after the fourth one. This continues on until the melody takes on a bit of a flourish at the end of each ascension, as the excitement reaches a boiling point, and the song loops.
Game appearances[edit]
Kirby's Return to Dream Land[edit]
InKirby's Return to Dream Land, "Scope Shot", as mentioned before, plays on the title screen and menus for the sub-game of the same name. It's listed as track 88 in the game'sSound Test.
Kirby's Return to Dream Land Deluxe[edit]
"Scope Shot" returns inKirby's Return to Dream Land Deluxe, but not under the same circumstances, given the sub-game's removal from the remake. Instead, it plays in the hiddenHAL Room inEgg Engines - Stage 5, replacing the use of "Green Greens" from the original game. Appropriately, it was given the name"Secret Area: HAL Room (Scope Shot)" in the game's Jukebox, and became track 113.
However, even with the original sub-game gone, "Scope Shot" got a lot more mileage thanks to its core melody being quoted in two of the new tracks forBooming Blasters (and their Secret Song variants). "Booming Blasters - Title" plays on the difficulty select screen of said sub-game, and "Booming Blasters" - which has a segment that quite faithfully recreates the original "Scope Shot" track - plays during normal gameplay on difficulty Levels 1 and 2. Additionally, there's a short segment of "The Merry, Magical World of Magolor!" that quotes "Booming Blasters" and by proxy, also quotes "Scope Shot".
"Booming Blasters - Title", "Booming Blasters", and "Booming Blasters - Title (Secret Song)" were all composed by Hirokazu Ando[1]. "Booming Blasters (Secret Song)" and "The Merry, Magical World of Magolor!" were composed by Yuki Shimooka[1]. These are all listed in the game's Jukebox as tracks 89, 90, 157, 158, and 200, respectively.
